Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the Irish foundling who became a police officer?

Answer: Brendan

The foundling was named Brendan. We get to see him grow up, become a young man, join the police force (Irish Guarda), miraculously survive a fall off a cliff, and retire. As the episode ended, his memories were mysteriously wiped. The significance of Brendan to the main story regarding humanity's last stand against the Cybermen was not explained during the episode.
2. How many humans were left in the settlement the Doctor and companions discovered in the distant future?

Answer: Seven

There were seven human survivors at the camp, all of them rather ordinary people with extra-ordinary survival skills. Their names were Feekat (Steve Toussaint), Fuskle (Jack Osborn). Ethan (Matt Carver), Ravio (Julie Graham), Yedlami (Alex Austin) and Bescot (Rhiannon Clements).

The Doctor and the companions set up some defensive weapons to try and defeat the cyber invasion, but they prove extremely unreliable. The Cyberdrones blow them up with ease.
3. Which of the human survivors was the first to die?

Answer: Fuskle

Fuskle runs into the middle of a fire fight. The whole time, the Doctor is yelling for him to get down, and Fuskle is busy ignoring her advice. Fuskle is blown up by a blast from one of the Cyberdrones.

Fuskle was played by Jack Osborn (no relation to Ozzie). This was his first appearance on television, short lived as it was.
4. The particle projectors was one of the defenses the Doctor set up. What does it project?

Answer: gold dust

The particle projector was supposed to spew out gold particles, which Cyberman are allergic to. We don't get to see whether it worked, because the Cyberdrones blew it up rather quickly.

Gold has long been known to be a weakness of the Cybermen, as it clogs their respiratory systems. Adric used his gold medallion to suffocate a Cyberman in "Earthshock" (1982). The Seventh Doctor used golden weapons against the Cybermen in "Silver Nemesis" (1988), the 25th anniversary special. The Cyberman attempted to destroy the planet Voga, which was made of gold, in "Revenge of the Cybermen" (1975).
5. What is the name of the man guarding the escape portal in "Ascension of the Cybermen"?

Answer: Ko Sharmus

The elderly man was named Ko Sharmus. He had been holding out hope there were other human survivors. The planet contains a portal to other dimensions known as The Boundary, located on the shores on an ocean.

Ko Sharmus was played by Irish actor Ian McElhinney. He has frequently played a police officer or military man during a 40 year career. Some of his more notable roles include General Dodonna in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016), Val-El in the series "Krypton" (2018), and Ser Barristan Selmy in "Game of Thrones" (2011-15).
.
Ro Laren was a Bajoran character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Madame Kovarian was the woman who held Amy Pond captive so she could kidnap her baby (Melody Pond/River Song).
6. What somewhat unusual adjective does Ravio use to compliment Graham?

Answer: strange

Graham throws out a bit of Cockney slang, and Ravio calls him strange. When Graham tries to apologize for being strange, Ravio says that it is a compliment; she like strange.

Ravio was played by Julie Graham. She has been acting since 1986. Fans of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" may remember her as Ruby White in "Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith."
7. On what level of the ship do Graham and Ravio discover the Cyber Warriors?

Answer: Level 139

Graham states they are on level 139, which he declares an odd affinity for. They discover row upon row of pods containing Cybermen. Ravio notes there are ten doors on each level in a ship that had several hundred levels, with potentially thousands of Cybermen. That was when they decided running was a good strategy.
8. What does the Doctor see when she looks into the Boundary portal?

Answer: Gallifrey

The Doctor saw Gallifrey, destroyed as the Master had shown her. Gallifrey is the home planet of the Time Lords, one of the oldest races in the universe. The Master dropped a major bombshell on the Doctor when he revealed he had destroyed their home world during "Spyfall: Part Two" (2020).

Mondas is the original home planet of the Cybermen, first seen in "The Tenth Planet" (1966). While much of this season took place on 20th Century Earth, "Ascension" took place in the distant future. (The second dystopian Earth this season). The Twelfth Doctor encountered Cybermen on a spaceship in "World Enough and Time" (2017).
9. Who emerges from the Boundary Portal at the end of "Ascension of the Cybermen?"

Answer: The Master

The Master (Sacha Dhawan) makes a dramatic entrance, declaring that everything the Doctor knows is a lie, and the truth will be revealed.

We met Ashad the Lone Cyberman (Patrick O'Kane" during "The Hauting of Villa Diodati" (2020). While he did play an important role in "Ascension" he was on the Cyber carrier at the end of the episode.

Bill Potts was a Cyberbeing in "The Doctor Falls" (2017) but was later converted into a mystical water being by her girlfriend Heather. Since she can travel anywhere there is water, she could have shown up, theoretically.

Last we knew, Yaz was on the Cyber Warrior ship facing off against thousands of Cybermen. No "deus ex machina" rescue, at least not this episode.
10. Who directed the series 12 episode "Ascension of the Cybermen?"

Answer: Jamie Magnus Stone

Jamie Magnus Stone returns after directing "Spyfall: Part One" and "Praxeus" earlier this season. He directed the two-part series close "Ascension" and "The Timeless Childen." Stone began directing in 2008, and has worked mostly in television. He has experience with time traveling from the comedy series "Tripped" (2015) and with period dramas from the World War II series "X Company" (2015-16).

Chris Chibnall, who has been the "Doctor Who" show runner since 2018, wrote "Ascencion" as part of the two-part series finale for series 12. Chibnall has been criticized for his running of the show over last two years, but he has also written some of the better episodes, including "Spyfall" (2020).

Evan McCabe played Brendan the Irish police officer. He is fairly new to acting, with two roles prior to "Doctor Who" in "Berlin Station" and "Striking Out" in 2018.

Nicholas Briggs is the voice of the Cybermen as well as the Daleks, voice work he started when the reboot began in 2005. Briggs has also supplied his voice to a variety of video games, including several "Doctor Who" related games.
