Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dismissed after being found in bed with a guest

Answer: Jimmy

Before coming to work at Downton, Jimmy worked for Lady Anstruther and carried on a flirtation with her. She evidently started missing Jimmy and sent him letters saying she wanted to see him. He didn't respond and in the first episode of season 5, Lady Anstruther got herself invited to Downton Abbey for a night in order to persuade Jimmy to be with her.

He snuck into her room late at night but unfortunately was discovered when a fire broke out and Lord Grantham himself burst into the room to tell the occupants about the fire. Lord Grantham told Carson that Jimmy would be better employed elsewhere and Jimmy left at the beginning of the next episode.
2. Left to become a secretary

Answer: Gwen

Gwen was a housemaid in season 1, who revealed her desire to leave service and become a secretary. Lady Sybil took it upon herself to help Gwen find job advertisements and get to interviews. Sybil got Gwen an interview with the man who came to Downton to install the telephones and Gwen got a job with the phone company. We saw Gwen again in season 6, now married to a school trustee and no longer a secretary, when she and her husband came to Downton to meet with Lady Rosamund, who was also on the board of trustees.
3. Got married and moved to America

Answer: Lady Rose

Lady Rose, daughter of Robert's first cousin, came to live at Downton in season four when her parents went on assignment to India. In season five, Rose met Atticus Aldridge and they married at the end of the season. He was transferred to America for his job and of course Rose went too. They returned for the series finale.
4. Snuck away in the night with no notice to take a new job

Answer: Miss O'Brien

At the very beginning of season four, Sarah O'Brien, Lady Grantham's longtime ladies' maid, ran off in the night to go to India with Lady Flintshire, Rose's mother. O'Brien had met Lady Flintshire at the end of season three when the family stayed with the Flintshires. Lady Flintshire was impressed with how O'Brien did hair and evidently offered her a job as her new maid in India, as her current maid wasn't keen to go.
5. Gave up his family's long time tenancy and moved away

Answer: Tim Drewe

Mr. Drewe was introduced in season four when he convinced Robert to let him keep his family's farm when his father died, as Tom and Mary initially wanted to end the tenancy and farm the land themselves. Mr. Drewe showed himself to be a reliable man, loyal to the Crawley family and Edith hatched a plan with him to have him and his wife take in Edith's illegitimate daughter, Marigold, so she could be nearby.

In season five, Edith ended up taking the child back and Mrs. Drewe was distraught. At the beginning of season six, with Mrs. Drewe still struggling and having taken the little girl from under Edith's nose at an event, the Drewes left their farm and moved away to start over fresh without Marigold.
6. Moved to America to take a new job

Answer: Ivy

Ivy worked in the kitchen with Mrs. Patmore and Daisy in season three and four. At the end of season four, Lady Grantham's American mother and brother came to visit. The brother, Mr. Levinson, really developed a taste for the food served by the Downton kitchen staff, and his valet really developed a liking for Daisy.

The valet tried to convince Daisy to come to New York to be Mr. Levinson's cook but Daisy didn't want to go. Ivy did though and she ended up taking the job.
7. Dismissed after mistreating Miss Sybbie

Answer: Nanny West

Nanny West was nanny to Sybbie and George at the beginning of season four. She got on Thomas' bad side and he went to Lady Grantham and told her that Nanny West mistreated the children and left them alone sometimes. Lady Grantham went to check on the situation in the nursery and overheard Nanny speaking harshly to Sybbie, calling her "chauffeur's daughter" and a "wicked little cross breed". Lady Grantham dismissed Nanny at once.
8. Dismissed for getting too friendly with a soldier

Answer: Ethel

Ethel was a housemaid in season two but dreamed of being more than a housemaid. The house was turned into a convalescent home during the war and Ethel took to flirting with the soldiers. One in particular was a Major Bryant and Mrs. Hughes caught them in bed together in the servants quarters.

She fired Ethel at once but Ethel came back to beg for Mrs. Hughes' help when she discovered she was pregnant.
9. Left to become a chef in London

Answer: Alfred

Alfred was hired as a footman at Downton in season three but really wanted to be a chef. He applied for a training program at the Ritz and was accepted. He was later offered a permanent position and left Downton. We didn't see Alfred again after the end of season four.
10. Dismissed for being too interested in Tom Branson

Answer: Edna

Edna was a housemaid at the end of season three who took a great interest in Tom, hoping to inspire him to love her and raise her above a maid. Mrs. Hughes fired her but agreed to give her a good reference at Tom's insistence. Edna came back in season four when she applied for the job as Cora's new ladies' maid and got the job thanks to the reference letter from Mrs. Hughes.

She pursued Tom even harder than before and slipped into his bedroom one night when he was feeling low and had had a lot to drink.

She later tried to pressure him into saying he'd marry her if she was pregnant but Mrs. Hughes called her bluff and fired her again.
