Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Series 12 of "Doctor Who" opened with a jaw-dropping surprise! Which villainous Time Lord made a return in "Spyfall, Part 1"?

Answer: The Master

The Master's return was a surprise because Missy (his previous incarnation) apparently died with no chance of regeneration in the series 10 episode "The Doctor Falls". At first, the Doctor didn't recognise him because he was pretending to be an MI6 agent known as "O".

The Master revealed himself at the end of the episode when the Doctor caught a mistake he made in his cover story. Seconds later, the Master teleported, leaving a bomb on board the plane carrying the Doctor and her friends.
2. In "Spyfall, Part 2", the Doctor was without her TARDIS, but managed to travel through time by other means. Which of these characters and time periods did she NOT visit?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century

Daniel Barton was the 21st century tech giant who the Doctor and friends had been investigating. While Graham, Yaz, and Ryan remained in 2020, the Doctor was involuntarily transported to the 19th century. There, she met Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage - two pioneers of computer programming. When the Doctor and Ada were transported to the 20th century, they met Noor Inayat Khan in Paris. She was a British spy and wireless operator during World War II.

Queen Elizabeth I does appear a few times in Doctor Who (including "The Chase", "The Shakespeare Code", and "The Day of the Doctor"), but she doesn't feature in this story.
3. Graham had collected enough coupons to win a luxury holiday! When they arrived, however, the Doctor discovered that the planet they were on had been designated 'Orphan 55'. What was another name for Orphan 55?

Answer: Earth

An orphan planet was one that had become uninhabitable. Orphan 55, where the 'fakaction' had been set up, was radioactive and the atmosphere didn't contain enough oxygen to allow humans to breathe. An old Russian sign in an underground tunnel led the Doctor, Yaz, and Graham to conclude that Orphan 55 was in fact a future Earth.

The planet had been devastated by climate change and nuclear war. The elite classes had evacuated and those left behind had evolved into creatures known as Dregs.
4. Nikola Tesla was being tracked down by aliens known as the Skithra in "Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror". Why did they want him?

Answer: They wanted him to be the engineer for their ship.

Tesla had designed and built many machines for lots of different purposes. One of his inventions had uncovered a signal that he believed came from Mars. It was actually from the Skithra's alien spaceship. The Skithra didn't build anything for themselves: they took what they wanted from other races.

The queen was so impressed with Tesla's technological abilities that she kidnapped him and insisted he work as their engineer.
5. Captain Jack Harkness made a return in "Fugitive of the Judoon" and a new character, Ruth, was introduced. 'Ruth' was a false identity, though. Who was she really?

Answer: The Doctor

What a revelation it was! "Fugitive of the Judoon", along with later episodes in the series, added a whole new twist to the "Doctor Who" canon. Ruth appeared to be a tour guide in a small English city, but her life started to fall apart when the Judoon arrived looking for a fugitive. Ruth revealed herself to be the Doctor, though neither remembered the other's incarnation - so which version of the Doctor had forgotten her past?
6. In "Praxeus", there were aggressive birds, a sunken submarine, a missing astronaut, and people developing a scaly rash. What exactly was 'Praxeus'?

Answer: A pathogen

Praxeus was a pathogen that thrived on plastic. It had infected a distant planet and devastated the race of aliens that lived there. Suki was an alien scientist who was trying to find a cure for the disease on Earth, as the planet was saturated with plastic. Her crew's ship was damaged when it landed and some of the Praxeus bacteria escaped, causing havoc across the world.
7. In "Can You Hear Me?", Rakaya was trapped between two colliding planets and Zellin was on a mission to save her. What was special about them?

Answer: They were immortal.

Mental health was a prevailing theme in "Can You Hear Me?" as the characters faced their worst fears. At first, Graham thought Rakaya was in trouble and needed saving. In reality, she was an immortal, god-like being who thrived on the fears of others. Zellin concocted a situation to trick the Doctor into freeing Rakaya from her prison so that they could continue to cause torment across the universe.
8. "The Haunting of Villa Diodati" was a horror-filled adventure. Which famous historical characters did the Doctor and her friends meet?

Answer: Mary Shelley and Lord Byron

The Lone Cyberman had arrived in 1816 from the future. As the guardian, it was Percy Bysshe Shelley's job to protect the Cyberium from him. Strange things were happening in the Villa Diodati, the house Lord Byron stayed in while he was in Switzerland.

A skull and a skeletal hand were on the loose and the rooms were folding in on themselves. That was all before a half-formed Cyberman appeared! In the story, it is implied that Mary Shelley's experiences that night inspired her to write "Frankenstein".
9. In the penultimate episode of series 12, an infamous enemy of the Doctor (made of converted humans) returned in force. Complete the episode title: "Ascension of the...".

Answer: Cybermen

The Lone Cyberman was gathering an army of followers in "Ascension of the Cybermen". There were only a few humans left and they were always on the run. Wherever they went, the Cybermen followed. While under attack, the Doctor and Ryan managed to commandeer a cybership with the help of one of the survivors.

A group including Yaz and Graham made it into space on a failing ship, but they eventually had to take refuge in an abandoned cybership. Unfortunately, the Lone Cyberman had followed them and began to wake up the dormant army on board.
10. Which of the Doctor's enemies teamed up in "The Timeless Children"?

Answer: The Master and the Cybermen

The series 12 finale was full of revelations. Firstly, the Time Lords - along with the ability to regenerate - were descended from a 'timeless child' found by a space explorer called Tecteun. The child's genes had been spliced into Gallifrey's inhabitants, though the Time Lords were artificially given a 12-life limit. It had been suggested that the Doctor had a forgotten past in "Fugitive of the Judoon", and in "The Timeless Children" it was confirmed: the Doctor was the timeless child.

Finally, at the end of the episode, the Master collaborated with the Lone Cyberman to create a new race of Cyber-Time Lord hybrids.
