Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Sun's first flashback, how many glasses of champagne were seen on the waiter's (Jin's) tray?

Answer: Three

In the flashback, Jin and Sun appear in stark contrast to who they have now become on the island.
We see Sun, dressed elegantly and chatting with two friends, as a waiter brings a tray carrying three cocktail glasses. We know at once by Sun's facial expressions that it is no ordinary situation. Later, in the gazebo, Sun and Jin secretly reunite and he gives her a white orchid as a vow for his love.
While this episode reveals the change in their personalities and relationship from Sun's perspective, the partner episode "In Translation" fills the gaps and explains from Jin's point of view.
2. As Jack led Charlie, Locke, and Kate to the caves for fresh water, Kate asked how Jack had come to find this place. How did Jack respond?

Answer: Luck

Here we view one of the first (of many) mysterious island discoveries. The bodies of a male and female, at least forty or fifty years old, are found in the caves. With them are the black and white stones, which are symbolically important throughout many episodes. Theories were raised that the bodies, nicknamed "Adam and Eve", were in fact those of Amelia Earhart and her copilot/navigator.

Although the timing may be approximately correct, the theory was largely dismissed by further evaluation. It is concluded that "Adam and Eve" were just two among many unfortunate whose fate brought them to the mysterious island.
3. Where in Iraq is Sayid from?

Answer: Tikrit

Just a little factual information: Tikrit is located nearly 100 miles north of Baghdad in Iraq, and is the location of the old palace of Baiji. There are also several large military bases in Tikrit.
Michael sarcastically asked Sayid where he came from, because of Sayid's language use. (Once again, he is faced with questions of discrimination and doubt.) This was after Jin attacked Michael, and Sayid and Sawyer had to restrain him with the Marshal's handcuffs.
4. In which of Sun's flashbacks (six were seen in this episode) did she NOT receive a gift from Jin?

Answer: Fourth

In the first flashback (at the cocktail party), Jin met Sun in the gazebo and gave her the white orchid flower as a vow of his love and the promise to get her a diamond.
This became reality in the second flashback, which took place on a bridge near a gorgeous lake, in which Jin gave Sun a diamond engagement ring and promised to marry her after working for her father. (Sun's distraught expression hinted the danger involved.)
In the third flashback, where it was apparent things were beginning to change, Jin gave Sun the Shar-pei puppy for company. (Sun asked if he remembered when all she needed was a flower.)
The dog was much bigger by the forth flashback, which showed the passing of time and the realization that Sun no longer knew her husband.
5. After arriving at the caves, Locke looked around in admiration and said, "It's amazing." Charlie replied, "Absolutely. It's totally ___________."

Answer: You

This was an unusual response by Charlie to Locke.
While Kate and Jack bonded, Locke took the opportunity to "get to know Charlie better" as they searched the plane wreckage. Locke was revealed to have known Charlie's secret (his addiction) all along, and asked that he give it up by choice before running out. Charlie rejected the idea, until Locke brought up the guitar. He explained that the island could give Charlie what he wanted, but the island must get something in return.
One of the many mysterious philosophies of the island.
6. In Sun's flashback, she returned from a shopping trip with designer label bags. What name did the black bag she was holding read?

Answer: Chanel

Chanel is a well-known, designer label for clothes, cosmetics and jewelry.
It is at this point that Sun gets her Shar-pei puppy from Jin. Their marriage is now visibly strained, and work for her father has begun to consume Sun's husband.
7. How many gallons of water per day did Jack estimate that the survivors on the beach would need to consume?

Answer: 23 gallons

This one required a little math: In the caves, Jack mentioned to Kate that each of the 46 survivors needed half a gallon of water each day. (46 divided by half gallons equals 23 gallons total.) Jack insisted that hauling water to the people was not going to work, but rather bringing the people to "dig in" and reside in the caves.

Some survivors (such as Sun, Jin, Charlie, and Hurley, and later Claire and others) accepted the proposal and relocated. Others rejected it, such as Kate, Sayid, Michael, Walt, Sawyer, Shannon and Boone, and they remained waiting for rescue by the signal fire.
8. Which of the survivors was not seen wearing a striped shirt in this episode?

Answer: Hurley

What the survivors wear may not be the most relevant or important clue available in the episodes, but it may provide some type of relation to one another. In any case, Jin is seen wearing a striped suit (which he wore since the flight). Charlie is wearing a blue striped shirt also, and Walt is often seen in stripes as well.
Once again with the color red, Michael is seen wearing the red shirt in which he appears in this episode until the very last episode, while they are on the raft. (We know red naturally means "danger".)
The amazing similarities and transformations which occur between this episode and "In Translation" are astounding. (There, Michael attacks Jin, Sun reveals that she speaks English to everyone, and Jin still wears the cuffs.) By the final episode, Michael and Jin have become good friends and Jin hands Michael the watch which represented his "honor" (as well as his loyalty to his work).
9. Locke convinces Charlie to listen to him by bringing up that he was a fan of Charlie's band, Drive Shaft. What was the title of the second album?

Answer: Oil Change

It is likely that Locke had never listened to Charlie's band in his life, but he needed some way to make Charlie listen to him.
Charlie knew the exact amount of time since he had played his guitar (eight days and eleven hours), which gave a time reference to the time on the island. He also mentioned that the guitar had been unable to fit in the cabin. (In the final scene of part three of "Exodus", Charlie is seen stuffing the guitar case into the compartment on the plane.) His guitar music provided a backdrop for the song on Hurley's CD player, Willie Nelson's "Are You Sure".
10. Only one of Sun's flashbacks (the one in which she sees Jin return from "working") is partnered with another episode that occurs later in season one.

Answer: True

Sun's fourth flashback, in which Jin returns home in a bloody shirt and responds coldly and violently toward Sun, is in conjunction with a scene from Jin's flashback in "In Translation". The viewpoints vary drastically, as Jin is actually distraught by his actions (even though he comes off as being so violent to Sun).
Also, in the episode immediately preceding this episode ("White Rabbit"), Jack is seen pleading with the ticket agent at the airport counter. In this episode he is seen once again, with Jin behind him, and it is revealed to be a crucial time for Sun to make a life-altering choice. Would she take off in the car or board with Jin? Her choice (as well as that of Hurley, Sayid, Claire, etc.) landed her on Flight 815.
Another possibly important detail to note: At the beginning, Sun has a plant with a red and a yellow flower (which Jin steps on as he hurries to attack Michael). Later, in the first part of "Exodus", a red and a yellow flower appear in the jungle behind Jack in the "Dark Territory".
