Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode began with a glimpse of Bobby Ewing enjoying a bit of what must be his personal exercise routine. What was he shown to be doing in the first few minutes of "Barbecue"?

Answer: Jogging

Yes, we the viewing audience saw Bobby running (jogging) across the fields, down the road and effortlessly hurdling over a fence while wearing the shortest of gym shorts. Guess the women of the show were not the only ones subjected to a bit of "beef cake".
2. We learned more about the back story of the Ewing-Barnes relationship. We heard Pam's dad, Digger, called by his given birth name. What was it?

Answer: Willard

Both Ellie and Jock referred to Digger as "Willard"; but Digger corrected Ellie with a curt remark of "nobody, but nobody, calls me Willard any more". Willard "Digger" Barnes was portrayed in this episode by the talented character actor, David Wayne. During his career Wayne was seen in a vast array of different productions - from Broadway dramas to TV comedies - but his classic training (he was initially was a part of a Shakespeare repertory company) was always evident.
3. We learned more of the back-story of the ranch, Southfork, in this episode. Digger told his family members the story of how he and Ellie knew each other. Digger and Ellie talked about the past as well. Several times, Miss Ellie's family (maiden) name was mentioned. What was it?

Answer: Southworth

Before he attended the barbecue, Digger told Pam, Cliff and their cousin, Jimmy, that his daddy worked for Ellie's daddy, "old man Southworth". As they walked alone (together), Ellie reminded Digger, "We Southworths have been here a long time". Jock mentioned that family name, too, as he told the caterer his own version of Ellie and Digger's past relationship.
4. Amid all the preparations for the barbecue to be later that same day, Pam found a quiet moment to call her doctor and inquire about her test. We heard the voice (on the phone) tell Pam "the test was positive. You are definitely pregnant." What was Bobby doing when Pam interrupted him to tell him she was home?

Answer: Taking a shower

Pam called her doctor from the bedroom. We, the viewing audience, heard what was obviously water running in the adjoining room. When we first saw Bobby he was wet and wearing only a towel. Pam told him the news of her pregnancy when it was just the two of them in their bedroom. Bobby was thrilled!
5. Sue Ellen learned of Pam and Bobby's impending new arrival before J.R. had learned of it. Sue Ellen wasted no time telling J.R. about it, though. She wanted to make it clear to him that it was not to be a particularly happy event for the two of them. How did she describe Pam when she told J.R., "little brother, Bobby, and that _________ are going to have a baby"?

Answer: Barnes girl

Sue Ellen practically spit the words at J.R. Sue Ellen was upset because she knew how much Ellie and Jock would welcome another grandchild - especially if that grandchild would be a boy. Sue Ellen wanted to hammer home the crux of the situation to J.R. Not only was she not pregnant, someone else was. That someone else was the daughter of nemesis of the Ewing clan - Digger Barnes.
6. After her tête-à-tête with J.R., a drunken Sue Ellen delivered quite the pathetic speech during which she included details of their marriage and its lack of intimacy. Who was her captive audience for this monologue?

Answer: Ladies who were guests at the barbecue

Sue Ellen seated herself at a table with five other ladies who were guests of the Ewing barbecue and proceeded to tell them various details of her marriage to J.R. and how she wished he would "love her more". She included her evaluation of what she believed is Jock's favoritism to Bobby over J.R.

The expressions of the faces of the guests - appropriately - ran from surprised to embarrassed to concerned to sympathetic to appalled. All the while Sue Ellen downed even more wine.
7. Bobby and Pam took Ellie, Jock and Digger away from their guests to tell them about the expected baby. All three grandparents were happy to hear the news. Of course, Jock said it called for a drink. What was one of the things Jock said the baby would have that upset Digger?

Answer: A Shetland pony

Shetland ponies are a smaller breed of pony. Due to their smaller size and usual good nature they have always been a popular breed choice for children. Digger told Jock that he is "on the wagon". Jock insisted that he (Jock) was having drink of his best whiskey. Jock scowled at Digger and told him that he "could drink soda pop". Jock immediately began to brag to Digger that HIS grandchild would have everything.

He was going to get that baby "a Shetland pony and one of those little buzzy cars that kids ride". Digger took great offense.

He accused Jock of taking HIS grandchild away from him by buying the child everything Digger could not buy. It was enough to knock Digger off that wagon!
8. A drunken Digger entertained a group of party-goers with a bit of a song and dance - whiskey bottle in hand. His rendition of "the soft shoe" dance drew quite the crowd. What song was he singing - or, attempting to sing - during his performance?

Answer: The Yellow Rose of Texas

"The Yellow Rose of Texas" is a very popular folk song; so much so that many people have (mistakenly) thought it to be the state song of Texas. The state song of Texas is "Texas, Our Texas". In this episode of "Dallas", Digger did a stumbling dance and a barely audible version of "Yellow Rose of Texas", hardly getting much sung beyond the chorus.

After onlookers formed a circle around him to watch his performance, Pam found him and pulled him toward a table until she could find Jimmy to take Digger home.
9. Pam's advice to her cousin, Jimmy, was "Lucy does not respond to cool". Jimmy proceeded to play the part of a "hayseed". His act must have worked with Lucy because he had not been at the barbecue very long when he mentioned that Lucy was "giving him a grand tour of ranch" that, of course, included the hay loft of the stables. Who found them there?

Answer: Pamela

Pamela went to find Jimmy so he could take the drunken Digger back into Dallas, i.e. home. Jimmy and Lucy left, but Pam stayed behind to be alone for a while. Unknown to her, Bobby found a drunken Sue Ellen riding a horse near the stables. J.R. followed Bobby there.

After J.R. made a few disparaging comments about Pam, Bobby punched him in the mouth and took Sue Ellen back to the house. That left J.R. to discover Pam in the hay loft and join her there.
10. A mumbling, bumbling, stumbling J.R. joined Pamela in the hay loft of the stables but she wanted no part of his advances. Backing away from J.R., Pam fell from the loft to a lower level. Later back at the ranch we learned from Bobby the result of that fall. What was it?

Answer: She lost the baby

Bobby reported to Miss Ellie and Jock that there were no broken bones but they had lost the baby. He and Pam would need to wait until she had healed a bit before it could be determined if her injuries from the fall and the miscarriage would render her sterile. Of course, Bobby blamed J.R. and Jock tried to assume the role of placater.

A tearful Pam told Bobby she would like to stay at the ranch. With an invitation to join her in their own living quarters, Sue Ellen gave J.R. the insinuation that this was their chance to get ahead of the race for the first Ewing grandson.
