Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Miles O'Brien married his wife before his assignment to Deep Space 9.

Answer: True

Miles and Keiko were introduced by Data, and soon began a relationship. In the fourth season of "The Next Generation," they were married in a combined Irish/Japanese ceremony, with Data acting in the role of the father of the bride.

Their first child was born while they were still serving aboard the Enterprise-D, while their second child was born after moving to DS9.

Question by reedy
2. During the Federation-Cardassian War, prior to his service on the Enterprise-D, O'Brien led a successful attack on the Cardassians encamped at Barrica, who had destroyed a Federation colony on Setlik III. For this action, he became known as what?

Answer: The Hero of Setlik III

Setlik III was the site of a Federation colony, which the Cardassians attacked during the war, massacring over 100 inhabitants. The USS Rutledge, the ship that O'Brien was serving on, was the first to respond to the situation. After his successful assault on the Cardassian encampment, O'Brien also rescued a number of survivors from the planet's surface while in combat.

Question by reedy
3. When O'Brien was assigned to the Enterprise-D under Captain Picard, what was his rank?

Answer: Chief petty officer

Chief petty officer is the highest rank that a non-commissioned member of Starfleet can achieve. Prior to his assignment to the Enterprise-D, O'Brien had already served on half a dozen starships, having served 18 years. One note - he was in "Encounter at Farpoint" as an un-named character with the rank of ensign.

Question by reedy
4. By the end of "DS9's" run, Miles O'Brien had two children. What were they called?

Answer: Molly & Kirayoshi

Keiko was Miles O'Brien's wife and the mother of his two children, Molly, who was born whilst he served on the Enterprise-D. Kirayoshi had to be transferred to Kira after an accident aboard a runabout in which Keiko was injured.

The second plotline was written as Nana Visitor, who played Major Kira, was pregnant at the time.

Question by Daddy19
5. Not long after being assigned to Deep Space 9, Miles helped an alien known as Tosk, the first visitor through the wormhole, escape capture by a race known as the Hunters. What did he get reprimanded for by Commander Sisko?

Answer: Violating the Prime Directive

The Prime Directive forbids Starfleet officers from interfering with the social order of any planet. This was applicable with Tosk because the Tosk species had been bred and engineered to be prey for the race known as the Hunters. 'Tosk' actually translated as 'The Hunted. Without the genetic tampering by the Hunters, the Tosk species would not even have been sentient.

Question by reedy
6. This question has to do with the mirror universe Miles O'Brien as seen in a couple episodes of "DS9." Which of the following was NOT TRUE about the mirror universe Miles O'Brien?

Answer: He became leader of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance during Terran rebellion.

Actually in the mirror universe, O'Brien (aka Smiley) became the leader of the Terran Rebellion after the mirror universe Sisko was killed. He had been a Terran slave in the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance on Terok Nor working in the ore processing center and doing other repairs. Eventually he joined the mirror universe Sisko as part of his crew when Sisko broke with the Alliance and eventually formed the Terran Resistance Forces ("DS9: Crossover").

It was while the mirror O'Brien was a slave on Terok Nor for the Alliance he used to do repair work on the mirror Sisko's raider ship. And this Sisko hated his first name, Miles, so called him Smiley.

After the mirror Sisko was killed, the mirror O'Brien went to Deep Space 9 and persuaded the Sisko there to come to the mirror universe pretending to be his deceased mirror self on an important mission for the Terran Resistance Forces ("DS9: Through the Looking Glass").

It was while the mirror O'Brien was on Deep Space 9 to get Sisko, he stole plans for the USS Defiant which was used the following year to commandeer Terok Nor from the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance ("DS9: Shattered Mirror").

Question by christi-dove
7. Miles O'Brien and _____ _____, after a rocky start, became best friends on Deep Space 9. Fill in the blank with the first and last name only of the character who was his best friend.

Answer: Julian Bashir

As most fans of "Star Trek: DS9" know Miles O'Brien was best friends with Julian Bashir. Though in the beginning O'Brien thought Bashir was annoying because he talked so much they became the best of friends. The beginning of their friendship really could be seen in the episode "Armageddon Game" when they were both targets alien government assassins who wanted to destroy any knowledge of the biological weapons both men had helped eliminate.

Miles and Julian did many activities together such as playing darts, racquetball, and using the holosuites for reenactments of famous historical battles.

Question by christi_dove
8. Miles O'Brien served on the Enterprise-D before transferring to Deep Space Nine. What was his function, job, on the Enterprise?

Answer: Transporter Chief

On the Enterpise-D he was always tinkering in his Transporter Room. At his transfer from the Enterprise-D to DS9 He was sent off by Captain Picard in person at the controls of the transporter.

Question by Joannesgeurts
9. Another accident involving an emergency beam-out from a damaged runabout resulted in O'Brien's physical parameters being stored in the holodeck system whilst Julian was running his spy program. Which role in the story did O'Brien play?

Answer: Falcon

Captain Sisko had the role of the evil mastermind, Doctor Noah. Major Kira was Colonel Anastasia Komananov and Worf played Duchamps. O'Brien played the mercenary Falcon, who Bashir shot with a champagne cork to get away from him.

Inside the holodeck, Bashir and Garak had to try and prevent any of the senior staff from being killed whilst Eddington, Odo, Quark and Rom tried to work out how to save them.

Question by Daddy19
10. Despite being in a committed marriage, O'Brien developed an attraction to another female stationed on Deep Space 9.

Answer: True

Don't worry he remained faithful to his wife and family. When Keiko, O'Brien's wife was pregnant with their second child, she was in a runabout accident and to save her baby's life, he was given to Kira Nerys to carry to term inside her ("DS9: Body Parts"). Kira moved in with the O'Brien's and Miles helped her through her pregnancy with massages, herbs, and other techniques which caused them to spend a lot of time together and they grew very close but when it became apparent they had both developed feelings for each other they resisted and decided to avoid any romantic settings ("Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places").

Question by christi_dove
11. While on the Enterprise-D, O'Brien was part of a recreational string quartet. Which part did he play?

Answer: Cello

When Jake Sisko talked to Miles about not wanting to go to Starfleet Academy, which his father wanted him to do, Miles recounted his own similar story: When much younger, his father had strongly encouraged Miles' musical talents, even sending an audition recording to a prestigious music academy, with the result that Miles was accepted. He didn't want to be a professional musician, however, and two days before he was supposed to leave to go to the academy, Miles signed up for Starfleet instead.

Question by reedy
12. In the episode "Explorers", O'Brien and Bashir get drunk when Bashir is ignored by his former classmate, Dr. Elizabeth Lense. She ignored him on a visit to the station. Which song do they sing together?

Answer: Jerusalem

"Row, Row, Row Your Boat" was sung in "Star Trek V". Scotty played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes at Spock's funeral in "Star Trek II". The Doctor promised to sing "Danny Boy" in the "Voyager" episode "Fair Haven", but we didn't see him do it.

Elizabeth Lense finished first in their class and Bashir finished second. She ignored him as she didn't recognise him, thinking that Bashir was Bolian. As a result, Miles and Julian got drunk together!

Question by Daddy19
13. In the fourth season episode "To the Death" we learned that O'Brien had a custom of recording a 'goodbye' message for his family every time he went into battle, just in case he didn't come back. At the time of this episode, how many had he recorded (between the years 2367 and 2372)?

Answer: Eleven

O'Brien, of course, married Keiko in the year 2367. Prior to that, there had been no need for such a ritual. In this episode, a strike force had been ordered to Vandros IV where the Jem'Hadar had captured a device potentially capable of teleporting people instantaneously to any world in the Galaxy (an ancient Iconian device). Prior to their departure, O'Brien explained to Dax that the message he was recording for his family was the eleventh such that he had done, and that each time he recorded one, he feared that it would be the one that they would hear.

Question by reedy
14. The character of Miles O'Brien was rarely put into dangerous situations or subjected to major hardships on "Star Trek: Deep Space 9."

Answer: False

This is false because Miles O'Brien was often in dangerous situations in "Deep Space Nine." According to the "Memory Apha" article "Miles O'Brien," the writing staff for the series made a point of making his character suffer in some terrible way a couple times each season. He represented an "Everyman" character most people can relate to and feel sympathy for. Lets look at a few examples of this.

In the episode "Tribunal" Miles O'Brien was arrested by the Cardassians on a manufactured charge that he was really part of the Maquis resistance movement. On Cardassia Prime trials are mainly mock trials, the outcome of death already predetermined and broadcast to its citizens. Miles was tortured during his interrogation and endured great humiliation. This episode can be disturbing to watch but is a very powerful one.

In the episode "Hard Time" O'Brien was mistakenly accused of being a spy on planet Argratha in the Gamma Quadrant. He was sentenced to twenty years in prison but what was so unusual about their prison sentences was they were carried out in just a few hours! They accomplished this by using mind control techniques and technology to implant false memories so to the prisoner it really does seem like twenty years was really lived in those few hours. This also is another very disturbing and powerful episode and the memories of his time in prison so profoundly negatively affected Miles he almost took his own life even after he found out what really happened to him but was topped by Julian Bashir.

In the episode "Visionary," O'Brien got radiation poisoning and began to experience "timeshifts" into the future. During these jumps into the future he saw himself fatally wounded from an energy blast from a panel in the habitat ring; in another he found his dead body in the infirmary due to unknown complications from the radiation poisoning which damaged arteries in his brainstem; he also witnessed Deep Space 9 destroyed in an explosion.

Question by christi_dove
15. What post did O'Brien say he was going to have at the end of the Dominion War?

Answer: Professor of Engineering at Starfleet Academy

Chief of Operations was his title for the entire run of "DS9". Prior to serving on the Enterprise-D, he was a member of the USS Rutledge's crew although not Chief Engineer. In fact, he tells us that he is moving with his family back to Earth to work for Starfleet, however it took him a long time to pluck up the courage to tell his best friend, Julian.
