Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Kareem Said comes into the prison, he is already a familiar name in the local community. His name, however, is not the name he was born with. What was he known as before his conversion to Islam?

Answer: Goodson Truman

Goodson Truman became Kareem Said when he changed religions and became a Muslim. Prior to this, it was implied that he came from a Christian family, as his sister is a reverend. Kareem's sister still call him Goodson.

Kevin Ketchum is Supreme Allah's real name. Arnold Jackson is better known as Poet, and Raymond Browne is Mondo Browne's true name.
2. When Kareem suffers from a heart attack, which inmate witnesses his suffering and leaves him to die?

Answer: Huseni Mershah

Huseni is a young Muslim who is sent to Oz after murdering a Hasidic Jew. He joins Kareem's congregation, but immediately begins to question him, and challenge his leadership.

Kareem is diagnosed with hypertension and refuses to take any medication, wishing to keep his mind clear from drugs. This leads to him suffering a heart attack in his cell. Huseni witnesses this, but leaves Kareem to die, in hopes of taking over leadership. When Kareem survives, and Huseni's betrayal is revealed, he is shunned by the other prisoners and eventually takes his own life.
3. Despite being the only prisoner in possession of a gun at the start of the riot, Kareem never fires the weapon.

Answer: False

Kareem finds the gun in his laundry, where it has been left by a CO who is sympathetic to Kareem's cause. When the riot breaks out, Kareem fires the gun once, in order to gain everyone's attention and convince the prisoners to get organised. He later threatens Adebisi with the gun, after Adebisi begins to go crazy from heroin withdrawal, but he does not fire it. Later on, Scott Ross uses Kareem's gun to shoot Tim McManus.
4. In season 2, Kareem is granted a pardon by Governor Devlin. Rather than becoming a free man, however, Kareen ends up back in prison. Why is this?

Answer: Kareem refuses the pardon and voluntarily returns to prison.

Governor Devlin decides he will grant clemency to one Muslim prisoner, in honour of Ramadan. When the Muslim inmates hear of this, they all suspect that Kareem will be chosen and this leads to some resentment. Zahir Arif, in particular, is unhappy that Kareem might be released because he wants to go himself and be with his children.

Kareem is ultimately chosen and he initially accepts. During a speech in front of the media, he publicly refuses the pardon and criticizes the Governor and his actions, humiliating him in front of the press. He returns to Emerald City to a round of applause.
5. Which group does NOT publicly voice their displeasure at Kareem's perceived relationship with Tricia Ross?

Answer: The Latinos

Tricia Ross is the sister of prisoner Scott Ross. Kareem meets her when he begins proceedings to sue the prison over the prisoners' treatment during the riot. Scott is friendly with the Aryans, so they are not impressed that his sister would be involved with a black man. Similarly, the Homeboys and the Muslims are unhappy at Kareem having a relationship with a white woman. Ultimately, Tricia decides to move to California and make a new life for herself with the payment she receives from the lawsuit, ending her relationship with Kareem.
6. Kareem is admitted to the hospital wing after he is bitten by a rat. Which CO put the rat into Kareem's cell?

Answer: Len Lopresti

Lopresti seems to be very friendly with the Aryans and the Bikers, so when Kareem is locked in solitary confinement after a battle with both of these groups, he throws the rat into his cell. Hamid Khan and Chris Keller are also sent to solitary after the battle, while Beecher and Schillinger end up in the hospital.
7. Kareem agrees to help Jason Cramer get a retrial. What does he hope the result of the retrial will be?

Answer: Jason will be found guilty and sentenced accordingly.

Jason Cramer is approached by a former member of his jury, who confesses that another juror bullied the others into finding Jason guilty, based purely on the fact that he is gay. Despite the fact that Kareem hates homosexuality, he takes on Jason's case because he believes Jason is entitled to a fair trial. Kareem knows that Jason is guilty of murder, so he hopes that the retrial will find Jason guilty, albeit for the right reasons.

However, prior to the trial, the detective who arrested Jason steps forward and admits he planted evidence at the scene, and Jason's conviction is overturned. Kareem is horrified that his actions helped a murderer be released back into society.
8. Which two-word phrase does Kareem shout after stabbing Schillinger and Robson in the library?

Answer: Adebisi lives

Since murdering Adebisi in self-defence, Kareem has struggled with his anger and guilt surrounding the situation. This is made worse when Beecher suggests that Kareem needs to get in touch with the Adebisi-like parts of himself. When Beecher gets into an argument with the Aryans in the library, Kareem steps in and stabs both Schillinger and Robson, before dramatically yelling "Adebisi lives!".

This act of violence is out of character for Kareem, and he is subsequently tried for attempted murder, though his sentence is not revealed.
9. Which prisoner does McManus convince Kareem to take under his wing and keep out of trouble?

Answer: Omar White

Omar White becomes something of a project for McManus, who is determined to get him off of drugs and help him turn his life around. However, after many failed attempts, he begins to despair and turns Omar's rehabilitation over to Kareem, in the hope that helping Omar would also help Kareem.

Although Omar irritates Kareem, he also looks up to him and when he hears one of the Aryans talking about killing Kareem, he attacks him, landing himself back in solitary confinement.
10. What are Kareem's last words, said to Zahir Arif after being stabbed?

Answer: "Arif, don't harm him."

Kareem is stabbed by Lemuel Idzik, who poses as a reporter wanting to interview him. Lemuel had previously met Kareem in passing and became distraught when Kareem told him about the inevitable death of the universe. The obsession grew for years, until Lemuel felt he had to kill Kareem.

As he lay dying in Arif's arms, Kareem asks Arif not to hurt Lemuel. Arif makes sure that the Muslims know that this is Kareem's last wish, and they stand by it.
