Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Much of the storyline in season one, episode two, of "Dallas" centered around Jock and Ellie Ewing's granddaughter, Lucy. According to the opening credits who was the blond haired beauty who played Lucy?

Answer: Charlene Tilton

Charlene Tilton began to play the part of Lucy Ewing at the age of seventeen. Her long, platinum blond hair, sparkling blue eyes and curvaceous figure were, no doubt, as integral to the part of Lucy Ewing as was Tilton's talent as an actress. Charlene Tilton was married to country music singer Johnny Lee during the early 1980s; they had one daughter together.
2. Episode two showed Luvy's actions to cause friction between Bobby and Ray. It was the (main) topic of the breakfast conversation among the other family members. What was the one thing Lucy did that caused concern for most, if not all, of the Ewings?

Answer: Skipped school

Lucy was determined NOT to go to school. Jock had given Ray orders to "see that Lucy got to school". Little did Jock know, Ray was one of the main reasons Lucy never made it there. Each family member had an opinion of her truancy; few, if any, had a course of action to correct her behavior, though.
3. As Bobby's new wife, Pam had failed to win over much acceptance from her in-laws. She felt it was her first breakthrough when a spontaneous, yet compassionate, conversation about Lucy was instigated by which other family member/character during breakfast coffee?

Answer: Miss Ellie

Miss Ellie gave her own version of Lucy's back-story as she confided to Pam the inability among the entire family to mold Lucy into anything other than a spoiled brat. Sue Ellen went out of her way to ignore and/or belittle Pam. True, Pam and Ray talked (and, talked about Lucy), but their relationship was established BEFORE Pam had married Bobby.
4. Given the family's concern for Lucy's behavior, Pam saw an inroad to winning their acceptance with her own influence over Lucy. Pam's first opportunity to take action came when she answered a phone call to the Ewing ranch from Lucy's school. Who called?

Answer: Mr. Miller, high school counselor

Pam intercepted a call from Lucy's school that made it absolutely clear that Lucy had continued to skip school and Lucy, herself, was (most likely) the reason the older Ewings were not learning about it. Lucy had been destroying the letters sent by the school which told of their concern about her truancy.
5. At Ewing Oil, life for the other half of the newly-wedded couple was not much smoother. Bobby has begun his new role as an executive - much to JR's chagrin. Bobby might have been on to something about just how JR was running the family business. To whom did Bobby, initially, express his bewilderment about JR's success?

Answer: JR's secretary, Julie

According to Julie, as she reported what Bobby had said to her back to JR, "he's puttin' things together". We did not know what "things" but it was obviously something JR wanted to keep away from Bobby - and, the other Ewings, too. The relationship between JR and Julie identified itself with a lot of physical communication. Julie leaned close to JR to talk with him or sat on his desk very close him to show him something. And, JR seemed to never miss a chance to rest his hand on her knee/thigh or give her a seductive look. Hardly, the actions of a purely professional secretary or a faithfully married man!
6. With a close-up of the American flag and the flag of Texas, we were also shown the name of the school Lucy attended. What was it?

Answer: Braddock High School

This is one of the very first identifiers of the location of the Ewing ranch and/or home community - Braddock. It is a fictional community and/or county - there is NO actual Braddock in Texas, U.S.A.
7. Bobby was convinced that there was more to the success of Ewing Oil and its ability to have all the right allies in all the right places at just the right time, than JR's "power of persuasion". So, Bobby asked JR to let him in on his secrets. How did JR respond to Bobby's request for a favor?

Answer: JR totally side-stepped Bobby's request

We the viewing audience were given one of our first examples of the cunning, captivating and convincing JR. He totally ignored Bobby's request and launched into a monologue about how he (JR) had been so busy improving Ewing Oil for years. JR reminded Bobby while was "on the road, spreading the Bs" and hanging out with "fancy women" that he (JR) had been "busting my butt" in the office.

At the same time, JR was very clear (to Bobby) it was HE who was running Ewing Oil and "that's the way it's gonna stay". Stay tuned, that is!
8. Just as Pam thought she was making some progress with Lucy by convincing her to change her attitude and her behavior, Lucy had her own scheme to assure Pam's efforts were thwarted. Lucy agreed to study with Mr. Miller after school, but what did she accuse him of doing - the very first day?

Answer: Grabbing her and tearing her clothes

Lucy had cut her blouse the night before she was to study with Mr. Miller and set her plan in motion. She did not know that a boy she despised, named Roger, watched her entire performance as she pretended Mr. Miller had grabbed her so roughly that it tore her clothing.

In a dramatic moment, Lucy ran, screaming, from Mr. Miller's office. Roger had his own plan in mind - if Lucy wanted him to go along with her charade she would go along with Roger's plans, too.
9. Ray and Lucy mentioned a new place opening. Bobby told Pam that this opening would not "be official without Bobby Ewing and his charming new bride" being there. Lucy convinced Roger to take her there on their date. What type of establishment opened in "downtown Braddock"?

Answer: Disco

Yes, a new disco opened in downtown Braddock. Ray and his date Maureen were there. Lucy and Roger were there. Finally, Bobby and Pam arrived. A clash was to be inevitable. Bobby punched Ray. Pam deciphered and defused Roger's plans. Lucy seemed to realize Pam only wanted what best for her. All this as strategically placed camera angles showed everyone dancing to a carefully orchestrated DISCO version of the "Dallas" theme song.

It was an opening night to remember.
10. This episode was very much about Lucy. In the closing scene, as Bobby talked with Lucy he called her a particular nickname. What was it?

Answer: Shortcake

Bobby called Lucy "Shortcake" in an emotional moment to emphasize just how much HE cared for her and that Pam cared for her, too. Besides just too cute, it was a fitting nickname. Whether it was intentional or not, Lucy (well, Charlene Tilton) was a good bit shorter than the rest of the family members.

It may have been type casting to establish her youth. She was then the third generation of Ewings, after all.
