Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Was Emrys seen during the fourth season?

Answer: Yes

Emrys, the name Merlin goes by when he magically becomes aged, was seen several times during the season. First, he was seen in "The Darkest Hour (Part 1)". Morgana had a dream that she was to die because of Emrys. She made it her goal to discover who Emrys was and stop him. Emrys later appeared in "The Wicked Day". Merlin and Arthur went to a hovel where Emrys was said to live. Arthur met Emrys (while Merlin transformed himself into Emrys) and told him that Uther was dying. Emrys was to travel to Camelot in an attempt to save Uther's life. Emrys was next seen in "A Servant of Two Masters" when he went to Morgana's hovel to destroy the Fomorroh.

It was here that Emrys and Morgana met for the first time. They briefly fought each other, but Emrys was successful.

He was last seen in "The Sword in the Stone (Part 2)" where he placed a magical straw doll under Morgana's bed, which caused Morgana's magic to stop working.
2. Morgana formed an alliance (whether briefly or long-term) with several people over the course of the season. Who was not among these people?

Answer: Julius Borden

Julius Borden was one of Gaius's former pupils who wished to find the last part of the model that would help him find the last remaining dragon egg. Although Julius Borden was not a man to be trusted, he never worked with Morgana. As for the dragon egg, Merlin helped it hatch and named the dragon Aithusa, meaning "light of the sun".
Queen Annis formed a brief alliance with Morgana in "His Father's Son". Morgana would enchant Arthur's sword, so he would be unable to fight Derian. Annis lost her husband and wanted to avenge it by having Derian kill Arthur. This alliance ended when Annis realized what she was doing was wrong.
Agravaine, Arthur's uncle (his mother's brother), worked with Morgana continuously throughout the fourth season. He leaked secrets to Morgana and acted as her spy within Camelot, now that everyone knew Morgana was no longer loyal to Camelot. The alliance ended at the end of the season.
The warlord Helios worked with Morgana for the final three episodes of the season. He and Morgana would use stolen plans that showed Camelot's defenses and launch an attack. Like with Agravaine, Morgana's alliance with Helios ended at the end of the season.
3. In which episode was Merlin forced against his will to kill Arthur?

Answer: A Servant of Two Masters

In "A Servant of Two Masters", Morgana and her men captured Merlin. She placed a multi-headed creature called a Fomorroh inside Merlin. This caused Merlin to believe he was supposed to kill Arthur. Each time a Fomorroh died, a new one was born in its place, although it took time for it happen.

The only way to truly defeat it was to destroy the rest of the Fomorroh. Gaius realized this and killed one of the Fomorroh, which allowed Merlin enough time to get to Morgana's hovel and destroy the rest.
4. What was ultimately responsible for Morgause's death?

Answer: Morgana stabbed her with a knife.

At the end of the previous season, Merlin attacked Morgause with magic, which caused her to have permanent scars on her face. Morgause took Morgana to the Isle of the Blessed where Morgause wanted Morgana to kill her to release the Dorocha, spirits from the afterlife. Although hesitant, Morgana eventually stabbed Morgause, which killed her and released the Dorocha.
5. Which knight of Camelot died by sacrificing himself to stop the Dorocha?

Answer: Lancelot

Merlin was told that to stop the Dorocha a sacrifice was needed. This sacrifice must go through the veil that separates the living from the dead. Arthur was the original choice, but Merlin knew that Arthur's place was at Camelot and wouldn't allow him to do so. Merlin wished to take Arthur's place.

However, Lancelot knew Arthur and Merlin needed each other, so Lancelot took Merlin's place. This worked and the Dorocha were stopped at the cost of Lancelot's life.
6. A king sent a couple of assassins to kill Arthur; however, it was Uther who fought and killed the assassins. In the process, Uther himself got stabbed. Who sent these assassins?

Answer: Odin

Odin was still upset with Arthur, since Arthur was responsible for the death of his son. To avenge this, Odin sent two assassins, the Gleeman and Geldred, to masquerade as guests at Arthur's birthday party. Their entertainment was a knife throwing game.

The Gleeman put an apple in Arthur's mouth (for when he would throw a knife at Arthur's mouth, which was to be stopped by the apple), which turned out to contain a sedative. When Arthur became weak, Geldred and the Gleeman would kill Arthur. However, Uther intervened and saved Arthur, but got stabbed in the process. Arthur tried to find a cure by seeking the help of Emrys but due to unforeseen events involving Morgana, Emrys's solution ended up causing Uther's death.
7. Morgana worked with Alator to try and learn the identity of the sorcerer Emrys. Who learned Emrys's true identity?

Answer: Alator who did not reveal it to Morgana

After a confrontation with Emrys, Morgana was desperate to know who Emrys was, so she hired Alator to figure it out. Alator kidnapped Gaius and mentally tortured him until he revealed who Emrys was. Gaius unwillingly told Alator that Emrys was Merlin. Even though Alator told Morgana that he knew who Emrys was, he wasn't going to let Morgana know.

He used a spell to knock her unconscious allowing Gaius and the others (everyone who came to rescue Gaius) a chance to escape. Alator told Merlin (before the latter departed) that he knew what Merlin had gone through, keeping magic a secret while trying to fulfill his destiny, since Alator was in somewhat of a similar situation.
8. What did Guinevere do that resulted in her banishment from Camelot?

Answer: She was seen kissing Lancelot.

Morgana believed she was the rightful queen of Camelot and therefore did not wish for Guinevere to be queen. One attempt at this was by resurrecting Lancelot and having him in a relationship with Guinevere. Since Lancelot was under Morgana's spell, this was easy for her to do. Guinevere seemed to not want to have anything to do with Lancelot, now that she loved Arthur, so Lancelot gave her a magical bracelet which would increase Guinevere's feelings towards Lancelot.

This magical bracelet was what eventually caused the two of them to kiss. Morgana's plan succeeded when Arthur saw this and banished Guinevere from Camelot. Agravaine, who was Arthur's right-hand man and was in on Morgana's plan, helped with this. Morgana then had Lancelot kill himself so there would be no evidence.

Interestingly enough, no connection was made between Guinevere's strange behavior and Guinevere receiving the bracelet, both of which happened at approximately the same time.
9. Why did Arthur not wish to continue his romance with Princess Mithian?

Answer: He saw Guinevere's engagement ring and was reminded of her

Arthur had agreed to marry Princess Mithian in exchange for resolving a dispute between Camelot and a bordering kingdom. Merlin, who wished Arthur and Guinevere would marry, put a spell on Arthur, so he would appear foolish and Princess Mithian would not want to marry Arthur.

However, this did not work. While on a hunt with Mithian and the knights of Camelot, Arthur found Guinevere's engagement ring and was reminded of the feelings he had towards her. Arthur decided to call off the engagement to Mithian and came up with a new deal that would satisfy Mithian's kingdom.
10. Which of the following people did not die in "The Sword in the Stone"?

Answer: Morgana

Near the beginning of "The Sword in the Stone (Part 2)", Merlin, Arthur, and a few other people were on the run from Morgana's armies led by Agravaine. Merlin separated from the group hoping to create a diversion. Agravaine saw Merlin perform magic and concluded Merlin was Emrys. Agravaine tried to kill Merlin, but Merlin prevented that by using his magic to kill Agravaine first.
Near the end of the episode, a group of civilians and knights became engaged in a battle. Helios and Arthur fought each other. As Helios prepared to stab Arthur with his sword, Isolde stabbed Helios in the back. Helios then turned around and stabbed Isolde. Helios died instantly, but Isolde took a little longer dying in the arms of her lover, Tristan.
Morgana was stabbed by a knight and later was knocked unconscious by Merlin's magic. Although Morgana appeared to have died, she was able to escape Camelot. Morgana was found in the forest by Aithusa, who proceeded to heal her.
