Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who arrived first at the crime scene of Zoe Kessler's body?

Answer: Nick

Nick was already there when Grissom drove up in the midst of the desert wind storm. Grissom met up with Jim first and then talked to Nick. A moment later coroner David Phillips walked into the scene, but none of the other three CSIs were there.
Annie Burgstede portrayed Zoe, whom we only see alive in video footage. She has also guest starred on "Charmed" and "Smallville".
2. The episode revolved around victims of medical experiments.

Answer: True

Zoe and Jack Landers were participants of a sleep study at Betz Pharmaceutical. They were both awakened during the sleep study by someone and both left early. Zoe's body was found with no hair, malnourished, missing a right hand, and with Jack's right eye in her eye socket.
Brass: "Emaciated, bald, and numbered. What does that remind you of?"
It reminded everyone of concentration camp victims. Zoe was numbered 19 and Jack was numbered 18 by method of a hot-iron brand. We later found out that Zoe had eaten off her own right hand.
3. The autopsy of Zoe revealed she'd been injected with large needles. Based on her body's condition, what did disease Grissom and Dr. Robbins feel she'd been injected with?

Answer: Flesh eating bacteria

Grissom stated it was flesh eating disease and Robbins confirmed she was full of necrotizing fasciitis. This disease usually gets into the body via a wound as strep A bacteria, but they knew hers had to have been injected because her skin was fine. Her organs were all eaten away by the bacteria. For more information about this disease, you can visit the NNFF website.
4. When the team found 'Captain' Jack Landers he was acting very strangely. What turned out to be the cause of his behavior?

Answer: he'd been lobotomized

Jack was walking around and saying weird things, but he also had a patch over his right eye. When the doctor examined him, he came to the conclusion a lobotomy had been performed through the eye opening, as had happened in days long past. Sneller had removed his blue eye and placed it into the Zoe's right socket, to replace her one brown eye. Both Zoe and Jack had a genetic condition called heterochromia, which means they had eyes of two different colors. Jack and Zoe both had one blue and one brown eye. Celebrities Kate Bosworth, Dan Aykroyd, and Christopher Walken also have this rare trait.
5. Who told Catherine that Zoe Kessler had been a student at Harvard?

Answer: Lady Heather

Lady Heather turned out to be Zoe's mother. She hadn't spoken to Zoe in around a year's time. When she saw the picture on the news, she came into Jim's office to identify her daughter. Heather went out of her way to make sure her daughter's torturer was caught.
6. Nick and Warrick found an interesting type of plant growing out in the desert. What was it called?

Answer: corpse flower

The flower, latin named Amorphophallus titanum, was growing in a small pot outside of a home in the desert. The home belonged to Betz employee Jacob Wolfowitz. This tied Zoe's death back to the clinic where he worked. In reality, the corpse flower only blooms every one to three years and is a challenge to maintain.

It does smell like decaying flesh, but does not reach maturity at such a small size. The record for this plant was an eight year old that achieved six feet in height. The flower was assumed to be used as a cover for actual human decomp on the site.
7. Jacob Wolfowitz was found dead inside his car in the parking garage.

Answer: True

He was found dead and frozen inside his car. Robbins explained it takes two solid days for a human body to freeze to its core. But, both Catherine and Heather had seen Jacob in the last 24 hour period. It turned out that Jacob was dead in his car, but the fingerprints inside it did not match his.

The DNA Lady Heather provided Grissom was a match for Jacob, but not the fingerprints. It turned out Jacob's identical twin brother had been impersonating him for about a year. He'd frozen his brother to use at a later date, and branded him with the number one.
8. What did the team find in the room under Jacob's house?

Answer: All of these

Johann Sneller, Jacob's twin brother, had left his Army post in Berlin and taken over Jacob's life. He'd come to hate his adoptive identity as a Jewish man, and began performing barbaric medical experiments in Nazi fashion. The team found quite a bit of Nazi paraphernalia in the room under the house, as well as identical twin males branded with numbers 20 and 21. Sadly, number 21 had died from the medical experiments. Apparently, Johann had decided to make them conjoined identical twins for his own sick testing.

Their backs were joined together along the length of their spines, but I could not determine how it had been done.
9. Was Jacob Wolfowitz the real culprit behind Zoe's murder?

Answer: No

Poor Jacob was another of Johann's victims. He inherited his parent's home in the desert and Johann had taken over all of Jacob's life. He took Jacob's life, his home, his job, and tried to let Jacob take the fall for the torture and murders. Thankfully, Johann did not realize his fingerprints were different from his brother's.
10. What did Grissom save Lady Heather from at the end of the episode?

Answer: torturing Johann Sneller

Hopefully this gave away the answer to question nine, as it was intended to do. Lady Heather took Johann from his desert hideout and Grissom discovered her black cross necklace at the scene. He followed the highway until he saw headlights along side the road.

He found Heather wipping Johann. Heather was full of pain and anger, and was most likely going to kill the man. Grissom would have never allowed Heather to have that on her conscience, and Grissom would have never allowed a crime to continue for any reason. Kevin Crowley played the twins Jacob and Johann.

He was also Al Prufrock on the short lived series "Push, Nevada".
