In the episode "Past Prologue" we are introduced to Garak, the lone Cardassian citizen on the station. Doctor Bashir and Garak would go on to have many lunches together during the run of the show and the two would form an uneasy but close friendship.

Andrew Robinson was born in New York and started his acting career in the 1960s. He originally auditioned for the role of Odo on "Star Trek: Deep space 9" before landing the part of the recurring character Garak. His daughter, Rachel Robinson, played in one "Star Trek: Deep Space 9" episode - "The Visitor".

The civilian governing body of the Cardassian Union, the Detapa Council, found safety on Deep Space 9 after the Klingon invasion of Cardassian territory. When the Klingons boarded the station Garak and Dukat fought alongside each other to protect the council members although Garak did entertain the thought of killing Dukat in the process.

"In The Pale Moonlight" is one of the best critically acclaimed episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space 9". In it, Sisko and Garak conspire to bring the Romulans into the war by trying to convince Senator Vreenak of secret Dominion designs on the Romulan Star Empire. Vreenak finds out about the ruse but Garak has him killed while making it look like a Dominion attack.

The Romulans then declare war on the Dominion and join the Federation / Klingon alliance.

Garak has to work on a communications device in a dark, cramped space in order to escape from the Jem'Hadar prison camp. On several occasions he suffers anxiety attacks caused by claustrophobia but eventually he completes his task and manages to escape together with Worf, Bashir and Martok.

After Legate Damar's death Garak leads the charge on Dominion headquarters and he and Kira manage to make it all the way to where the Female Shapeshifter is hiding. Garak kills the Vorta Weyoun, ending a long line of Weyoun clones.

In "A Stitch In Time" Andrew Robinson tells the story of Garak after the Dominion War and his role in the establishment of a democratic Cardassia. The book is written entirely from Garak's perspective and features his correspondence with Julian Bashir as well as flashbacks into Garak's life. The novel was published in 2000.
