Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My So-Called Life
Answer: Claire Danes
One of the shows that was cancelled prematurely was 1994's "My So-Called Life". Starring Claire Danes ("Homeland") as fifteen-year-old Angela Chase, it was a poignant and funny picture of teenage angst, with all its trials and tribulations. Another future star, Jared Leto, played love interest Jordan Catalano.
2. The Cool Kids
Answer: Vicki Lawrence
"The Cool Kids", from 2018, was a misguided attempt to show how funny old people at a retirement center can be. Despite the formidable comedic talents of Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Martin Mull and Leslie Jordan, the show was not only NOT funny, but occasionally offensive. It was a comedy that needed to R.I.P. as soon as possible.
3. Almost Human
Answer: Karl Urban
Despite its Emmy Award nomination, the 2013 science fiction drama "Almost Human" lasted only one season. Set in the near future, the show pairs a human cop with an android partner to solve crimes and catch bad guys. Karl Urban ("The Boys") plays Detective John Kennex while Michael Ealy ("Stumptown") plays the human-like robot Dorian.
4. Firefly
Answer: Nathan Fillion
A great show that died before its time was the 2002 science fiction show "Firefly". The Joss Whedon show was about the renegade crew of the transport ship 'Serenity', who fight for their lives as they travel across the galaxy, while trying to avoid the authorities out to capture them. Nathan Fillion plays Captain Mal Reynolds, with Gina Torres as crewmate Ensign Zoe Washburne.
5. Dietland
Answer: Julianna Margulies
The wonderful actress Julianna Margulies has appeared in the successful series "ER" and as the star in "The Good Wife". In 2018's quirky "Dietland", based on the Sarai Walker novel, she plays the antagonist, Kitty Montgomery. Kitty is the selfish, vain boss of the obese Plum Kettle who continues to try every option to lose weight. Tamara Tunie ("SVU") also has a featured role.
6. Limitless
Answer: Hill Harper
The 2015 television show "Limitless" was based on the 2011 film of the same name. The Bradley Cooper role is played by Jake McDorman as the man who has extraordinary mental abilities. With the capacity to do just about anything, he is hired by the F.B.I. as a consultant. Spellman Boyle, another FBI agent, is played by Hill Harper who you may remember from "CSI: NY".
7. Proven Innocent
Answer: Kelsey Grammer
The premise of 2019's "Proven Innocent" was that a lawyer, Madeline Scott, who was once wrongly accused, sets out to defend others to free those wrongly convicted. She and her team gather evidence and fight hard against the forces of injustice, and a powerful political enemy named Gore Bellows, played by Kelsey Grammer with the same malevolence as Sideshow Bob.
8. Whiskey Cavalier
Answer: Scott Foley
The action/adventure show "Whiskey Cavalier" gave us the tension between FBI agent Will Chase, played by Scott Foley ("Felicity") and CIA operative Frankie Trowbridge (Lauren Cohan) who are forced to work together to save the world from evil. Apparently the chemistry was not what the creators had hoped, and this 2019 show was a one season blunder.
9. Freaks and Geeks
Answer: Jason Segal
"Freaks and Geeks" was a wonderful coming-of-age show from 1999. Set in high school, it presented the dichotomy between the 'cool kids' and the eggheads. The cast featured a "who's who" of future stars which included Jason Segal as Nick Andopolis, James Franco (Daneiel Desario), Seth Rogan (Ken Miller), John Francis Daley, Busy Phillips and Linda Cardellini.
10. Rel
Answer: Sinbad
"Rel" was based on the comedy of Lil Rel Howery. The premise of the show was that a Chicago comedian's life falls apart after he finds out his wife is cheating on him with his barber. This comedy (?) from 2018 was cancelled after one season. Sinbad (remember him?) played Rel's father, with an occasional appearance by the wonderful Marla Gibbs as a neighbor.
