Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Season four of "The West Wing" started off with a double episode replete with very funny moments. Where did Toby, Donna and Josh get stranded, when left behind by the motorcade?

Answer: Rural Indiana

They were meeting with farmers out in a field as the motorcade departed. This started a long slog to get back to Washington, unsupported by government transportation.
2. In the season four premiere of "The West Wing", Josh, Toby, and Donna, after being left behind by the motorcade, got a ride to the next town in a soy-diesel vehicle. They didn't make it to their destination. Why?

Answer: They ran out of diesel fuel.

The vehicle's owner was undismayed and just said they'd get some diesel back at the farm. Josh was incredulous looking around at unending crop fields- "Somebody's going to pick you up out here?" As the words left his mouth, a pickup came along whose driver offered them a ride to the farm to get some diesel.
3. In the season four premiere of "the West Wing", while trying to get back to Washington, Josh, Donna and Toby awaited a ride in the parking lot of a small store. Josh and Toby competed to see who could throw pebbles into a barrel. What did the first person to miss the barrel have to say, when introducing himself, for the rest of the day?

Answer: "I work at the White House."

Toby, who was already having a high-stress day worrying about how the president was delivering the speech Toby had written, missed first. And he kept his word, to his detriment, for the rest of the day. One young person said to him, "You know, people would like you more if you didn't say that all the time."
4. In the fourth season of "The West Wing", a young Bartlet volunteer gave Josh, Donna, and Toby a ride to an airport to help them on their journey back to D.C. Along the way he stopped upon meeting his former girlfriend and her friends. What unsettling information did the girls impart to our travelers?

Answer: They'd missed their plane because they changed time zones.

The state they were in had time zones that changed by county, and no one realized it in making departure plans. This news caused Josh and Toby to unspool for an interval, including emitting some unseemly utterances and hitting a guardrail with a stick.
5. In "The West Wing" season four premiere, another glitch in the long trek back to Washington for Toby, Donna, and Josh was when what form of transportation went astray?

Answer: Train

The young volunteer, Tyler (played by John Gallagher, Jr., who later was a regular on "The Newsroom" as Jim Harper), pointed down the track and promised the train would take them to their destination--as the train slowly began to move off in the opposite direction...
6. In the fourth season of "The West Wing", what did Abbey do to energize the president just before he walked out to the debate stage?

Answer: Cut his tie off

There had been quite a bit of back-and-forth about the President's lucky tie, that he'd borrowed from Josh in the debate during his first Presidential campaign. He wanted to wear it again, but unbeknownst to the President, that tie had been damaged at the cleaner; Charlie put off as long as possible 'fessing up that it was no longer available.

The President made light of it when he learned the truth, but he brought it up to Abbey at the last minute before taking the stage. Her arch response was that there was probably no point in going forward with the debate without it, and The President said there'd been a "lot of juice" in that tie.

Then, she said she felt bad that she hadn't done enough to help him get ready, and she clipped off his tie in one quick motion.

The President took off yelling for Charlie, and as he approached the stage, Josh removed his own tie and gave it to President Bartlet. Definitely energized!
7. On election day in the fourth season, who/what does Toby enlist to play a prank on Josh?

Answer: An acting troupe

As payback for an earlier prank the senior team had played on him, Toby arranged for several actors to strike up conversations with Josh on election day, with each actor describing how they voted-and each one recounting a method of voting that invalidated his or her ballot or did not reflect the voter's wishes (for instance, one person said, "If you vote just for the top of the ticket, you automatically vote for all from that party.") As he talked with each actor and realized they'd all voted in such a way as to not help the president, you could almost see the steam coming out of Josh's ears.
8. Maybe he should have thought twice! What did Josh advise the first lady to do, that resulted in an uncomfortable situation for him, in season four of "The West Wing"?

Answer: Put a professional face on her staff

The first lady complained to Josh that her issues weren't being taken seriously, and he dismissively said it was because she had her nephew in charge of promoting them. He advised her to someone more professional in that role. A short time later Josh' office got a fax from Amy Gardner informing him that the First Lady had taken his advice and she now was leading the first lady's staff. Josh and Amy had a rather intense personal history, and she was quite a fighter for women's issues, so this was not good news for him.
9. Is it true that in "The West Wing" season four Sam got caught in a rash promise to leave the White House to work at his father's law firm after the election?

Answer: No

Horton Wilde was a Democrat who died before the election while on the ballot in Orange County, California. Sam made a promise to the widow to run in a special election if the deceased Democrat won the election. The chances of such a win were calculated to be infinitesimally small given the ultra-conservative makeup of the district, but (as Sam said) "in an Aristotelian confluence of events that could only happen to me", Wilde won and Sam was on the hook to keep his promise. Once this news came out, Sam was the target of lots of ribbing from his fellow staffers, who nevertheless concluded that he should, in fact, go out to California and run.
10. In the fourth season of "The West Wing", who or what caused CJ to completely lose her composure in a meeting, so that she had to step away?

Answer: A member of the D.A.R.

The White House was hosting the Daughters of the American Revolution at a White House reception. One member, Marion Coatsworth-Hay of Marblehead, Massachusetts, called The Boston Globe before the event to voice her concern that Abigail Bartlet, also a member, had a qualifying ancestor who had been a pirate and Ms. Bartlet therefore should not have been admitted to the DAR. CJ, Will and newly-hired Amy Gardner were deputized to speak with Mrs. Coatsworth-Hay about this matter, which they personally considered somewhat silly. Ms. Coatsworth-Hay, although no doubt a formidable matron, had a uniquely grating voice and manner of expression, which apparently got to CJ, because she burst into uncontrollable laughter a minute into the meeting and could no longer take part in it.

She huddled in a corner of the room, shoulders shaking, while Amy dealt with Mrs. Coatsworth-hay.
