Miranda Vower, a part time receptionist at a financial firm, was on her way home. She stopped to watch a news report in a store front window about an abducted child.

When they looked for homicidal evidence, Mac and Stella found none. Stella summed up the case as the lady fell out of her heels. The woman tripped over her heel when it stuck in a grating and fell through a storefront. The decorations in the storefront fell on her and killed her.

A very tired Stella came home and heard screaming of a little girl, crying "I want to go home!" from one of the other apartments on her floor. Stella's neighbor, Bonnie Dillard, told Stella that she volunteered to help her sister out and what they thought would be a fun slumber party turned into a nightmare.

Stella's first instinct as a cop was to get everyone out of the building and she did not have time to save her things. She went straight to Bonnie Dillard's apartment and saved Bonnie's son from the fire. Later when Mac came to check on Stella, he brought her coffee. Stella told him that the building's sprinkler system did not work and all her things were destroyed. Mac offered Stella to stay with him, but Stella declined.

While going through her burned apartment, Stella noticed pieces of paper behind her burned furniture. The burned paper had the words "Help Me" scribbled on the top. Stella was not sure how long the notes had been there or if they were connected to a victim or the fire. She brought them to Adam at the lab to analyze.

Answer: The arsonist committed the fire as the perfect suicide.

There was evidence of heavy and low burns, but Mac said there was no reason why the victim could not get out. Lindsay observed that the furniture went up in seconds and there were accelerant pour patterns on the carpet with glass.

Mac theorized someone else was in the apartment at the time of the fire, possibly an attacker that prevented the victim from escaping. When Detective Flack returned identifying the victim as a former arsonist, and possibly the fire starter, Mac had an uneasy gut feeling. He stated most arsonists like to watch their work from afar. The pieces did not line up with the theory, but Stella suggested maybe this was the arsonist's idea of a perfect suicide.

Goldfish lose their color when they are not exposed to light. The goldfish found in the apartment where the victim was found were white. Lindsay traced the timeline of death based on the number of days it took for the goldfish to lose their color. The timeline of death occurred days before the fire.

Answer: The victim died of a ruptured spleen days after a severe car accident.

Dr. Sid surprised the CSIs when he revealed the body was a woman and not the arsonist they suspected. Later in his findings, he determines the cause of death was a car accident, based on injuries on her bones, that line up with an airbag explosion. Official cause of death was ruled as a ruptured spleen, which had been damaged by the fire, delaying the doctor's discovery. Despite the tear suggesting a severe impact, Dr. Sid ruled her death was not immediate and occurred over several days.

The findings lined up with the arsonist's story that he had a friend watching his apartment and his goldfish while he was out of town.

Answer: the child's fingerprints on a cigarette lighter

The CSIs discovered through a model, that the fire started in Bonnie Dillard's apartment and had traveled to the arsonists through the vent. The fire had done the most damage in the arsonist's apartment because of the furniture quality and a broken oil lamp.

Mac and Stella found a cigarette lighter with thumbprints in the Dillard's son's room. The parents of Bailey O'Dell had registered her thumbprints in the crime database, hoping to find their child. When the thumbprints on the lighter did not match Bonnie Dillard or her son, Stella realized that the little girl Bonnie had in her apartment was Bailey O'Dell. Bailey had started the fire and was a victim of Bonnie kidnapping her.

Answer: Bonnie's child was taken away from her because Child Services did not think she could be a successful single parent.

Bonnie confessed that the girl was from a divorced home, and the mother worked in her floral shop. She said the girl was much happier where she was because her mom did not have time for her. When Detective Flack asked Bonnie to tell them where the girl was, Bonnie refused.

She told Flack that her own child had been taken away from her because Child Services thought she was incapable of being a single mom and told her every child needed two parents. Flack begged Bonnie not to take Bailey away from her mother.

Answer: He was a kidnap victim too.

Adam discovered through thumbprints on notes that Bonnie Dillard's son was an eleven year-old boy who had been kidnapped two years earlier than the missing girl. The boy had tried to get help from Stella by pushing help notes through the wall, but Stella had seen the hole as "stupid boy stuff" and assumed he was spying on her. Bonnie had convinced him that his real mom didn't care and wouldn't come for him, so he stopped trying to escape until Bonnie came home with her second victim.

He had started the fire to bring the police to their rescue. Stella apologized to him when he told her his story and that his real name was Austin Tanner. Mac arranged Austin to be picked up by his real mom but warned her Austin had believed for years she didn't love him or search to find him. Austin's real mom cried and said after all these years, he was coming home.
