Daenerys Targaryen of House Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) leads her Dothraki across the desert, her precious dragons still small. She gains entry to the city of Qarth calling herself Mother of Dragons, the Unburnt, expecting they will help her take back the Iron Throne that was stolen from her father.
They give her sanctuary because of her dragons, but refuse her the ships and army she seeks. Then the warlocks steal her dragons. Emilia Clarke plays one of the most popular "Game of Thrones" characters. "The Iron Throne is mine and I will take it! With fire and blood!"
2. Mance Rayder
Answer: King-beyond-the-Wall
Mance Rayder (Ciaran Hinds) is mentioned often but not seen in season 2. The men of the Night's Watch go beyond the wall of ice to find out what happened to a party of rangers, and why the Wildlings who live in the cold are gathering, led by Mance, their King-beyond-the-Wall. We learn that Mance was once a Crow, sworn to the Night's Watch, but for more than ten years he's led the Wildlings, and now he's pulling together all clans, teaching them to fight and organize.
It looks like he's planning to attack the wall and lead his thousands south. Why? Word is, there's something frightening that drives the Wildlings south. Something terrible. Though few believe that tale.
3. Renly Baratheon
Answer: Best his brother
Younger brother to both Stannis and the recently deceased King Robert, Renly (Gethin Anthony) is young for war, but a good man. He has formed an army to take the Iron Throne, and was just speaking with Catelyn Stark about an alliance with Robb Stark, House of Winterfell, when a demon shadow in the shape of a man murders him.
There's one less claim on the throne, and Renly's army will now join Stannis. Catelyn is again delayed from getting home to her children and now it's too late, Winterfell is seized.
4. Margaery Tyrell
Answer: THE Queen by marriage
Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) was married with Renly Baratheon, a gay aristocrat and a fine leader. When he is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Margaret must reassess how to play the game. Asked if she wants to be queen, she says, "No. I want to be THE queen". Which means she needs a plot to marry whichever man sits upon the Iron Throne.
5. Joffrey Baratheon
Answer: Remain Sitting King
The golden-haired and sadistic Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson) is now openly said to be the product of incest. He's a Lannister, not King Robert's son. Yet due to scheming on the part of his mother Cersei (Lena Headey) Joffrey is the sitting King of Westeros.
He's still betrothed to Sansa Stark, both of them nearly killed when starving crowds attack the royal family. Joffrey no longer pretends affection for Sansa, who has realized he's a vicious, cowardly monster. Joffrey as king is out of control, restrained only by his uncle Tyrion.
6. Robb Stark
Answer: King of the North
Robb Stark of House Winterfell (Richard Madden) is the eldest son of Eddard "Ned" Stark, Hand of the King, executed by the Lannisters. Wishing to avenge his father, oust the Lannisters and promote his chosen king--Renly Baratheon--Robb "calls his banners" and forms a successful army, who declare him King of the North. To gain advantage he agrees to marry one of the daughters of House Frey, but then he falls in love with someone else, despite his mother's warnings.
In season 2 directors Benioff and Weiss stick very close to the George R.R. Martin novels the show is based upon.
7. Stannis Baratheon
Answer: Azor Ahai reborn
Stannis Baratheon is the eldest Baratheon, now that his brother King Robert the Usurper is dead. His claim to rule the seven kingdoms is the "true" claim, by blood and tradition. Stannis is considered a man of honor, skilled in battle, but he is humorless and bitter, and not well liked.
This encourages his brother Renly to make a claim for the throne. Stannis seeks the help of the Red Priestess, who believes him to be the reborn king of prophecy, Azor Ahai, the choice of the Lord of Light. She convinces Stannis he is chosen, and that he will win the "clash of kings".
She manipulates the game, and him. It seems now he will do anything to sit on the Iron Throne.
8. Theon Greyjoy
Answer: Capture Winterfell
Theon Greyjoy grew up in the Stark household of Winterfell, after his brothers were killed and his father Balon defeated. Robb Stark sends Theon to enlist the allegiance of his father and the Iron Islands, but instead they scorn and belittle Theon. They are pledged to his sister Yara.
Theon, determined to become Prince, to make his father accept him, seizes the Stark castle at Winterfell. He demands to be called Lord of Winterfell, and murders some he's known since he was a boy. "Gods help you, Theon".
9. Brienne of Tarth
Answer: Kings Guard
Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) is a tall, powerful woman with the skills of a knight. She kneels before King Renly, asking to serve and protect him in the elite Kings Guard. To everyone's shock he allows it, but soon he is murdered by a shadow. Brienne blames his brother Stannis, and vows to avenge him. Meanwhile, on bended knee again, she pledges to guard Lady Catelyn Stark, a strong ally of Renly and someone Brienne admires for her courage. Huge and homely, but amazing with a sword, Brienne wants only a chance to defend the worthy. Actress Christie is 6'3", and a gorgeous English model.
Initially directors feared she might be too pretty to play Brienne.
10. Tyrion Lannister
Answer: Hand of the King
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), "the imp", is the youngest son of Tywinn (Charles Dance), and uncle to the sadist King Joffrey. Tyrion is the scapegoat of the family and until now, just a drunken lecher. He begins to realize he has a place in his powerful, scheming family, and that he has Lannister tactical wit and skill, too.
While his father is out at war, and his nephew is King, Tyrion makes the most of his temporary but influential position as Hand of the King. War is coming to the gates of King's Landing, and his family may need him, for once.
