During the old man's tales of coffins being scratched from the inside, plagues, and morticians watching graves for bells tied to the graves, a body is stirred when the old man rings a bell for a practical joke. No one is laughing when a man comes out of the ground and attacks. The young man runs off in fright, leaving his co-worker screaming. The ground man runs off towards the highway.

The officer tells them that the community believed the house is haunted. The apparent suicide of the father and murder of the family members has happened on the anniversary of the suicide in the previous owner's family. The previous family also had a missing child, and currently the officers are looking for the missing daughter of the family, who has not been located among the bodies.

Answer: Lindsay notices a bullet hole in the wall with fresh blood.

Lindsay is videotaping the crime scene, when a picture frame falls off the wall. It reveals a large bullet hole in the wall with blood pouring from it. Lindsay listens to the wall and hears a small voice crying, "Help me." When they take apart the wall, they find the missing little girl who has been shot. They rush her to the hospital.

Answer: an old woman

Lindsay is processing the crime scene, when an old woman appears and scares her. She frantically grabs her and tells her to leave the house. Lindsay fights her off and the woman disappears through a tunnel in the wall. Lindsay discovers this is where the little girl went to hide, before she was shot.

She asks Danny if he saw the woman, and Danny tells her no. Lindsay tries to convince others that she is not crazy and Danny tells the officers to re-secure the perimeter.

Answer: There was a zombie flash mob blocking traffic.

A zombie flash mob was blocking traffic on Halloween, when the man fell down dead. Flack tells Mac there are plenty of witnesses who saw the man fall, but thought the man was over-acting as part of the flash zombie party. They did not realize something was wrong until it was too late.

Answer: The man had previously died, before he was walking on the street.

Dr. Sid tells Mac that the victim suffered blunt and sharp force trauma from an object with raised lettering. The victim's body temperature confirmed the victim had been dead 8 hours, but witnesses saw the man walking down the streets of New York City three hours earlier. Sid answers Stella's confusion by telling her the victim previously died before he was walking in the streets. Dr. Sid tells Mac, medically speaking, their victim is a zombie.

Dr. Sid originally assumes the victim's wounds were from two different weapons. Using computer software to rearrange the wound marks, Mac matches the letters to one weapon: a willow bat. The bat is a wooden, knife-like, shaped board. When Mac tests a willow bat out on a dummy, the blood marks and splatter matches the wounds from his victim.

Answer: The father has little evidence of gunshot residue to prove he was holding the weapon.

Danny finds little evidence of gunshot residue on the father of the four that were murdered. If he had been the shooter of the family, he would have had gunshot residue all over him from handling the weapon. Danny suggests that the father did not commit suicide like originally thought.

Back at the lab, Sheldon confirms Danny's findings by testing firing the gun and matching gun mark patterns. He finds that the gun was shot from four feet away, making it impossible for the father to have been holding the gun.

Answer: a monster

Danny and Lindsay visit Rose in the hospital, but she is unable to talk much. She tries to tell them that she saw a monster but won't describe what happened. Lindsay gasps when the girl hands her the coloring notepad. Her drawing is of a devil face with fire coming out behind it.

Adam finds a diaper and has no explanation for it. Mac shares his findings that the victim had dirt and jute wood on him. He informs Stella that cemetery reported a buried man breaking through a jute coffin on Halloween night. He also explains jute wood is very easy to break out of.

The funeral home identifies the man as Dexter Nebbins, a young lawyer who had a small ceremony the day before Halloween. Stella tells Adam they may have discovered where their victim first rose from the dead.

Lindsay traces the pine sap back to a tree in the yard. When she follows the paths of broken branches, it leads her to the roof and attack, where the killer waited for the family. She finds a liquid stain that has been cleaned up. It tests positive for blood and Danny links it to a blood pool that had been there twenty years ago.

Answer: an insurance scam

Mac traces the first death certificate of Dexter, back to Dexter's friend, a Doctor. Dexter was in debt and had an expensive life insurance policy, that Mac suspects links his death to an insurance scam, benefiting the wife. The doctor would have drugged Dexter and made the death certificate with no questions asked.

Flack looks up credit card receipts and discovers that one purchase was for an oxygen tank, that could have been used in the coffin. Stella reminds Flack there was no evidence of an oxygen tank in the coffin used to bury Dexter. Mac suggests the wife never intended to dig her husband up.

Answer: He has a full body tattoo of the devil.

Lindsay traces articles back to the previous owners of the house. She ages the newspaper photo and discovers it is the identity of a woman who attacked her at the house. Sheldon also uses DNA and connects it to the woman's son, Henry Willows. His DNA was in the system for prior imprisonment.

He shows Lindsay the pictures and the full body tattoo of the devil on Henry's back. They connect it to pictures the little girl drew of what attacked her family.

Answer: the missing child from 20 years ago

The killer was trying to protect his mom, by fetching the body of his sister that had been left in the house when they were evicted. They had spread tales of the house being haunted to keep anyone from buying it, but the new family didn't listen to ghost stories. The killer returned to the house on Halloween and panicked when the family came home before he had escaped. He shot them out of fear they would send him to prison, and then staged it to look like his father's suicide years before.

He explained to the detectives that as a child, he had been playing with his father's gun and accidentally shot his little sister. His mom tried to cover the evidence so they wouldn't send her son to jail.

Answer: stabbed in bed, with the doctor that pronounced the victim dead

Mac and Stella go to the wife's house to bring her in for questioning. They find the needle and medication that were used to sedate their victim, stabbed into the wife and the doctor, who are laying on top of each other in bed. Mac and Stella find that they are still breathing but are in a sedated state.

Mac fills in the gaps of the story. The lawyer who had raised from the coffin, knew his wife had planned to leave him to die. He returned to his house to find his wife and the doctor together, stabbing them with the same needle and drugs they had used on him. They attacked the husband with a weapon but he ran away into the street where he later died. The medicine took it's effect on the doctor and wife, leaving them in a paralyzed state.

Mac and Stella call the paramedics but for now the victims are in a coma from the drugs. Mac tells Stella that the victims are between the living and the dead.
