Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Bones"

Answer: Temperance Brennan

Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist for the Jeffersonian Institution. She works with FBI Special Seeley Booth to help bring criminals to justice on "Bones" (2005-2017). Brilliant but socially naive scientist Brennan is played by Emily Deschanel, while hunky, former sniper Booth is David Boreanaz who also played the role of Angel in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003).
2. "Law and Order"

Answer: Anita Van Buren

One of television's longest running shows, "Law and Order" ran from 1991 to 2010. While there were many cast changes in the twenty seasons, Lieutenant Anita Van Buren had one of longest tenures as the tough, no nonsense head of a New York City police precinct whose detectives helped catch the crooks that the attorneys prosecuted. Van Buren was excellently and believably portrayed by S. Epatha Merkerson.
3. "Criminal Minds"

Answer: Penelope Garcia

Beginning in 2005, "Criminal Minds" is set at the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, where profilers analyze serial killers in an attempt to catch these most heinous criminals. Here again, the cast has seen many changes; however, the BAU's computer genius, Penelope Garcia, has been there from the beginning, helping the profilers narrow their suspects and catch the evil murderers. Garcia is well-played in all her kookiness by Kirsten Vangsness.
4. "NCIS"

Answer: Abby Sciuto

"NCIS" (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) began airing in 2003. It has been one of television's most popular shows, with forensic expert Abby Sciuto one of TV's most popular characters. Washington, DC's Major Case Response Team is led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), but they would be hard-pressed to solve any of their cases without Abby's assistance. Abby is played by the indomitable Pauley Perrette.
5. "CSI"

Answer: Catherine Willows

"CSI" (Crime Scene Investigation) ran from 2000 to 2015, and was one of the very first criminal procedural shows. Starting with William Petersen as Gil Grissom, the show was set in Las Vegas, Nevada and explored how forensic evidence was used by the police to catch perpetrators. Grissom's right-hand man, er woman, was Catherine Willows, played by Marg Helgenberger.
6. "CSI: NY"

Answer: Stella Bonasera

With the success of "CSI", could a spinoff be far behind? From 2004 to 2010, the police procedural was spun off into "CSI: NY", where Mac Taylor (Gary Sinese) led a team of crack investigators to help solve crime in the Big Apple. He was assisted by an entire crew which included Stella Bonasera, played by Melina Kanakaredes who had previously starred as Dr. Sydney Hansen in "Providence" (1999-2002).
7. "Law and Order: SVU"

Answer: Alexandra Cabot

A spin-off of the "Law and Order" franchise, "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" first aired in 1999; it was an extension of the original Dick Wolf show but dealt specifically with sexually related crimes in the New York City area. Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler (Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni) were two of the main detectives, with ADA Alexandra Cabot prosecuting their cases. Attorney Cabot was played by Stephanie March from 2000 to 2012.
8. "NYPD Blue"

Answer: Sylvia Costas

"NYPD Blue" was a gritty, realistic, urban police drama which ran from 1993 to 2005. The show originally focused on two cops from the 15th squad, i.e., Sipowicz (with his short sleeved shirts) and Kelley (later replaced by Bobby Simone). Sharon Lawrence played Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas who later found love by marrying Andy Sipowicz. Lawrence played Costas from 1993 to 1999.
9. "The Mentalist"

Answer: Teresa Lisbon

"The Mentalist" (2008-2015) was about a "psychic" who admits to being a fake but joins the California Bureau of Investigation as a consultant with the agency so he can find out who murdered his wife and daughter. Simon Baker plays the brilliant and unconventional Patrick Jane who helps solve cases for the CBI's Senior Agent, Teresa Lisbon. Teresa Lisbon was played by Robin Tunney.
10. "Burn Notice"

Answer: Fiona Glenanne

"Burn Notice" (2007-2013) was not a typical police drama; the plot was about Michael Westen, a "burned" spy disavowed by the government and forced to use his special training to help others until he can be reinstated. Jeffrey Donovan plays Westen who gets help dealing with dangerous criminals from his friend Sam and his girlfriend, Fiona Glenanne. British actress Gabrielle Anwar is Fiona.
