Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams did not complete a Detour task in the first leg of the race (in Japan).

Answer: True

To be fair, teams did not need to complete a Detour task for the first leg of the race in Japan or the second leg in Vietnam. For the first time during the race, the Detour did not make an appearance until the third leg when teams opened their clues in Ho Chi Minh City. Leg 1 (Japan) actually appeared to be a shorter leg than most. Due to a lengthy flight over the Pacific and an early elimination surprise at the Starting Line in Los Angeles, it's no surprise that teams weren't as busy upon arriving in Tokyo.
2. In Leg 3, how many teams completed the 'Word Play' Detour task (in Ho Chi Minh City)?

Answer: One

In Ho Chi Minh City, teams found their Detour clue waiting outside the Ho Chi Minh City Post Office. This required a choice between 'Child's Play' and 'Word Play'. In 'Child's Play', teams traveled to a city park and needed to transport large, plaster animal statues on a path through the area to a children's playground. En route they needed to collect five balloons of different colours and hand all of these in to claim their next clue.

In 'Word Play', teams climbed to the roof of a city building and looked to the traffic below to find six Vietnamese letters which could be unscrambled to spell the word 'Doc Lap', the Vietnamese word for 'independence'. Once they found the six letters, they could get help from locals to spell the word. Only Marcy and Ron completed the 'Word Play' task while the other nine teams finished 'Child's Play'.
3. In Leg 4, only one team completed the 'Cover' Detour task in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. What was it?

Answer: None of these teams completed 'Cover'

After receiving a clue from the Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city, teams needed to choose either 'Cover' or 'Wrap' in a Detour clue. In 'Cover', only completed by Lance and Keri, teams needed to head to a street to sell four motorbike helmets at a total cost of $10 to a family of four- two adults and two kids).

In 'Wrap', completed by all other teams, they headed to the Russian Market where they were handed a coloured scarf. They then had to match this scarf to one worn by a woman walking through the marketplace, then bring that woman to their stall to get their next clue sending them to Wat Toul Tom Pong.
4. In Leg 5, teams went to Dubai. The Detour was completed at which location?

Answer: Ski Dubai

After a romp through the Margham Sand Dunes outside of the metropolitan area of Dubai, teams traveled into the city to receive a clue at Ski Dubai, an indoor ski hill in the heart of the desert. Here, teams chose either 'Build a Snowman' or 'Find a Snowman'. For 'Build a Snowman', teams needed to bring snow from Ski Dubai outside into the blazing heat and sun and try to create a snowman to an attendant's approval to receive their clue. Maria and Tiffany, Gary and Matt, Mika and Canaan, Sam and Dan, and Lance and Keri did this.

In 'Find a Snowman', Brian and Ericka and Flight Time and Big Easy sledded down the hill in Ski Dubai and searched in large piles of snow for a small snowman which could be traded for their next clue. After this task, teams went to the Pit Stop.
5. In Leg 6 in Dubai, Flight Time and Big Easy completed which Detour option?

Answer: 'Gold'

After arriving at the Old Souk in Dubai, teams chose between 'Glass' and 'Gold' for their Detour. In 'Glass', completed by Meghan and Cheyne, Brian and Ericka, Gary and Matt, and Mika and Canaan, teams needed to assemble twelve glass hookahs using all of the pieces provided for them in a large crate. Once they placed the proper pieces together they would receive their next clue.

In 'Gold', Sam and Dan, Maria and Tiffany, and Flight Time and Big Easy needed to weigh $500,000-worth of gold to the nearest ounce using a scale, actual gold, and the ever-changing market price. Using calculators, most teams made short work of this task.
6. In Leg 7 in the Netherlands, which team completed neither of the Detour tasks?

Answer: Maria and Tiffany

In Leg 7, teams needed to travel to a windmill in Vierhuizen de Marne where they would have to put on traditional Dutch clothing and clogs, and ride bikes to one of two Detour choices, 'Farmers Game' or 'Farmers Dance'. In the former task, teams needed to swim across a small river in their Dutch underwear, then play a local game of golf using sticks with wooden clogs on the end. Once they finished three holes in under eight strokes (each hole) they would receive their next clue. Sam and Dan, Meghan and Cheyne, and Gary and Matt did this. Flight Time and Big Easy and Brian and Ericka completed 'Farmers Dance' in which they needed to hit a high striker, then learn a traditional dance before eating a soused herring in onions to receive their next clue leading to the Pit Stop. Maria and Tiffany were unable to physically complete either task having been so fatigued.

As a result they took a day-long penalty and were forced to leave the race.
7. In Leg 8 in Sweden, all five teams completed the same Detour option.

Answer: True

In Sweden, teams chose the 'Nobel Dynamite' task in which they all went to a rock quarry to construct a bunker wall using burlap sacks and sand and they used dynamite to blow up a part of the quarry to unearth a box containing their next clue. All five teams opted to complete this task citing "blowing something up" as their main reason. Teams not completing this task would've needed to go to a forest to complete 'Viking Alphabet' in which they would've used runestones to decode a large stone puzzle which would lead them to a nearby viking and their next clue.
8. In Leg 9 in Estonia, three teams completed a Detour task which involved playing volleyball under which circumstances?

Answer: In deep mud

In Leg 9, teams traveled to a bog in Keava Raba to find their Detour clue along a park boardwalk. Here, teams chose between 'Serve' and 'Sling'. In 'Serve', teams needed to face off in knee-deep mud against two Estonian volleyball players to score five points and receive their next clue. Meghan and Cheyne, Sam and Dan, and Flight Time and Big Easy finished this.

In 'Sling', Brian and Ericka and Gary and Matt needed to wear bog shoes and walk across a field to a slingshot course. Using slingshots they needed to alternate in shooting at a metal sign. Once any one target was hit, they would be able to claim their clue and continue to the pitstop atop a nearby observation tower.
9. In Leg 10 in Prague, which team was last to complete the 'Slow and Steady' Detour option?

Answer: Brian and Ericka

Upon arriving at Kajaky Troja in Prague, teams found a Detour task. For this, all four competing teams finished 'Slow and Steady' in which they were harnessed into a rope system and pulled themselves along a high rope suspended over an artificial rapids canal. Teams not completing this task would've needed to finish 'Fast and Furious' in which they had to paddle a two-person kayak along the marked course below to reach the clue at the end.

Although Sam and Dan attempted this task, they kept falling out of the boat forcing them to restart from the beginning.

After the task, teams received race ribbons with their next destination written on them: Stavovske Divadlo.
10. Which team completed neither of the Detour options in Leg 11 in the Czech Republic?

Answer: Flight Time and Big Easy

For the final Detour task of the race, teams chose either 'Legend' or 'Lager'. In 'Legend' teams needed to find large wooden golems and cover them in wet clay. They then needed to pull them through the city to a synagogue and they had to get their creations approved by rabbi. Meghan and Cheyne and Sam and Dan completed this. Brian and Ericka completed 'Lager' in which they needed to transport thirty glasses of beer from a brewery to a bar in the city using trays.

After the task, teams went to their final Pit Stop in Prague. Flight Time and Big Easy did not complete this task because they opted to take a four hour penalty for not completing the Road Block.

They were eliminated before completing the Detour.
