Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fern panicked after finding a body with no pulse in the park. She denied any involvement to detectives, who found her covered in Michael Bentley's blood. Why was Bentley's death such a shock and suspicious?

Answer: He had just been acquitted for raping her.

Fern became the primary suspect with motive, when detectives found her covered in Bentley's blood, knowing he had been acquitted for her violent rape. However Fern insisted she was innocent and had been on her way home.

Fern saw Bentley lying on the ground and her nurse instincts kicked in to save a life. She had no idea who it was until she got closer and checked the body's pulse. She panicked when she realized it was her rapist from her case in court. Fern explained to the detectives, the blood on her clothes transferred to her clothes. When she realized the man was dead, she rushed home and tried to get the blood off.
2. Bentley was a rapist that was stabbed to death multiple times with four knives. When the detectives began their initial crime scene investigation into Bentley's death, what did they notice that made Fern an unusual suspect?

Answer: Fern was half his size with no injuries.

The case appeared to be open and shut when Fern was arrested, but upon closer inspection of the scene, the evidence seemed to leave many unanswered questions. Fern had no injuries and Bentley had been stabbed four times. Bentley was also much larger and stronger than Fern, but had no defensive wounds. Bentley had been running in circles, but didn't fight back and didn't escape. Mac commented that maybe he didn't have a choice.
3. Businesswoman Joanna Morgan was found murdered on the steps of Metropolitan Museum of Art by a security guard. They find a gun and no bullets. What do the detectives rule as cause of death based on their initial exam of the body at the crime scene?

Answer: shot in the back

Based on the wounds, Joanna Morgan was shot in the back, through the chest, at a downward angle. She also had a wrist fracture. The detectives found a gun but were unable to locate any of the bullets. Danny said he had worked a case where a shooter would take the gun and leave the bullets, but he had never worked a case where the shooter would leave the gun and take the bullets. Lindsey said it didn't look like a robbery because she had her purse, wallet, and money on her.
4. Medical Examiner Sid told Detective Stella that the knife wounds that killed Michael Bentley were made with great precision to the anatomy. What professional background did he tell Stella to look for?

Answer: medical

Bentley was killed with four stab wounds that were deliberate to specific muscles and organs. Sid explained that the kill wound was a specific point in the back, through the muscles, and into the heart. He believed it was intentional and professional. He told Stella she should look into someone with a medical background. One of the suspects in custody was a nurse.
5. Stella examined the knives used to kill Michael Bentley and found that two of them were coated in hairspray. What decorative female item did she think the killer disguised the murder weapon as?

Answer: hair sticks

The knives that were coated in hairspray were thin enough to be used as hair chopsticks and served a dual purpose as small swords. The killer took the knives out of their hair and surprised their victim in a combative fight fashion. Stella theorized that the killer lured the victim as a friendly female and then surprised the victim into fight they could not run from.
6. Mac theorized from the blood spatter and victim's foot patterns that the victim was killed in a specific combat style. Which fight style did Mac prove Michael Bentley's killer used, similar to an entertainment in Spain that involved immobilizing a charging bovine?

Answer: bullfighting

The blood patterns and stab wounds matched the patterns of bullfighting techniques used in Spain. The knives also were were small enough to be used as bullfighting swords to stab and immobilize the right anatomy in a fight. Mac described the method of death as an intentional, slow, and painful homicide.

The killer cornered their victim and then provoked them into a charge by immobilizing one muscular part at a time. When the victim was in the final stages of bleeding and paralysis, the killer stabbed him in the back and through the chest, which gave him one fatal wound to the heart.
7. Danny teased Lindsey for killing squirrels when she used a certain tool to find the trajectory range for the bullet that killed Joanna Morgan. What did Lindsey use to find the bullet from the close range gun shot?

Answer: a slingshot

Danny traced the original bullet trajectory to a pillar, but found the bullet had bounced off the stone. To trace the range of the bullet without shooting off a gun, Lindsey created a homemade slingshot from tools in the first aid kit and one of Danny's bullets. The missing bullet was found next to the bullet Danny and Lindsey shot off with the slingshot.
8. The prime suspect Fern, was raped by Michael Bentley. The detectives later found out the night of his death, Michael Bentley had dined with a lady named Amber Stanton, while Joanna Morgan was killed by a man that raped Amber. Based on the evidence, what common link did the detectives discover Joanna Morgan and Amber Stanton have with their suspect Fern?

Answer: Joanna Morgan and Amber Stanton were both rape victims like Fern.

All three women had been raped, but the detectives were not sure how they connected with each other. After discovering Michael Bentley was dining with Amber Stanton before he died, Amber Stanton became their number one suspect. They discovered like Fern, she was also raped.

They suspected that Amber had seen Fern's case in the news and had plotted a revenge killing. Joanna Morgan was a rape victim that confronted an unknown male. The detectives believed she a tried a revenge killing but was overpowered. Later they discovered the killer in Joanna's case was Amber's rapist.
9. Joanna's stomach contents revealed that the night she was with her killer, she had eaten at a diner and gotten a bad case of food poisoning bacteria. Where did the detectives find Joanna's killer?

Answer: trying to get painkillers at a local hospital

Steve Kaplan tried to go to the local ER demanding pain killers for food poisoning. Hawkes, a former doctor, had examined Joanna's stomach contents and discovered she had an extreme case of food poisoning bacteria from the food she ate before she died.

The detectives noted that pain killers were not normally prescribed for stomach illness. They lured Kaplan in with the story he could file a complaint to sue the restaurant, then examined his shoulder where he got in a fight with Joanna. He was arrested for murder, which he claimed was self defense.

He claimed Joanna pulled a gun out and he shot her to protect himself.
10. Amber Stanton was linked to Michael Bentley's death based on a bandage at the crime scene, that matched the pattern of shoes Joanna Morgan had given her. The two had become friends on their subway route to work. Why did the two of them decide to kill rapists like the man who hurt Fern?

Answer: They felt violated every time they saw a rapist freed by the judicial system.

Amber Stanton had been raped by Steve Kaplan, and Michael Bentley had raped Joanna Morgan. Both women confided in each other and became friends on subway train ride to work everyday. When Michael Bentley walked away from the rape of Fern, Amber felt raped all over again, especially since one of them had been raped by him before.

They made a pact to start punishing rapists and putting justice into their own hands. Amber's plan worked, but Joanna was murdered in the process of hers. Fern did not know anything about the plan; Amber did not count on her nurse's instincts to try save Bentley in the park.

In the end, Fern was the only winner that got to walk away free.
