Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Angel fought the good fight against Mayor Wilkins and left for Los Angeles at the end of "Buffy's" third season. Which of the Scoobies was the first to see him again, in person?

Answer: Cordy

Giles didn't see Angel again until season four's Thanksgiving homage "Pangs". But, Cordy had long since left Sunnydale for Los Angeles, hoping to make it big. She met Angel at a show business party in the series premiere, while trying to get the attention of an agent named Oliver. Oliver was more interested in Angel, who at the time was trying to save a young woman named Tina. Tina was killed by a vampire named Russell Winters, who later tried to eat Cordelia. Angel and his new sidekick Doyle saved Cordy and team Angel was born.

Oz didn't see Angel until the third episode "In The Dark". He brought Angel the Gem of Amara on behalf of Buffy, who took it from our favorite bad boy Spike.
2. "Hi ho, hi ho, it's to and fro we go" could be the theme of all BUT one of these "Buffyverse" characters. Which NEVER made it to Los Angeles to see team Angel?

Answer: Xander

Xander saw Angel once in the episode "Pangs", but did not encounter him at the end of season four ("The Yoko Factor"), in mid season five ("Forever"), or at the end of season seven when Angel came back to Sunnydale. Xander never made it to LA, but these did- Oz, Wesley, Faith, Darla, Willow, Spike and Drusilla.

Faith and Darla made a huge impact on the series "Angel", each second only to Cordelia and Wes. Buffy had two visits to Los Angeles in the series' first season, but only saw her true love afterward when he returned to Sunnydale.
3. Which Sunnydale alum had a sordid affair with one of the evil from Wolfram & Hart?

Answer: Wesley

While I am sure Angelus entertained a fantasy or two about violating Lilah Morgan, it was Wesley who actually spent several months with her in season four. In the end, though neither would ever admit it, they did appear to care for each other in their own ways. Lilah, who professed incessantly to being evil, told Wes she didn't have it in her to love him, but I think she was trying to convince herself of that. Wes proved he did care for her when he agonized over decapitating her to prevent her from becoming a vampire, and again when he tried to destroy her perpetuity contract in "Home".
4. "Take a hike Spike" may have been Buffy's line from seasons two through five, but she did invite him into her home more than once.

Answer: True

She first invited him in at the end of season two. Spike came to her for help extricating Drusilla from Angelus. Buffy found the idea comical, calling Dru a "big ho" in the process, but made a pact with Spike anyway. Joyce found out that Buffy was a slayer for the third time in this episode, and this time the news finally sunk it. Spike was de-invited ages later, in season five's "Crush", and then she allowed him back inside at the end of the season in "The Gift".

Joyce finding out about Buffy time line is as follows- 1) Buffy mentioned it in season one's "The Witch". 2) Buffy makes it clear to her at the end of season two. 3) We find out that Joyce and Hank were both told in the pre-Sunnydale time-space during season six's "Normal Again". That makes season two the third time she found out and the actual time she believed it. She, of course, did not want to accept it, which was one catalyst for Buffy leaving Sunnydale for Los Angeles at the end of season two.
5. Which of these Darla factoids is really a falsehood?

Answer: Darla killed Joyce Summers

Darla fed from Joyce in season one of "Buffy". She wanted Buffy to think that Angel did it, so Buffy and Angel would fight to the death. Angel was made to look more guilty when he was found by Buffy holding Joyce's bleeding body. In the end, the gang sussed out the truth and warned Buffy of the real culprit.

Darla timeline- 1) Darla, a dying prostitute, is sired in 1609 by the Master and becomes part of his Order of Aurelius. 2) Darla sires Angelus (Liam) in 1753. 3) After rejecting the order, Angelus and Darla encur the wrath of Daniel Holtz. Holtz does not get his revenge for 200 years. 4) Darla gifts Angelus with a Gypsy girl in 1898, causing him to be cursed with a soul. Darla is disgusted and rejects him, though it is her fault. She reconnects with him briefly during the Boxer Rebellion, at which time Spike kills his first slayer. They part again and Angel heads to America in 1902. 5) Darla arrives in Sunnydale in 1997 (or sooner) to help the Master be freed of his sunken church prison. 6) Darla kills Xander and Willow's school chum Jesse, turning him into a vampire. Xander later dusts him. 7) Angel kills Darla in the Bronze in the episode "Angel". 8) Wolfram & Hart bring Darla back at the end of "Angel" season one. 9) Darla is revamped by Drusilla in season two. 10) Angel tries to kill both Darla and Dru by fire. 11) Angel beds Darla in a moment of true despair and conceives Connor. 12) Darla kills herself to birth Connor in the alley behind Caritas. 13) Darla appears to Connor in season four to try and save him from the yet to be born Jasmine. But, it could have been The First trying to keep Jasmine from ruining its plans for world reign evil.
6. Oz traveled to Los Angeles just once in order to give Angel the Gem of Amara. What happened to that stone at the end of "In the Dark"?

Answer: Angel smashed it

Oz was heading to LA to perform a gig with Dingoes Ate My Baby, so he told Buffy he'd pass the stone on to Angel. As always happened, chaos ensued with Spike's quest to regain the gem. He hired a vampire to torture Angel, which prompted Doyle and Cordy to bring the gem to Spike. Oz used his van to snatch up Angel and they chased down the Gem, being worn by the torturer Marcus. Doyle was shocked when Angel chose to destroy the stone, but Angel felt it was too powerful to be kept.
7. Wesley arrived in Sunnydale to replace Giles as the local watcher. During his stint on the Hellmouth Wesley could be described as flighty, soft spoken, nervous, inexperienced, and enamored with Cordelia. How did Wes describe himself to Angel and Cordy when he first arrived in Los Angeles?

Answer: as a rogue demon hunter

Alexis Denisof joined the cast in season one of "Angel". After Doyle sacrificed himself and passed the visions on to Cordy, team Angel was in limited supply. Wesley arrived in town in "Parting Gifts" hunting a Kungai demon, who itself was hunting Barney. Barney was a greasy little empath demon who liked to sell pilfered goods at auction. When he realized Cordy was a seer, he auctioned her off to Wolfram and Hart. Angel and Wes saved Cordy, and Wes became a member of the team. Wes lead folks to believe he quit the council, but he was actually fired after his failings as a Watcher.

Alexis married "Buffyverse" co-star Alyson Hannigan in 2003. Alexis was born in Maryland in 1966 and is eight years older than Alyson.
8. "It's Your Life Harmony!" The only other "Cordette" to make a name for herself in both Sunnydale and Los Angeles, Harmony Kendall was a simple creature given to listening to her baser instincts. Which of the following statements was first on Harmony's time line of life and death?

Answer: Sunnydale- Harmony bit Willow outside of the Bronze

Here is a bit of Harmony's lifespan, in chronological order- dimwitted Harmony followed Cordelia Chase like a lapdog for most of season one, though she wasn't seen very often; Harmony was attacked by Marcie Ross in season one due to her association with Cordy; in season two Harmony broke off from Cordy with the other Cordettes, as they were all ashamed of Cordy's romance with Xander Harris; Harmony was not seen again until season three's "The Wish" when she introduced Anyanka to Cordy; she joined forces with the graduating class at the end of season three to fight against the mayor snake, but was bitten by a vamp and presumed dead; in season four she appeared out of nowhere to say hello to Willow and we can assume she wanted to show off her new vampire life; she helped Spike locate the Gem of Amara, to which her lover staked her in aggravation; she continued to have an on/off relationship with Spike in seasons four and five of "Buffy", and tried to become more independent by forming her own gang; Harmony finally "got a clue" mid season five when Spike tried to win over Buffy with the offer to kill Drusilla, so she headed to Los Angeles and met up with Cordy; after being welcomed in by Cordy, Harmony turned the entirety of team Angel over to a vampire pyramid scheme; she remained off screen until the fifth season of "Angel", where she became Angel's inept secretary at Wolfram & Hart. She was reunited with Spike, but couldn't consummate that until he was made corporeal again later in that season. Harmony betrayed her team a final time when had an affair with Hamilton, but this time Angel was counting on it.

Mercedes McNab offered fans a highly entertaining portrayal of the selfish nitwit Harmony, especially in the scene where she and Xander got into a hair pulling fight on the university campus!
9. Buffy made two trips to Los Angeles after Angel left Sunnydale. One of those was a day she'll never remember, and one was to warn Angel about Faith. Did both of these trips occur in the same season?

Answer: Yes

It was season four of "Buffy" and season one of "Angel" that she made her way to LA. On her first trip, Angel became human again and they reunited. Angel realized as human he would be a liability to her, and asked the Oracles to turn back the day. They did so, and he was the only one left with their memories.

He eventually told Doyle, who told Cordy, but Buffy never knew. I am not sure why he truly thought it was a big deal, Buffy was forever saving her Scoobies from danger in Sunnydale. I think Angel disliked feeling vulnerable, and knew he had more good to do with super strength. Either way, holding on to that perfect feeling alone made Buffy's second trip a bit too abrasive for Angel.

She didn't understand his need to help Faith, and the pair beat on each other a bit. Buffy never came back to L.A., but did meet Angel somewhere in between after she returned from the dead in season six of her series.
10. Envy may have been a better name for our second season three slayer Faith. Faith became a slayer after the death of Kendra, but her troubled past led her down an opposing path from Buffy. Which of these men did Faith NOT have a sexual experience with?

Answer: Spike

Yes, season three bought forth a second slayer, played beautifully by Boston native Eliza Dushku. Eliza was seventeen when she first played Faith. Faith was the polar opposite of Buffy Summers. She was from Boston, raised by an abusive alcoholic mother and witnessed her watcher viciously murdered by the ancient vamp Kakistos. Faith tried to win over the Scooby gang, but she was emotionally stunted by her life experience and came across as trying to steal Buffy's life instead. When, by omission and not malice, Faith was shut out of the inner circle, she slowly started to given in to her darker side. She even tried to bring Buffy over with her, but the accidental staking of Alan Finch snapped Buffy back and crossed Faith completely over. She killed the mayor's lackey, Mr. Trick, and then applied for his position in person. Mayor Wilkins, despite being evil, came to care for Faith as though she were his own daughter. After being stuck in the gut by Buffy, Faith spent eight months in a coma. She came to and performed a body switch with Buffy, and used Buffy's body to seduce Riley. It was in season seven that she returned to Sunnydale, after a couple of years in prison, to fight against the First. While there she had a one night encounter with Principal Wood. Inside Buffy's body she propositioned Spike in an extremely suggestive way, but she didn't seduce him because "it's wrong".

Faith's last name became Lehane in 2005, when Joss surnamed her for marketing purposes.
11. "Who Ya Gonna Call?" There were a few telephone calls between Sunnydale and Los Angeles in twelve great seasons. Which phone call scenario NEVER happened, on or off screen?

Answer: Connor called Dawn to warn them all about Angelus

While I have read my fair amount of fanfic about a relationship between Connor and Dawn, as far as the audience ever knew he did not know who she was. Connor barely had any back story on Angel at all, because when he returned from Quor'toth he only felt hate for his father. Angel called Buffy at her home in the first episode of his series, and it was also the season four premiere of "BtVS". He listened to her voice and then hung up, and she only came home because of that crazy vamp Sunday. Maybe that was fate as well?
Angelus called Sunnydale, and Dawn answered the phone, in order to find out which slayer he was dealing with in season four. It was Faith, back to save Angel from Angelus. Fred made an off screen call to Willow, but the call was seen on screen on "Buffy". What surprised me a bit was that Willow did not sense Cordy's evilness while she was there. Not only did she and Tara sense Faith lurking in Buffy's body, but her own stint being evil had made her hyper aware of it in season seven.

Spike mentioned in season seven that "who ya gonna call" was never going to be usable again. That line was a calling card from the 1984 film "Ghostbusters".
12. Doyle prompted Angel to make his first return to Sunnydale with a vision showing Buffy in danger. Angel spent all of "Pangs" hiding out from Buffy, but who finally gave him up at the very end of that episode?

Answer: Xander

Giles told Angel it wasn't fair for him to see Buffy and not allow her to see him. Angel felt his presence would cause her more trouble than the lie, so he helped by aiding the rest of the gang to defeat Hus. Buffy spent the episode in the ambiguity that is Thanksgiving, but finally had her much needed sit down dinner at the end. Everyone was there, including a bound Spike, and when the comment was made how much like the old days it was, Xander said "yeah, especially with Angel being back and everything".

The episode closed with the camera view being Buffy's perspective viewing all of the different looks of her dinner mates. This revelation of Xander's prompted Buffy to visit Angel in LA, despite her explanation of it being a visit to her father.
13. Cordy was with Angel from the beginning and never returned to Sunnydale. But, which of these events was Cordy NOT there to see?

Answer: All of these

Fred was the one with Angel and Darla in that alley behind Caritas. She was the one who witnessed Darla stake herself and leave baby Connor behind. Cordy was on vacation with Groo when Wesley gave in to fear and kidnapped the baby, later getting his throat cut and having Justine take Connor to Holtz. And lastly, Cordy died five episodes before Fred. That was in episode 100 "You're Welcome", and Illyria took Fred in "Shells".
14. Willow traveled to LA twice, once to ensoul Angelus and previously to tell Angel that Buffy had died.

Answer: True

Willow was waiting on the gang when they returned from Pylea at the end of season two. She came back at Fred's request to ensoul Angelus once again. She seemed to be attracted to Fred, but when Fred asked too many questions she said "I have a girlfriend". I could see it puzzled Fred, as only Cordy knew she was gay. Cordy found out in "Disharmony", when she called Willow and found out Harmony had become a vampire. As she and Faith were leaving to head back to Sunnydale, she told the gang to call her the next time they wanted to bring back Angelus.

She mentioned that ensouling him was the first spell she ever learned, but that is not true. The first spell she performed was the de-invite spell. She took away Angel's invite in "Passions", which prompted Angelus to go off the deep end.

He killed Jenny Calendar in that episode to prevent the restoration spell from being completed.
15. William "the bloody" fancied himself to be a good man, if not a good poet. Spike, on the other hand, offered quite an entertaining stream of dialogue. All of these quotes are about Angel, but which one was NOT SPOKEN by Spike at all?

Answer: Mr. Billowy Coat King of Pain

It was Riley Finn who, showing his insecurities, described Angel this way in "The Yoko Factor". This was the only encounter between the men, brought on by Angel's desire to aplogize to Buffy about their last encounter and Riley's unease about Angel's trigger. Thanks to a short story by one Xander Harris, Riley thought that Angel was bad again.

Thanks for indulging this "Buffyverse" addict in yet another homage to that world. I leave you now with some more humorous remarks about Angel.

Spike- "mysterious, black-clad hunk of a night thing"
Cordy- "pig-drinking bloodsucker"
Connor- "the prince of lies"
Gunn- "Vampire Moriarty"
Darla- "whiny mopey do-gooder"
Lorne- "Mr. Tall Dark and Rockin'"
Lilah- "gloomy avenger"
Sebassis- "resltless frog"
Anne- "psychotic borderline schizophrenic vampire"
Lastly and most accurate of all:
"A great and noble warrior" said by Lorne's cousin Landok.
