Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Necessary Evil", a season two episode, shows a flashback to when Quark and Odo first met. When Odo states that he is looking for the "proprietor of this establishment", which two things does Quark make sure of before he admits that he owns the bar?

Answer: "Does he owe you money?" and "Are you here to arrest him?"

It is the epitome of their relationship in one exchange. Quark is initially wary of a debt he might owe. Then he is concerned about being arrested. When Odo says he is there investigating a murder and Quark realizes who he is, Quark is somehow aware of a "Cardassian neck trick" that Odo can perform as a shapeshifter that could be an entertaining spectacle to net Quark extra profits at the bar.

In other words and as usual, Odo is completely professional in going about his serious task, and Quark is considering any clever scheme he can come up with to improve his business.
2. In the first season episode "A Man Alone", Odo is suspected of murdering a Bajoran named Ibudan by stabbing him in the back. We see Quark speak up to defend Odo to a group of Bajorans who are suspicious of Odo remaining chief of security. Select the phrase that completes the following quote by Quark to this group of Bajorans: "He's an ill-tempered, overbearing crosspatch. But he was no Cardassian collaborator ___."

Answer: and he's no killer

"Nobody knows him like I know him" is what Quark says about Odo just before telling the Bajorans that Odo is not a killer. When one of the Bajorans expresses his surprise that Quark would defend his enemy, Quark replies "guess that's the closest thing he has in this world to a friend." It is a perfect scene to present the depth of the respect Quark has for Odo.

In the end, Odo was vindicated of the murder, since the man who died was a clone of Ibudan, and Ibudan killed the clone himself hoping to frame Odo for the crime. Few people believed in Odo's innocence when so much evidence pointed towards his involvement in the murder of a man he wanted off the station, but Quark came to Odo's defense and proclaimed his support unequivocally.
3. In the episode "Civil Defense" from the third season, which revolves around trying to stop Deep Space Nine from self-destructing, Quark claims he has a higher Cardassian security clearance than Odo does.

Answer: True

This amusing interaction delights viewers right at the start of the episode. Odo is attempting to override a security program using Cardassian security codes. When Quark storms in on Odo at work, seemingly in a huff about an unresolved security issue adversely affecting his profits, he offers to assist Odo in his task so order can be restored aboard the station and Quark's business can resume unimpeded.

This is one of many examples of Quark helping his greatest adversary and presenting his motives for doing so as completely self-serving, maintaining his pride as both Quark and Odo stubbornly refuse to reveal any positive feelings to each other.
4. At the end of the 1994 episode "Civil Defense", Odo claims he only praised Quark as the most devious Ferengi he'd ever met to be nice because Odo thought they were going to die. Odo then offered a list of Ferengi that he thinks are actually more devious than Quark is. Which one of the following Ferengi was not included in this list?

Answer: Moogie

Shortly after Quark and Odo discover they are trapped in Odo's office, we are treated to this quintessentially Quark-and-Odo exchange:

Quark: "I'm stuck here with you?"
Odo: "No. I'm stuck here with you. Believe me, a far worse fate."

In the final scene of the episode, Quark comes upon Odo's official security evaluation that asserts Quark is a "self-important con artist who's nowhere near as clever as he thinks he is." And, adding more insult and disparagement to this brutal assessment, Odo lists the Grand Nagus, Quark's brother Rom, Quark's cousin Gaila who owns a moon, as well as two other Ferengi Odo has never even met as more devious than Quark.
5. "Through the Looking Glass" is a season three episode that starts off with Odo telling Sisko he found 27 animals in Quark's storeroom, and Quark and Morn were painting numbers on their backs so that they could stage fights amongst the poor creatures. Which animals did Odo find?

Answer: Voles

Quark is quick to defend each accusation Odo makes in this situation: Vole infestations are common; they were only painting numbers on the voles' backs to keep track of how many they captured. In the end, when Odo is told to get rid of the voles, Quark claims it'll break Morn's hearts to lose his beloved pets.
6. At the beginning of the fourth season episode "Crossfire", Quark approaches Odo to file a noise complaint against him because Quark can hear Odo's shapeshifting throughout the night. What does Odo do to appease Quark?

Answer: Soundproof his room

"Last night, it sounded like a Takaran wildebeest was tromping around up there." That is how Quark expressed the extent of the nuisance Odo caused with his nocturnal noise. When Kira points out the coincidence of Quark's quarters being just below Odo's, Odo implies luck had nothing to do with it, as though the irritation it caused Quark was intended. In any possible way, the two will have some squabble.

Odo does eventually have a construction crew soundproof the floor. When Quark claims he's "touched" Odo would go out of his way to do this for him, Odo sidesteps the appearance of doing anything nice for Quark by claiming he is "reinforcing" the floor and the soundproofing is "incidental".
7. The 1996 episode "Crossfire" presents a scene in which Quark reveals something surprisingly intimate about Odo. When Odo finds a Ferengi eavesdropping device and drops it in Quark's punch instead of returning it, Quark claims what really has Odo in such a negative mood is that he's in love. With whom does Quark claim Odo is in love?

Answer: Kira

Odo has never been one to express emotions. For that matter, he positively eschews anything that isn't strictly in line with maintaining order. But, from the very beginning of the episode, when he is getting everything perfectly in order and keeping a meticulous eye on the time, it is clear that Odo looks forward to Kira's arrival and he cheers up instantly when Kira enters his office and smiles.

When Quark shares the observation that Odo seems to be in love with Kira, Odo becomes immediately defensive and exits the room.

Later, when Odo noticed how he felt about Kira pursuing another man, he reacted in a fit of rage, breaking and smashing everything in his quarters. When Quark entered to check on the commotion, Odo admitted Quark was right about his feelings for Kira. It is only fitting that Quark be the one to point this out to Odo - that Quark, of all people, reveals the deepest insights into Odo's feelings and behavior.

This is one of the most intimate moments between Quark and Odo. Quark delivers a touching speech to Odo about how his unaddressed feelings are tearing him apart, and provides Odo an alternative outlook on Quark's gambling pools: the fact bets exist on Odo's ability to detect and arrest any perpetrator indicates people look up to him in that way.
8. The season five episode "The Ascent" features Odo and Quark crash-landing on an inhospitable, icy planet when an explosive nearly destroys their runabout. After spending several days of hiking up a mountain on this frigid planet, Quark and Odo are saved by which of the following actions?

Answer: Quark manages to transmit a signal to the Defiant

Odo suffers a broken leg after a scuffle with Quark, and a lot of the episode is an examination into how Odo deals with the frailties of his human condition now that he has lost his shapeshifting abilities. Combining that with being around the insufferable Quark is like adding kindling to a fire for their emotions to erupt.

When Odo breaks his leg, Quark helps him create a splint for it and is concerned about Odo's survival throughout the episode. Even as the episode ends with Odo and Quark recuperating in sickbay, the two reiterate that they hate each other as they said on the freezing planet.

The two adversaries will deny any love they have for each other until the end - even surviving a life or death struggle after several hopeless days will not change that.
9. In the 1996 episode "The Ascent", Quark makes the observation that Odo has always wanted to be a Solid. He says now that Odo is a Solid, like the rest of the DS9 crew, he has been given what he wanted. Finish the Quark quote that completes this insight: "You're one of us now, and I can finally sit on a chair and know with absolute certainty ___."

Answer: that it isn't you

With this humorous line, Quark virtually reveals he has had to be constantly vigilant in case Odo could be hiding as any bar object to spy on Quark. In the list Quark gives to support his theory that Odo wants to be a Solid, he includes watching Morn eat, watching customers gamble and flirt, and Odo's platonic friendship with Kira.
10. During their final interaction in the series finale, Odo refuses acknowledge any respect for Quark or even say goodbye to him. In his farewell to Kira, Odo tells her to inform everyone on Deep Space Nine that he will miss them. Does he include Quark in the people he will miss?

Answer: Yes

After all is said and done, Odo verbalizes his affection for Quark before he joins the Changelings. Quark told Kira he wasn't offended at all by Odo's abrupt departure. "That man loves me. Couldn't you see it? It was written all over his back."
