Kate helped her review some facts that she would be tested on, such as the difference between a crime and a tort. Castle asked her if she had a midterm so Alexis mentioned she was going to school at that moment to take it.

There was a police benevolence fundraiser that was going to happen shortly so the team discussed routines they would partake in at the fundraiser. Kate stated that she doubted anything could top a dance routine from last year's fundraiser that was reminiscent of dancing from "Dirty Dancing". Castle and Kate mentioned they would do a joint act for the fundraiser.

The team was at the crime scene where Lanie mentioned that blunt force to the head is what likely caused the victim's death. Kate noticed that the victim was a well known personal injury lawyer in the city: Richie Falco. He was known by the nickname "Pitbull" because he considered his demeanor as a lawyer to be reminiscent of an aggressive pitbull.

Javier, Kevin and the other team members wondered why someone would torture Richie.

Kevin got some footage of Richie being at Saint Simon's hospital shortly before he died and it showed a sports car coming up. A gentleman got out of it and started a fight with Richie. The team managed to get a driver's license off the car and it was registered to Derek Bolt, a former football player. Derek confirmed that he interacted with Richie just before his death but that he did not kill him.

The team pulled up Richie's phone records to see who he called the day that he died. It turned out that he only contacted one person: Elise Resner, who was his ex-wife. Elise spoke to the team about her relationship with Richie and how shocked she was that he called.

She claimed that their marriage ended on bitter terms after she could no longer handle his reckless behavior from years ago.

When the team got to Richie's apartment to see if they could find something that could help in their investigation, they were surprised to locate certain items. Among some of the things they located were glow sticks, duct tape, and chloroform. They wondered if Richie was planning to abduct someone.

Archie "The Savannah Hammer" Bronstein was another personal injury attorney in the area who was known to seek out clients who may be interested in pursuing a case after suffering an injury. Archie claimed that he and Richie often fought over getting clients who could garner them huge settlements. He said that he saw Richie at a diner the day he was murdered and the two fought.

Tory mentioned to Castle and Kate that she found the location on where Richie made his phone call the day of his death: an area in the woods that was about an hour away. Castle and Kate went up there but were held at gunpoint. The gunman bound their hands and made off with a corpse. Castle and Kate suspected that corpse was a person who Richie killed.

However, the corpse was revealed to be a dummy.

After doing some research, it was revealed that Richie was working on a case in which there were many cars recalled by Modesto Motors. Richie noticed that a lot of cars were recalled but that Modesto Motors may not have done enough to protect the public. Richie had filed a lawsuit against Modesto Motors and, interestingly enough, Richie once worked at a law firm which defended Modesto Motors.
