Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Quite a few characters and organisations made a return in 'The Magician's Apprentice' and 'The Witch's Familiar'. Which of these characters was trying to track down the Doctor?

Answer: Davros

Davros sent Colony Sarff to find the Doctor. Although he knew it was likely to be a trap, the Doctor answered his summons. Davros tried to trick the Doctor into using his regeneration energy to heal himself (Davros) and the Daleks. Another enemy making a return in this episode was Missy. UNIT also played a central role in 'The Magician's Apprentice', the Sisterhood of Karn, and the Shadow Proclamation made an appearance.
2. In 'Under the Lake' and 'Before the Flood', the Doctor and Clara arrived on a base in a flooded military facility. From Clara's point of view, this was in the future.

Answer: True

The base was underwater and was being used by an energy company to find oil. That was until the crew brought a mysterious spaceship onto the base. Although the Doctor travelled into the past (from Clara's point of view), Clara remained on the base in her future.

I love these two episodes. It's an intriguing story with great characters, and the ghosts that begin to appear are very creepy.
3. At the beginning of 'Under the Lake', the Doctor referred to a particular sequence of events. What is the name that the Doctor uses to refer to the sequence?

Answer: Bootstrap paradox

The 'bootstrap paradox' can also be called a 'causal loop'. The Doctor introduces 'Under the Lake' by telling a story. It went something a little like this:

A time traveller who loves Beethoven decides to go back in time to meet his hero. He turns up at the start of the nineteenth century, but Beethoven isn't a musician. He has no interest in music at all. The time traveller panics: he can't bear the thought of a world without Beethoven's music. The traveller decides to gather up all the sheet music he has and publish it himself using Beethoven's name. Hundreds of years in the future, the time traveller can enjoy his favourite music. But who actually composed Beethoven's fifth symphony?

The episode itself is an example of the bootstrap paradox. The Doctor survived in the past because he copied the plan from his future self. So who came up with the plan?
4. Ashildr made her first appearance in 'The Girl Who Died'. Which race of people was she from?

Answer: Vikings

'The Girl Who Died' was set in a Viking village in England. The Doctor and Clara were kidnapped and taken to the village by a raiding party. While the Doctor was trying to talk his way out of his predicament, a huge face appeared in the sky, claiming to be Odin.

The village's best warriors were taken to 'Valhalla' (they were actually beamed onto a spaceship and killed). Ashildr declared war on the Mire after witnessing the deaths of her friends.
5. 'The Zygon Invasion' followed the events in another 'Doctor Who' episode. Which episode did the Zygons last appear in?

Answer: The Day of the Doctor

'The Day of the Doctor' was the 50th anniversary special broadcast in 2013. The Zygons invaded earth, leading to a series of events that culminated in the threat of a nuclear missile. The Doctor intervened: he wiped the memories of both humans and Zygons, so that neither knew which side they were on.

They were able to agree a peace treaty, which began to collapse at the start of 'The Zygon Invasion'.
6. In 'Sleep No More', Gagan Rassmussen created sleep pods that allowed humans to get all of the sleep they needed in a matter of seconds. The pods were named after an ancient god. What were they called?

Answer: Morpheus

Morpheus was the Greco-Roman god of dreams. The Morpheus sleep pods were created so that people could spend less time sleeping and more hours working. They were used on a 38th century space station. The pods mutated sleep dust, turning it into a creature called a Sandman.
7. One of the Doctor's closest friends died in 'Face the Raven'. Who had to face the raven in order to save Rigsy?

Answer: Clara Oswald

Rigsy (previously seen in 'Flatline') had been sentenced to death by Me. Me was the mayor of a community of aliens living in secret on earth. A number - a Chronolock - was counting down on the back of his neck. When it reached 0, the raven would come for him and he would die. Thinking that she could give the Doctor more time to save Rigsy, Clara took the Chronolock from him.

Unfortunately, Me couldn't remove the Chronolock and Clara had to face the raven.
8. After the death of his friend, the Doctor was teleported out of the trap street. Where did he spend most of 'Heaven Sent'?

Answer: Inside his confession dial

At the end of 'Face the Raven', the Doctor was teleported to an unknown location. With Clara dead, he explored the castle-like structure, trying to work out where he was and what was following him. Finally, the Doctor managed to escape and realised that he was inside his own confession dial. He appeared on Gallifrey, leading into the series finale.
9. Episode eleven, 'Heaven Sent', led into the final episode of the series. Complete the name of the episode in which the Doctor tried to prevent Clara from dying: '_______ Bent'.

Answer: Hell

Using technology on Gallifrey, the Doctor extracted Clara from her timeline, just before the moment of her death. He hoped that he could prevent her death that way, but Clara's pulse never returned. The Doctor wanted to give her a normal life by erasing her memories of him, but Clara altered the device and the Doctor lost his memories of her instead.
10. The 2015 Christmas special, 'The Husbands of River Song', was the first to feature Nardole. Which comic actor played him?

Answer: Matt Lucas

All of these comedians have been in 'Doctor Who', but it was Matt Lucas who played Nardole. Simon Pegg played the Editor in 'The Long Game' in 2005 when the series returned. Lee Evans played the eager Dr Malcolm Taylor in 'Planet of the Dead' in 2009, and Ben Miller was the Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robot of Sherwood' in 2014.

Nardole continued to be a main character in series ten.
