Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was the first year "Judge Judy" appeared on television?

Answer: 1996

Judith Sheindlin started out in the Family Court and earned a reputation of being a tough, yet fair, judge. She often handled divorces and custody hearings. When word spread about her ways of getting to the truth, she was given a television show of her own.
2. Which of the following shows helped give Judy national recognition?

Answer: 60 Minutes

The producers of "60 Minutes" heard about the way Judy ran her courtroom and decided to give her a segment on their show. Her reputation grew when audiences actually got to see the way she judged. Soon after, she was offered her own show.
3. Of the following people, who has been her bailiff?

Answer: Petri Hawkins-Byrd

Regler and Douthit are her executive producers. Bishop does the announcing for the show. The real bailiff is Petri Hawkins-Byrd, and his job is to call the court to order and swear people in. At times, he is also in charge of keeping tempers down, and even checking the value on used cars for Judy to make a ruling.
4. What is the maximum amount people can sue for on her show?

Answer: $5,000

Because she runs only a small-claims court, the maximum amount a plaintiff can sue the defendant is $5,000. Often times the plaintiff's claim is actually more than that, but it's impossible for them to sue beyond the $5,000. Sometimes Judge Judy tells people that they should have sued for more, like when pain and suffering are involved.
5. What was the original name of the show?

Answer: Hot Bench

"Hot Bench" was the name of the show originally, but Judge Judy didn't approve. Instead the show became "Judge Judy," and it made her the first television judge to have their name in the title of their own show. She continues to have the best ratings among other courtroom shows.
6. What was the name of the first "Judge Judy" DVD?

Answer: "Judge Judy: Justice Served"

The judge has actually released movies. They are each collections of some of her more memorable cases. The first DVD was called "Judge Judy: Justice Served" and it also featured a television program about her rise to fame. A second movie was released called "Judge Judy: Second to None."
7. Which of the following is NOT the name of one of her books?

Answer: That's Baloney: If It Doesn't Make Sense, It's Not True

While it's true she often cries "That's baloney," that is not one of the titles of her books. She has written several, including "Win or Lose By How You Choose," which was written for children. Other books of hers include "You're Smarter Than You Look" and "Keep it Simple, Stupid."
8. Of these seasons, which one earned her the highest ratings?

Answer: 4

If one should ever doubted Judy's popularity, then consider the fact that she actually beat the one and only Oprah during her fourth season (1999-2000)! More people watched "Judge Judy" than "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Because of her, different courtroom television shows were created and some even returned, like "Divorce Court."
9. Judy's husband was once a judge himself.

Answer: True

Judy has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Ronald Levy, who she divorced in 1976. After that, she met and married Jerry Sheindlin. The two married in 1977 but got divorced in 1990. Only one year later, Judy and Jerry remarried. Her husband is also a judge, and he even had his own courtroom show for a small time.
10. Which of the following is NOT true about the judge?

Answer: She once served as Senator of Florida

All of these are true except for the fact that she was never a Senator for Florida. She judged the pageant in 1999 and was listed by "Forbes" magazine as one of the richest women in the entertainment world, making millions a year. She was also on the National Board of Advisors for "Mothers Against Drunk Driving" (MADD).
