1.1 "Law & Order: Los Angeles" - "Hollywood" Quiz

The original "Law & Order" began airing in 1990 and aired its twentieth season in 2010, after its record-breaking 20 years on the air. Even though the program returned in 2022, creator Dick Wolf decided to work on another spin-off (previous spin-offs include "Special Victims Unit" and "Criminal Intent") to replace the original series. A little bit more than a year later, in September 2010, "Law & Order: Los Angeles" premiered on NBC with this episode. It was an interesting experiment because it was an attempt to blend the classic components of "Law & Order" with the modern life of the Californian city.

The show opens with "Kill Me" by Make the Girl Dance playing while two women are seen driving through various streets of L.A. When they arrive, they are received by tens of paparazzi who photograph them multiple times. Paparazzi are known as photographers who cover celebrities and try to get pictures of them in several situations, many times invading their privacy.

Rapper Kanye West and actor Tobey Maguire both have had public issues with paparazzi: Kanye has gotten into several arguments with them, including one time in 2013 when he yelled at photographers who were outside his house at 4:00 am and wouldn't leave. Maguire has also experienced a few run-ins with these photographers, including an infamous incident in 2008 where he yelled at them for obstructing his visibility while he was trying to leave a parking lot (can you blame him?)

Answer: Brad Pitt

Chelsea Sennett and her mom Trudy arrive at a nightclub, where owner Nick Manto (who Chelsea calls "Nicky Bear") orders the staff to give her a good table. He then greets Colin Blakely, whom he calls "the next Brad Pitt" as the young man is surrounded by two women. In the following scene, Colin and Chelsea start kissing. While all this happens, we also see Colin's girlfriend Miranda in her bedroom at home. She becomes startled as she hears muffled screams and noises. She thinks it's Colin at first, but then she realizes there are strangers in her house. Soon after that, she is attacked by a man dressed in black.

Danielle Panabaker plays the role of Chelsea Sennett, Travis Van Winkle plays Colin Blakely, and Leah Pipes played Miranda Clark.

Brad Pitt is a prolific American actor who has starred in more than 40 films, in addition to roles in television, and his work as a producer in many other projects. Some of Pitt's best-known films include the thriller "Seven", "Ocean's Eleven" and its sequels, "Troy", and "Inglourious Basterds" just to name a few. He was married to Jennifer Aniston between 2000 and 2005 and then to his "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-star Angelina Jolie between 2014 and 2019.

Answer: Tooth

Detectives Rex Winters and Tomas Jaruszalski are played by Skeet Ulrich and Corey Stoll. When Winters arrives at the crime scene, the first thing he sees is a large puddle of blood on the floor. Winters says "good morning" and Jaruszalski asks him to say sorry to Casey, Winters' wife, for waking up the baby. Winters appears not to be upset, explaining that his baby is "cutting his first tooth" and as a result no one in the house is sleeping. Cutting teeth is another way of referring to teething, which is when a child's first teeth start coming out of their gums. Babies are known to cry when this happens because it comes with varying levels of pain.

Answer: Rolex

The detectives believe Miranda's boyfriend, Colin, was actually the target because he fit the pattern of similar robberies that had happened recently. Detective Jaruszalski hypothesizes that the robbers could've thought no one was home and were surprised by Miranda. They then further inspect the crime scene, revealing that the robbers took $3,000 in cash. They also find eight empty Rolex boxes that were left outside a safe, a discovery that leads Detective Winters to say: "guy's got two arms and eight Rolexes? Genius." to which Jaruszalski replies: "actor".

Rolex is a Swiss watchmaking company that was founded in London, England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis. Rolex watches are famously known for being very expensive, which can be attributed to the craftsmanship and design that goes into the watches. Their watches are usually made with stainless steel and are assembled by hand, making the price of one of these watches quite high.

As the detectives continue their investigation, they interview Chelsea, who directs them to her friend Vicki. At the salon, Vicki tells Winters and Jaruszalski that she was a victim of burglary recently. She says that the robbers took a bracelet, three rings, and a "G.F.G.D." shirt with a retail value of $2,000. Vicki remembers that the burglary occurred on Chelsea's birthday, and she realized the shirt was missing while she packed for London. When asked why she didn't report it stolen, Vicki's response was: "well, I was going to London". Even though she claims the shirt was a gift from the designer, it is implied that she would have no problem buying another garment of the same value during her trip.

At the same time, the detectives suspect Vicki may have been ripped off, and set up a plan to identify people wearing that same shirt. Another girl they find claims that the shirt belonged to a three-year-old collection and she bought it from a woman on the street called Kai.

Answer: Burritos

At the LAPD station, the detectives read a TMZ article titled "Robbery Love Triangle", detailing Colin's affair with Chelsea. They later find out that Kai was at the same party, so they continue to look into the footage. Video from the night Vicki was robbed shows Vicki and Chelsea walking together, and Kai watching them. Winters, however, notices that Chelsea had been with the burglary victim each time the crime happened. Winters concludes that this looks more like a pattern than a random coincidence.

At the beginning of the scene, Jaruszalski gleefully walks into the room saying "'Tito's' burritos para todos", which is Spanish for "'Tito's' burritos for everyone". This is a popular Mexican food consisting of a bean, rice, and meat filling wrapped in a large tortilla. In the U.S., chains like Chipotle, Qdoba, and Taco Bell all sell this dish. "Tito's" is a fictional restaurant within the "Law & Order" universe, but this being California, it wouldn't be surprising if there was an actual burrito shop with the same name!

Answer: Mira Furlan

While the detectives investigate the potential link between Chelsea and the robberies, we get to see a scene with another burglary taking place. It appears to be a criminal group that includes Kai and Sam Loomis, who we briefly saw before showing the stolen Rolex watches to nightclub owner Nick Manto. The plan does not work out, however, since Chelsea's mother surprises Loomis trying to steal her jewelry and fatally shoots him, while Tanya and Kai run away undetected. Though the District Attorney's office wants a quick ending to the case because of the media attention it is receiving, the detectives ask for more time to fully explore Chelsea's potential involvement.

Winters and Jaruszalski find out that Sam Loomis was an aspiring actor who, according to Chelsea's former boyfriend, was taking some acting lessons. The police find a photo of Loomis taken by renowned photographer Maria Olsen, which is odd because they wouldn't expect an inexperienced actor to be able to afford such an expensive photographer.

The actress playing Maria Olsen is Croatian actress Mira Furlan, who was born in Zagreb when the city was still a part of Yugoslavia. Furlan's acting career started in her teenage years, and she appeared in multiple Bosnian and Croatian films before appearing in some American shows and movies. She became famous for her role as French scientist Danielle Rousseau on the TV series "Lost", and appeared in other shows like "Babylon 5", "NCIS", and "Just Add Magic". Furlan passed away in 2021 after fighting an illness caused by the West Nile virus.

The photographer directs the detectives to the luxury SLS Hotel, where they see security footage of Loomis having sex with Trudy Sennett in an elevator. After this scene, we see Deputy District Attorney Ricardo Morales (played by Alfred Molina) for the first time. He gives a press conference where he asks for patience as the investigation is completed. Morales then instructs the detectives to look for more evidence, and they end up arresting and interviewing Tanya and Kai. Tanya tells Detective Winters that Sam would come up with places to steal from and then sell the items to Nick Manto. Manto is then seen talking with DDA Morales, confronted with the stolen watches that were found on his desk.

Morales threatens with a harsher sentence if Manto doesn't reveal more. So Manto explains that Trudy Sennett was actually directing the burglaries and that she had conspired with Loomis to steal the jewelry she had loaned. He then says that while police have uncovered nine of the "jobs", the real count is actually much higher: 25. Loomis would steal the items while Trudy used her daughter Chelsea to keep the victims away from their homes. Essentially, Trudy was sending Chelsea (who had no part in the crimes) to party with victims so that they wouldn't be home and Loomis could steal from them.

The last 15 minutes of the episode are packed with even more stunning revelations: Trudy Sennett and Nick Manto got married in Las Vegas and would occasionally sleep together. Sennett's attorney tries to assert spousal privilege, but the judge agrees with DDA Morales that the privilege doesn't apply when it is used to hide a conspiracy, under the crime-fraud exception. Morales also refuses to have Chelsea testify because he believes her demeanor would hurt their chances with the jury.

During Sennett's attorney's questioning of Nick Manto, the nightclub owner reveals that he loaned $400,000 to Chelsea in order to replace funds that she stole from Chelsea. The prosecution figures out that Trudy received payments for the same amount from actor K.K. Curren. Curren confesses to the detectives that the money was not a "producing fee", but it was meant for Trudy to convince Chelsea of dating him. According to Curren, there was no other way of getting Chelsea to date him, let alone stay in a relationship for six months.

Morales makes sure to use this new revelation at trial, putting Trudy on the spot for manipulating her daughter. Morales shows how Trudy has taken advantage of Chelsea's career for her own benefit, with provisions in her contracts that include special organic meals and private transportation. The questioning gets intense when Morales asks whether Trudy has secretly profited from her influence with Chelsea, leading to the uncovering of Curren's secret payments.

Answer: The Bling Ring

At the end of the episode, Trudy reaches a plea deal with the prosecutors to prevent them from revealing the secret payments from K.K. Curren: she pleads guilty to second-degree murder. Chelsea is shocked and appears uncomfortable by the paparazzi taking photos of her outside the courtroom. Detective Winters offers to take her out from the building's back door, with the end of the episode suggesting that Chelsea was living the life Trudy wanted from her, and not what she wanted herself.

The Bling Ring was a group of teenagers that stole over $3 million dollars from celebrities in California between 2008 and 2009. They targeted the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. The group was composed of seven teenagers led by Rachel Lee who were arrested and charged in 2010. The actors in the episode have a striking resemblance to Lee (Kai), Alexis Neiers (Tanya), and Nicholas Prugo (Sam). A film by Sofia Coppola based on the group was released in 2013.
