In much the style of a real telenovela or soap opera, season one would offer many twists and turns, and Michael would find himself deep into an investigation at a local hotel.

Dr. Luisa Alver was the sister of Rafael Solano, and also Jane's gynecologist. Jane was there for a regular yearly visit, and Rafael's wife Petra was there to be inseminated. Petra was having the insemination done without Rafael's consent, to try and save their marriage. He'd stored his sperm before undergoing cancer treatment, and this was his only chance to be father to his own biological offspring. Luisa was distraught from catching her girlfriend with another woman, and accidentally inseminated the wrong patient. Rafael and Luisa had the same father, but different mothers.

Yara Martinez played Luisa. She was also in "Alpha House", "True Detective", and "Southland". Yael Grobglas played Petra/Natalia Solano. She was also on the CW series "Reign".

Rogelio was the star of the most successful telenovela on air at the time. When he found out about Jane, he made them move the filming to Miami to be near her. He eventually was killed off the show, due to his demands. Jane's father was a tool, totally in love with himself, but not a cruel or hostile man in any way. He just happened to admire himself more than anyone else did. After Santos was killed off of "The Passions of Santos", Rogelio took a job with his fiercest rival so he could stay in Miami. He was eventually rehired to play Santos after the ratings began to fall.

Jaime Camil played Jane's dad.

Sin Rostro translated to "the man without a face". It turned out to be Rose, Rafael and Luisa's stepmother. Luisa was having an affair with Rose, who had made her acquaintance at an earlier date. It was hard to determine if Rose got involved with Luisa the first time just to get closer to her father Emilio, or if that was a coincidence. Either way, Rose married Emilio, owner of the The Marbella Hotel, so she could use it to open a new operation. She had a secret tunnel built to accommodate criminals coming to their surgery suites for reconstructive (identity changing) surgery. Rose also killed Emilio, but left Luisa a clue as to where the body was located. Nadine also turned out to be working for Sin Rostro, but she told Michael she'd been forced to do so.

Bridget Regan played Rose. She was also seen in "White Collar".

Roman was Rafael's best friend from college, and he was also having an affair with Petra. He killed his identical twin Aaron by impaling Aaron on an ice sculpture. He returned later, assuming Aaron's identity, and Petra killed him by impaling him with some kind of long rod. He'd kidnapped her and taken her out to the Everglades, so it may have been some kind of fishing spear. Petra knew after he kissed her that "Aaron" was really Roman, and Michael got a fingerprint hit to prove it.

Alano Miller played the Zazo twins.

Rogelio bought an enormous house in Miami and Xo moved in with him. Rogelio's mother, played by Rita Moreno, disliked Xo. She told Xo she'd never forgive her for not telling Rogelio she was pregnant with Jane. In truth, Xo had told Rogelio and he'd told her to have an abortion. He was ashamed of this truth, but finally revealed it to his mother.

Andrea Navedo played Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva.

Jane first met Rafael at a yacht club five years earlier and shared a memorable afternoon getting to know him. He was a rich playboy, and they shared an amazing kiss. Jane never heard from him again, and he went on to steal Petra away from her own fiance, Lachlan, and marry her. Without even trying to do so, Rafael also stole Jane away from Michael. She realized she had feelings for him first, and then he realized it as well. He divorced Petra, and Jane ended things with Michael. Well, Michael's ex-girlfriend saw they'd broken up on Facebook, so she joined the same writing group as Jane in order to get more information. Things were going well with Andie and Michael until he found out she'd stalked Jane and lied to him. So, Michael ended things with Andie, and saw renewed hope for he and Jane after Rafael ended things with her.

Rachel DiPillo played Andie. She also stars in the second spin-off of "Chicago Fire" called "Chicago Med". Michael Rady played Lachlan Moore, who worked for Emilio at The Marbella.

Jane was great at writing fake apology letters between her mother Xo and abuela Alba when she was a child. She even wrote some scenes for "The Passions of Santos" while Rogelio was still working on the show. She did the last part of her education on a teaching assignment to a Catholic high school where Rogelio's former stepdaughters attended.

It was Xo whose dream was being a singer, but she taught dance classes to youngsters as well. Rogelio was actor enough for the entire family.

She'd experienced false labor just the day before, so when she went into labor during her grad school interview, she was sure it was the same situation. She was on her way home and talking to Xo when they realized it was real labor. A very nice lady helped her talk to the bus driver and get to St. Luke's hospital to deliver the baby. And, while the contractions did advance quickly, her dilation did not.

There was time for everyone to get there before the baby was born. Jane was so shocked when the baby turned out to be a boy.

She and Rafael decided to name him Mateo.

When Jane went into labor, the quickest flight out was the next morning, so they spent some time partying with Rogelio's fans. They woke up feeling awful the next morning, but in plenty of time to catch their flight to Miami. After getting a police escort from Michael to the hospital, seeing the baby born, and hearing his long name (Mateo Gloriano Rogelio Solano Villanueva), Xo and Rogelio found a CD in their bag that read "Xo and Ro". When they played it, they (and all of us) found out they'd gotten married the night before in Vegas!

We also found out that Petra discovered Rafael's sperm donation had been divided into two vials, one lost for a long time, and she took it for herself. Then, sadly, at the very end of episode 22, Sin Rostro kidnapped baby Mateo.
