At first the CSIs guessed the scuba diver may have panicked causing him to drown. Sheldon Hawkes, who was formerly a doctor, found a dive mask and when he removed it, he noticed petechial hemorrhaging. Danny observed the scuba diver had a tank with 90% oxygen. Detective Taylor asked his crew, "How does a guy with a full tank of oxygen and a backed up regulator drown?"

Answer: a prosthetic ear

Starfish were feasting on the scuba diver's internal organs and skin. Sid noticed that they were not able to eat the ear because it was prosthetic. He gave the ear to Stella, because it contained a serial number that could help her find the man's identity.

He ruled the possible cause of death as cyanide, after he found high levels of the toxin in tests. Sheldon was put on the mission to find out how the diver was poisoned underwater.

Lindsay found insulation in the starfish mouths that lead her back to an abandoned subway as the primary crime scene. She informed Mac that in the 1960's, the New York subway cars had their best insulation in its walls and floor tiles. The fibers of that insulation were encased in an epoxy resin, a substance that does not degrade and caused a stir with environmentalists when the subway cars were dumped in the east river.

After Stella and Don questioned the victim's boss, they learned the dive partner was missing the same amount of time as the victim. Stella researched further and discovered that the partner was filed as a missing person by his family.

Danny and Sheldon found a hole punched into the oxygen tubing of the scuba gear. Based on the evidence of cyanide, they concluded that the murder weapon was a syringe that injected cyanide into the tubing of the scuba diver, while he was under the water.

Answer: a second murdered scuba diver

At the primary crime scene, Danny and Sheldon found a second scuba diver. Dr. Sid confirmed through dental records it was Matt Hamlin, the diving partner of Doug Holden. The cause of death was ruled that Matt died at the same time as his partner from cyanide of the same nature.

Sheldon and Danny dived underwater while Mac and Lindsay watched back at the lab. Mac and Lindsay were able to take pictures from the screen. Sheldon and Danny located many gold coins in the shipwreck as well as the murder weapon. After sending their evidence up, Sheldon stayed behind to explore more.

A methane gas bubble exploded causing wood from the ship to trap Sheldon's oxygen tank. Mac and Lindsay were unable to make contact or see what happened through the cameras, but Danny was able to cut Sheldon from his equipment and pulled him back up to the surface.

Sheldon ended up having a broken rib and a fractured arm.

Answer: a reused syringe

The murderer had reused a syringe, linked to pain medicine for arthritis. Based on the chemical analysis it confirmed that cyanide had been put in a gas form in the syringe and injected into the scuba diver's gear. Stella recapped that one of the foreign exchange diving students from the school had an arthritic injury in his leg and went to make an arrest.

Answer: She found a bomb lab while Mac arrested one of the the murderers.

When the murderer ran, Stella noticed that his backpack was full of foreign passports. She knocked the door down with the police and uncovered a bomb lab with switches, wires and plans. She ran to the car and questioned the man but he refused to tell her or Mac where the bomb was. Mac tried to use force in the investigation room, but ended up releasing the man when Flack came in the with speaker log from the United Nations.

The log was among the bomb plans.

Answer: They used a signal jammer.

Mac and a squad of scuba divers found the second bomber in the water with the controls. When Mac asked the bomber to show his hands, the bomber pressed the trigger for the underwater bomb to go off. The bomber was confused when nothing happened. The bomb squad had already jammed the signal and the bomb did not go off. Mac told the bomber that it was over.
