Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After a lengthy recap of the previous episode of "Dallas" what/where was the opening scene of this episode? (This is AFTER the intro credits and theme music have finished.) Think about the most dramatic scene from the previous episode for an indication.

Answer: J.R. was at the "sanitarium" to visit Sue Ellen

More than three minutes of the beginning was recap. We saw Lucy as she took (recreational) pills; we saw Sue Ellen as she drank too much; we saw many of the Ewing family members confront J.R. about his ambivalence toward Sue Ellen and we saw Bobby and Pam (as always!) ready to "save the day". Every member of the Ewing agreed that Sue Ellen needed "treatment" for her excessive drinking but it was J.R.'s solution that was implemented: She was hospitalized in a treatment center that was miles away from Southfork and the Ewings. Sue Ellen blamed J.R. - for everything - he was not welcomed by her. Exactly the opposite.

She ordered him out of her room as she flung a glass of water - contents AND glass - at him.
2. The next visitor to Sue Ellen's room in the sanitarium was more than a bit more well received. Sue Ellen described her stay to that visitor as "like being on a vacation". Who was the lucky member of the family to see such a cheerful Sue Ellen? According to this episode who was her second visitor?

Answer: Miss Ellie

Sue Ellen really acted the part of a loving wife and daughter-in-law during her visit with Miss Ellie. Sue Ellen insisted - multiple times - she was NOT drinking. She insisted she was "tired", "exhausted", "too many charities", etc. Miss Ellie was not to be convinced. Sue Ellen could only maintain the charade a short time; all too soon she was demanding her "medication" before it was time for her next dose.
3. Lucy was shown as she left her high school campus. She was very pleased to have passed all of her classes which meant she would graduate. Two of her pill-popping friends were parked in the car beside her car as she approached it and, of course, they offered her pills. What did Lucy do?

Answer: She told them she would never take the pills again.

Apparently "things" were going better for Lucy's rehabilitation than for Sue Ellen's because Lucy was able to resist the temptation to go "celebrate" with her friend, Annie, and Annie's "pusher" boyfriend. Annie and her boyfriend made several snide comments to Lucy when she rebuffed their offers to sell her pills but she remained steady.

She smiled, she shrugged and then she drove away from them. Good for her!
4. In the previous episode, (part one of this two-part episode) we saw Miss Ellie have some strong words of warning for J.R. about his treatment of Sue Ellen. In this episode another family member took the opportunity to speak privately and sternly with J.R. about the same. Who told J.R. it was time for him to become a good father and good husband in this episode?

Answer: Jock

Jock emphasized to J.R. that is was HIS responsibility to make sure Sue Ellen was happy and content at Southfork AND as J.R.'s wife. Typical of J.R., he blamed anything else other than his own short-comings. A very typical line for J.R. came in this scene.

When asked (by Jock) why all of sudden Sue Ellen seemed so unhappy, J.R. replied: "Well, you know pregnant ladies. Their hormones get all jumbled-up, you know." Indeed!
5. During his next visit to Sue Ellen in the sanitarium J.R. showed Sue Ellen a newspaper that included an article and photo of Cliff Barnes (at a local gala) and his date. Obviously, Sue Ellen was very upset. J.R. knew he it would hurt her very much. Sue Ellen decided to "buy" some liquor from a worker at hospital. What did she select - from her personal belongings - to "trade" for the booze?

Answer: A long string of pearls she was wearing as a necklace

A less than charming (female) hospital worker had offered to get Sue Ellen "what she needed" and told her she had "her ways" to pay it. This same worker was "fingering" Sue Ellen's necklace as she made her offer. After J.R. made his visit Sue Ellen was so depressed she rang for the worker to come to her room and was shown removing the pearl necklace from her neck.
6. Bobby was the next family member shown in the episode to visit Sue Ellen at the sanitarium. Sue Ellen seemed very bright and cheerful - even hopeful - during the first few minutes of their visit. Who did Bobby mention that angered Sue Ellen to the point she threw the bouquet of flowers he had given her at him and run away from him?

Answer: Her baby

Sue Ellen had been smiling and asking about each of family members as she and Bobby strolled in garden of the sanitarium. She mentioned she wanted to be back at Southfork in time to help with Lucy's graduation party. But when Bobby mentioned to Sue Ellen, "I care about the baby, too" she became belligerent.

She screamed at him, threw the flowers at him and struggled as hospital workers tried to calm her. Bobby insisted that he could get her back to her room. Bobby did accompany Sue Ellen back to her room and he seemed to soothe her - somewhat.
7. The next scene, which was mostly a six-minute soliloquy from Sue Ellen, included a kiss given to a very uncomfortable Bobby from a very tearful Sue Ellen. What did Sue Ellen tell Bobby in this scene that she believed was the reason there was no treatment to help her?

Answer: Cliff Barnes was the father of her baby

Sue Ellen did tell Bobby that Cliff was the father of her baby. After Bobby comforted Sue Ellen for a little while longer he went directly to Cliff's apartment and punched Cliff in the face. Bobby accused Cliff of getting Sue Ellen pregnant just to humiliate J.R. Cliff told Bobby that J.R. knows the baby is mostly likely his (Cliff's) and not his own child. Still incensed and angry Bobby gives Cliff the warning that he was to never mention that he (Cliff) could be the father of Sue Ellen's baby.
8. Getting liquor while hospitalized did not seem to solve Sue Ellen's problems. She decided to escape. She hit the hospital worker in the head, stole a car from the driveway of the facility and drank from a bottle of "mouthwash" as she drove away. What happened to her in her "borrowed" car?

Answer: Sue Ellen drove through a stop sign and swerved to miss an oncoming car then crashed into a utility pole.

Sue Ellen did crash the car into a utility pole. She was shown to have been admitted to Dallas Memorial Hospital where plan were made to deliver her baby by emergency cesarean. The baby was not due to be born for another two months thus adding to the trauma. Her doctor explained the surgery was necessary for Sue Ellen and the baby.
9. During the course of Sue Ellen's pregnancy she had seen the same OB-GYN (doctor) and the same actress played that part - Dr. Anita Krane. She was the daughter of two other actors, both of them with long (television) careers. Who was the actress who played that part?

Answer: Ellen Geer

It was Ellen Geer who played the part of Sue Ellen's doctor. She was seen in several episodes during this second season. Ms. Geer was the daughter of Will Geer who was probably best known for his role on "The Waltons" (1971-1981) and Herta Ware who appeared in many, many TV shows including "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-1994) and "The Golden Girls" (1985-1992). One of the best roles for Ellen Geer, though, was when she played "the elderly Piper" on the TV show "Charmed" (1998-2006).

She really did look like Holly Marie Combs may look "in the future".
10. It was a very intense time for the Ewing family. Everyone waited at the hospital to learn if Sue Ellen and her baby would survive the surgery. What did J.R. do when he visited (an unconscious) Sue Ellen's hospital room - very uncharacteristic for J.R.?

Answer: He cried

After Sue Ellen's baby was born and moved to the neo-natal unit, Dr. Krane is very succinct with the Ewings. She said the baby "is stable" but with Sue Ellen she described it as "touch and go". J.R. was moved to tears when she saw Sue Ellen on the life support machinery in her room, knowing the doctor had concerns about her survival.

When Cliff heard the news of the auto accident on TV he rushed to the hospital. Pam was able to divert him away from the others' attention. But Cliff promised Pam "his son" would be raised a Barnes and not a Ewing. All the while, none of us knew if Sue Ellen and/or the baby would be alive for the next season.
