Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many actors had been cast as the Doctor in its first fifty years. Which one did not feature in new footage in the anniversary special?

Answer: William Hartnell

William Hartnell was the one who started it all off as the first Doctor. Unfortunately, he passed away before the fiftieth anniversary. Matt Smith played the eleventh Doctor, who was the 'current' Doctor at the time. David Tennant returned to play the tenth Doctor, and Peter Capaldi made a momentary appearance as the future twelfth Doctor. John Hurt played the War Doctor, and Tom Baker (who played the fourth Doctor) appeared as the museum curator at the end of the episode. All of the other actors who had played the Doctor before 2013 appeared in the episode in archive footage, but not in new material.

Paul McGann featured in a short prequel to the episode. As the eighth Doctor, he regenerated into the War Doctor. Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy (who have also played the Doctor) appeared in the comedy spoof 'The Five(ish) Doctors', which also featured past and present cast and crew as parodies of themselves.
2. There are many nods to the history of 'Doctor Who' in 'The Day of the Doctor'. At the very beginning of the episode, Clara was working at the same school that the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan, went to way back in 1963. What was it called?

Answer: Coal Hill School

The episode opened with a shot of a sign for I.M. Foreman's scrapyard, which was where the Doctor parked the TARDIS in 'An Unearthly Child'. Clara worked at Coal Hill School, which was where Susan went to school in the first episode, and where Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton worked. In 'The Day of the Doctor', the sign outside the gate read 'Chairman of the governors: I. Chesterton'.

Coal Hill was the main setting of the 'Doctor Who' spin-off series, 'Class', in 2016.
3. Thanks to UNIT, the TARDIS was picked up and carried away by helicopter. At which London landmark did the Doctor first meet Kate Stewart and the rest of UNIT?

Answer: The National Gallery

Kate Stewart showed the Doctor a very special painting. It was a 3D Time Lord work of art created with a stasis cube. The first painting that the Doctor saw was of Gallifrey during the Time War. He was then taken to the Undergallery where there were some more stasis cube pictures. However, there was a problem with the paintings: the figures were missing.
4. Which English monarch appeared in the anniversary episode?

Answer: Elizabeth I

The fact that the Doctor was married to Elizabeth I was hinted at in 'The Shakespeare Code' and 'The End of Time' while David Tennant played the Doctor. In 'The Day of the Doctor', the tenth Doctor had a romantic picnic with the Queen. When the eleventh Doctor arrived, it was revealed that there were two Elizabeths: the real one, and a Zygon impersonation.

The eleventh Doctor mocked the tenth for potentially kissing a Zygon. By the end of the episode, the real Queen and the tenth Doctor were married.
5. Which of these TARDIS regulars accompanied the Doctor in 'The Day of the Doctor'?

Answer: Clara Oswald

Clara was teaching at Coal Hill School when she left to meet the Doctor in the TARDIS. They went (well, they were taken) to the National Gallery together, and, towards the end of the episode, she helped all three Doctors to make an important decision while on Gallifrey.

Bill Potts was the twelfth Doctor's companion in 2017, four years after the fiftieth anniversary special.
6. What decision was the War Doctor agonising over during the episode?

Answer: Whether to destroy Gallifrey

From the War Doctor's perspective, the events in the anniversary episode were taking place during the Time War. In the prequel, 'The Night of the Doctor', the eighth Doctor was fatally injured when the spacecraft that we was on crash landed. The Sisterhood of Karn gave him a potion that would allow him to choose his character traits in his next regeneration. He became a 'warrior' in order to fight in the Time War.

The Time War was creating devastation throughout the universe. The War Doctor came to the conclusion that the only way to stop the destruction was to destroy the Daleks and the Time Lords together. He was in a deserted shack on Gallifrey, preparing for the task ahead, when a fissure in time opened to show him the consequences of the choice he had to make.
7. In 1562, the three Doctors were imprisoned. Where were they taken?

Answer: The Tower of London

Queen Elizabeth ordered the Doctors to be imprisoned in the Tower of London. The door was too primitive for them to break out using their sonic screwdrivers. In the present, The Tower of London was the location of UNIT's Black Archive. It was a secret storage facility for alien technology below the London landmark.
8. The War Doctor had acquired a weapon called The Moment. It was sentient, and chose a human form in order to talk to the Doctor. Who did the Moment look like?

Answer: Rose Tyler

The Moment says that, in the form that she had taken, she was Bad Wolf. The name was a reference to the first series of the reboot when Rose absorbed the time vortex. The Moment played by Billie Piper, who also played Rose in series one and two. The War Doctor didn't recognise her, as he first met Rose as the ninth Doctor after the Time War.

He was, however, the only one who could see the Moment's physical form.
9. At the end of the episode, the Doctor had renewed hope of finding Gallifrey because of something the museum curator told him. What was the true title of the painting?

Answer: Gallifrey Falls No More

The Doctors worked together to try to save Gallifrey, but they couldn't be sure if their plan had succeeded. The painting of Gallifrey mid-battle appeared destructive and hopeless. Its two titles ('No More' and 'Gallifrey Falls') didn't seem optimistic.

The curator, however, revealed the painting's true name: 'Gallifrey Falls No More'. The Doctor left the National Gallery with a new hope of finding his home planet.
10. 'The Day of the Doctor' was shown in 3D in some cinemas at the same time as it was broadcast on television.

Answer: True

The anniversary special achieved a Guiness World Record for the largest simulcast. It was shown on television and/or in cinemas in 94 countries simultaneously. The cinema version of the episode had a short introduction, which featured the three actors playing the Doctor, and Dan Starkey as Strax.
