Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening montage sequence took place over a period of several months. To the sound of "Something Stupid", what did we see occur during that time?

Answer: The increasing separation between Jimmy and Kim

The montage featured a split screen, and we initially saw Jimmy and Kim doing their morning routine together with Jimmy putting toothpaste on Kim's toothbrush. They ate dinner together in the beginning with Jimmy reaching across the split screen to pour wine in Kim's glass.

But as the montage progressed, they were increasingly apart. Kim moved into her office at the law firm, while Jimmy sold burner phones out of a van. Kim got her nameplate on her office door, and Jimmy got a box of business cards: "Need to Call? Buy from Saul!" They ate dinner separately and seemed to be on different time schedules.

The somber ending: Kim got into bed facing away from Jimmy, and the light faded to black on her half of the screen while Jimmy stared quietly away.

The version of "Something Stupid" played during the montage was by the Israeli pop band Lola Marsh and was specifically commissioned for the show according to editor Skip MacDonald; the best known version of the song recorded by Frank and Nancy Sinatra was too short for the montage.
2. During the opening montage, Kim had her cast removed and her power ponytail returned. What significant event occurred in Jimmy's life during the montage?

Answer: He completed his pre-prosecution diversion program.

One of the reasons we realized that a lot of time had passed during the montage was that we saw the dates on Jimmy's pre-prosecution diversion (PPD) file. His first visit towards the beginning of the montage showed June 3, 2003; midway through the montage we saw October 13, 2003, and the last visit showed January 12, 2004.

The earlier files were filed in a drawer labeled "PPD Cases - Current", but the last one was filed in "PPD Cases - 2004 Completed". Jimmy didn't immediately get his license back however; he later mentioned to Kim that it would take a month or so to get it back.

Incidentally, the cast that Kim wore was a real plaster cast. Actress Rhea Seehorn had to report to the set two hours early to have the cast applied each morning, and then it would be sawed off at the end of the day. According to Seehorn, co-creator Peter Gould wanted the cast "to have the certain sheen that real plaster has". So she was very glad when the cast permanently came off!
3. Jimmy conducted a tour of a possible law office for Wexler McGill, but he wasn't showing the place to Kim. Who received the tour?

Answer: Huell

Jimmy still hadn't given up on his dream of a Wexler McGill law office. He found an old house near the courthouse and wanted to show it to Kim but first he ran it by Huell. The biggest bedroom he had planned for "the partner". Jimmy asked Huell: "If you were a lawyer, this would be a great place, right?" Huell disagreed: "If I was a lawyer? Nope. Big glass high-rise, 40th floor...

When I'm not on my boat". Incidentally, Jimmy mentioned getting a Keurig machine for the lunchroom, which seemed like an anachronism for 2004, but it turns out Keurig launched its office coffee makers back in the late 1990s.
4. Hector Salamanca had regained consciousness and was working with the doctor Gus had brought in. How was Hector communicating?

Answer: By tapping his right index finger

Hector would tap once for yes and not tap at all for no. The doctor showed Hector pictures and asked him "yes or no" questions about the picture. When he responded quickly, she congratulated him. While Hector was working with the doctor, a staff member came in with his lunch, and as she started to leave, Hector pushed a plastic water cup off of his table.

The doctor told him not to worry; it was just a muscle spasm, but Hector was ogling the woman as she bent down to clean up the water.
5. Jimmy and Kim attended an office party at Kim's firm that didn't go well. What topic was being discussed when Jimmy usurped the conversation?

Answer: Company retreat

Jimmy was fitting in pretty well as he made the rounds meeting her co-workers, but a visit to Kim's stylish office changed his mood. He measured the room and found it was significantly larger than the one in the house he'd shown to Huell. After a drink, he joined Kim and a group who were discussing company retreats with Rich Schweikert. Rich mentioned that he "was thinking of splurging a little this year" so they weren't "outdone by the competition".

He suggested a Taos ski trip, but Jimmy couldn't resist upping the ante.

He first mentioned Telluride, and when Rich pointed out that it was a long drive, Jimmy suggested renting a party bus. When Rich told Jimmy, "You certainly don't think small", Jimmy upped it once again - Aspen: "Aspen is like Telluride on steroids".

As Jimmy went on, more people joined the group to listen to Jimmy's pitch, and Rich looked increasingly uncomfortable. When Rich said that it would be "a nine-hour bus ride", Jimmy suggested "a private chartered jet". Kim had a nervous smile on her face, and Rich didn't look thrilled. During the ride home, Kim looked perturbed, but merely stated, "Well that was something". Jimmy had a "mission accomplished" look on his face and responded, "Yup".
6. Work was continuing on Gus's underground facility, but what setback was encountered during this episode?

Answer: A forklift driver knocked down one of the support poles.

We were treated to a second montage sequence in this episode, and to the sounds of Burl Ives' "Big Rock Candy Mountain", we watched the German crew being transported from the warehouse where they were living to the laundry facility. The men then descended through a hole in the ground into a cavernous underground room. Mike and Werner watched them as they worked, and Werner explained that they were ready to pour the concrete walls after one more blast to clear a rock for the elevator shaft. While they are discussing the blast, one of the workers hit a pole with a fork lift, sending it crashing to the ground.

The worker Kai was furious with him, telling him that it would take a while to fix this, and they wanted to go back home. The forklift driver told Kai that he wasn't the boss, and a shoving match ensued which Mike stopped by yelling at the men in German. Later, Mike joined Werner for a drink at the warehouse. Mike asked about sending Kai home, but Werner told him that Kai was his best demolition man. Werner pointed out that the men thought it would be an eight month job, but they weren't even half through: "You can't keep men locked away forever.

They need fresh air, a change of scenery, and... you understand?"
7. Gus invited Hector's doctor for dinner at his home. After getting an update on his condition, what decision did Gus make regarding Hector?

Answer: He was discontinuing Hector's treatment.

Dr. Bruckner, the Johns-Hopkins doctor that Gus had hired met with Gus at his home to discuss Hector's progress. Gus wanted to know whether it was the same Hector Salamanca that he knew. She couldn't confirm if he was but said that Hector was making incremental progress "every day".

She showed Gus a tape of the session she had with Hector that day. Gus saw Hector knock the cup off the table and asked whether Hector had done it before. The doctor said it was just an involuntary movement, but Gus thought otherwise.

He saw the way Hector watched the woman. A satisfied smirk came to Gus's face. He thanked the doctor for her work and told her that she could return to her practice at Johns-Hopkins. She seemed surprised because she felt Hector could progress even further: "With sustained intensive care, he may eventually learn how to talk and even walk again".

But Gus said, "Perhaps we should temper our expectations".
8. While Jimmy was selling phones from the van, Huell was assisting him and providing security. What did Huell do to get himself arrested?

Answer: Hit an undercover officer with a bag of sandwiches

While Jimmy was selling phones from the van, a man pulled up and showed him the business card: "Is this you, Saul Goodman?" Jimmy realized the man was a cop: "That's right officer". The policeman said that he got the card from a drug dealer who was using a drop phone that he'd bought from Jimmy.

He wanted Jimmy to sell his phones elsewhere - in front of a shopping center where his customers would be soccer moms, but Jimmy said that his customer base was right where he was located. Their conversation got a bit heated, and as they were arguing, Huell walked up, carrying a bag of sandwiches.

He had head phones on so he couldn't hear what was going on nor could he hear Jimmy say, "He's a cop". He thought Jimmy was being harassed so he smacked the man with the bag of sandwiches, knocking him to the ground.

The man's badge was then visible. Unfortunately for Huell, the officer had arrested him three years earlier for theft, so the prosecutor believed Huell knew it was a cop he was hitting.
9. When Jimmy found out that Huell was going to be sentenced to a couple years in jail, he went to Kim for assistance. Besides doing a favor for Jimmy, what was Kim's interest in Huell's case?

Answer: He was getting a stiffer sentence than similar cases.

Huell told Jimmy that he was going "to bounce"; he had no intention of doing jail time. Jimmy told him that it wasn't a good idea: "Three years from now, you're pulled over for a broken tail light and now you're not just a guy who shoved a cop, you're a guy who shoved a cop and ran". "Then I just won't drive with a broken tail light," Huell responded.

When Jimmy pointed out that he'd eventually be caught, Huell retorted that "they didn't catch D.B. Cooper". Jimmy told him to let him (Jimmy) fix things: "I don't need to be a lawyer, I'm a Magic Man". Jimmy then went to see Kim. Kim was shocked to hear that Jimmy was selling burner phones on the street, and she looked flabbergasted when he suggested that they get the cop drunk and make him look bad in court.

She told Jimmy she wasn't going to do that, but that she'd look into the case. Kim researched other cases and found that the other defendants had been given lighter sentences than what the prosecutor wanted for Huell: "This is unequal justice.

In this case, the officer was not injured at all. He was hit with a bag of sandwiches". In the other cases, the officers had been injured but the defendants received probation. The prosecutor said there wouldn't be any negotiation on the case: "And honestly I don't understand why you want anything to do with this. On one side, I've got a decorated police officer doing his job. One the other, you have a professional thief who threw him to the ground. And our only witness is a scumbag disbarred lawyer who peddles drop phones to criminals". Kim said, "You don't know the whole story" and walked out.
10. At the end of the episode, Kim was on her way to meet Huell when she changed her mind and went into a store. What did we see her loading into her shopping cart?

Answer: Office supplies

After the meeting with the prosecutor, Kim met Jimmy in the courthouse parking lot and gave him the bad news: "Huell can't run. He's gonna have to put on his big boy pants and go to jail. At least for a little while". Jimmy thanked her for trying and told her: "You do your thing and I'll do mine".

He drove off leaving Kim to wonder what he meant. She was heading to meet Huell when suddenly she turned the car around and went into an office supply store. There she started loading her cart up with various office supplies.

She then stopped and called Jimmy: "Whatever you're doing, don't... I have a better way".
