Lysa Arryn, Catelyn's sister, lived at Riverrun when she was unmarried but left upon her marriage to the much older Hand of the King, Jon Arryn. Lysa Arryn then took up residence in King's Landing but after he was killed by the Lannister family, Lysa took her son and moved back to her husband's ancestral seat of The Vale.

Catelyn and her party are shocked when they arrive at the Vale to find that Lysa still breastfeeds her son, who is long past being a toddler, and mollycoddles him. On account of Robin's ill health, Lysa is fiercely protective of the child, whereas Jon Arryn, had he lived, wished to foster the boy with another house in Westeros, as custom dictates, as Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon had been sent to Jon Arryn to be fostered.
