Uther's wife, Igraine, was unable to conceive a child, so Uther asked the sorceress Nimueh to help them. However, to create a life, a life had to be taken, and that life was Igraine's. Uther was so angry about this that he banished and prohibited magic of any kind. Several people were angry with him about this decision, including Tauren, Edwin Muriden, and Mary Collins.
Sophia was not one of these people. She wanted to kill Arthur that was she could be accepted back into Avalon, the land of eternal youth.

In "A Remedy to Cure All Ills", it was Gaius and not Merlin who visited the Great Dragon. According to the dragon, it had been 20 years since they last met. Their topic of conversation was Merlin's destiny in helping Arthur become king and unite the land of Albion.

Morgana was a seer, which meant that she can see into the future. These visions came to her through dreams, which she had considered nightmares. Gaius gave her potions to help eliminate the nightmares, but she still has some visions on occasion. One of these visions was Arthur being drowned by Sophia. Another was Arthur getting killed by the snakes on Knight Valiant's shield.

Merlin had arrived in Camelot from his village of Ealdor. According to his mother Hunith, she hoped that Gaius would be able to help Merlin control his magic, since so many people in Ealdor were noticing Merlin using magic.

Answer: causing a curse

When Arthur noticed a magical amulet in Gwen's home, he believed Gwen was a sorceress who was responsible for causing a curse. The curse was actually caused by an afanc that was conjured by Nimueh. Merlin, with the help of Arthur and Morgana, defeated the afanc, so the curse would end and Gwen would be freed. Gaius showed Uther an object with the mark of Nimueh on it, proving to him that it was Nimueh and not Gwen who was behind the curse.

Answer: handmaiden

Nimueh wanted revenge on Merlin for stopping her previous plan (poisoning Camelot's water), so she disguised herself as a handmaiden so she could switch Arthur's chalice with a poisoned chalice. She then told Merlin about the poisoned chalice knowing that he would tell Uther and therefore Merlin would be forced to drink from the chalice to prove that what he was saying was the truth. Nimueh used the name Cara during her time in Camelot. Nimueh escaped before she could be captured or questioned.

Answer: Merlin threw it into a lake.

Merlin went to Gwen's home to borrow a sword, which he proceeded to take to the Great Dragon, so that he could breathe on it and give the sword its power to kill the dead. The dragon warned Merlin that only Arthur should use the sword, but Uther used it instead.

The sword did kill the dead, but when the dragon heard that Uther used it, he told Merlin that the sword would only bring evil and then instructed Merlin to hide the sword in a place where no one can find it. Merlin decided to throw into a lake.

Answer: William

William took credit for the magic Merlin did. William and Merlin noticed they were too many of Kanan's men, so Merlin used a spell that created wind that would help the villagers of Ealdor in defeating Kanan's men. Arthur noticed this wind and concluded either William or Merlin cast the spell. William was shot by Kanan and while dying, he stated that he cast the spell.

Answer: unicorn

Merlin and Arthur were on a hunting trip, and Arthur spotted and killed a unicorn. According to Anhora, the keeper of the unicorns, if someone kills a unicorn, then they will unleash a curse. To undo the curse, Arthur had to prove he was pure of heart, and he did this when he was willing to die for Merlin. Also because of this, the unicorn lived again.

Answer: her father's grave

Morgana decided to work with Tauren to kill Uther after seeing an innocent man die (Gwen's father, Tom). Morgana arranged for her and Uther to visit the grave of Morgana's father, Gorlois. While Uther was distracted, Tauren would kill Uther. When Tauren was about to make the kill, Morgana had a change of heart, believing that Uther cared about her.

She stabbed Tauren before he was able to kill Uther.
