Valiant is a knight who visits Camelot with the ambition of winning the battle tournament. He possesses a magic shield, with which he enters the tournament and battles his way to the top of the leader board until he faces Prince Arthur in the final. Having warned Arthur about the shield Merlin is desperately seeking a way to show people what he speaks is the truth and that Valiant's shield is enchanted.

He succeeds, performing risky magic to make the snakes on the shield burst to life and everyone realises he's cheating in the tournament.

Kilgharrah lives in a cave deep under Camelot. Merlin first hears the dragon speak to him shortly after arriving at Camelot. Not being able to sleep he seeks the dragon out and finds him after performing some comical magic on the guards to get them out of the way. Kilgharrah is the one who tells Merlin of his destiny to protect the young Prince Arthur in order to unite the land of Albion which, it has to be said, doesn't go down well with Merlin at first.

Morgana is a strong minded individual who doesn't often agree with Uther's ways. She first displays her dislike to Uther in the very first episode, telling him she thought there was no need killing a boy who practiced magic but did no harm to anyone. She's a kind person at heart who gets on well with Merlin and Arthur, well ... sometimes.

Merlin gets the sword from Gwen and then takes it to Kilgharrah (The Great Dragon) for him to burnish. Once burnished the sword becomes known as Excalibur and has great power, being able to kill things that are already dead. Kilgharrah warns however that Arthur should be the only one to wield Excalibur and Uther ends up using it to defeat the Black Knight. Kilgharrah is angry to learn this news and instructs Merlin to dispose of Excalibur in a place that no mortal will ever find it.

He butters up to Arthur and gains a place as his servant, much to the dislike of Merlin. During the night Cedric steals Arthur's keys to Cornelius Sigan's tomb and takes a jewel that possesses him!

Lady Catrina comes to Camelot in season 2, episodes 5 and 6. She is disguised as a beautiful woman when actually she's a rotten old, ugly troll! She is a greedy creature and has a plan to make Uther fall in love with her and sign over his riches. Her plans are foiled however when Merlin finds out she's a troll and conjures up a plan with Giaus to make Uther see sense.

After keeping his promise and letting Kilgharrah (The Great Dragon) free, Merlin needs to find someone who can stop Kilgharrah terrorising Camelot. He and Arthur set out in search of Balinor, the last known dragon lord alive. Merlin is shocked to find Balinor is his father and even more so when he tragically dies! But he didn't die before telling Merlin he is also a dragon lord and must stop Kilgharrah himself; hence Merlin becomes the last dragon lord.
