Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "No Exit"- In this episode, about the ghost of serial killer H.H. Holmes, we learn Ellen and Jo's last name. What is it?

Answer: Harvell

In the episodes before this, the sign on the bar read "Roadhouse", but we couldn't quite make out the other word. It turned out that the place is called Harvell's Roadhouse, and we could hear Ellen say this when she answered the phone.
2. "The Usual Suspects"- Sam and Dean are held and questioned on murder charges in a small town. Which famous horror movie actress, from the 1970s, played the part of Detective Diana Ballard?

Answer: Linda Blair

While all of these women are famous for their horror movie roles, only Jamie and Linda starred in 1970s horror flicks. Jamie was in the original "Halloween" as Laurie Strode in 1978 and Linda played Regan MacNeil in 1973's "The Exorcist". Neve played Sidney in the "Scream" series in the 1990s and Sarah played in "Scream 2" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" before going on to play Buffy Summers for seven seasons on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
3. "Crossroad Blues"- Dean tricked the demon (in female form) into a devil's trap under his car.

Answer: False

He did get "her" stuck in a devil's trap, but she didn't fall for the one he did with his car. He intentionally made that one visible. Instead, he walked her under one he'd drawn on the underside of a wood structure. This is where she tormented him about the location of his father, implying John Winchester was suffering great torment after death.
4. "Crossroad Blues"- After making a deal with the demon, each person was given just one full year of success and happiness.

Answer: False

They had much longer than a year, about nine or ten. But, after that time, the hellhounds came to collect their souls.
5. "Croatoan"- What was the plague in this episode of season two?

Answer: Demonic virus

The town of River Grove had become infected with a demonic virus that turned them all into violent automatons. The scene was like a small homage to Stephen King's novel "Cell", where a cellphone "pulse" turned anyone who heard it into violent zombies. And, though Sam appeared to be infected, he never changed. This re-enforces the idea that Sam could be destined to turn evil, or not.
6. "Hunted"- Who was the lady, also a psychic, that warned Sam of his impending death?

Answer: Ava Wilson

Ava had a dream that Sam would be blown up. She warned him of this, and he told her about their possible destiny as children born at the same time with special powers. At the end of the episode it appeared as though the demon had captured her.
Katharine Isabelle played Ava. Early in her career she went as Katie Murray. She's the daughter of Graeme Murray, who's had a long career in Hollywood behind the camera.
All three incorrect choices are actresses who portrayed Victoria Hudson Frame Harrison McKinnon on the soap opera "Another Word". These actresses also played Vicky's twin sister, Marley.
7. "Playthings"- A haunted hotel. Two little girls. A spooky bellman/bartender. Is this the Overlook Hotel? No. What IS the name of the haunted hotel in this episode?

Answer: Pierpont Inn

This episode did remind me a lot of "The Shining". Sherwin, the bellman, reminded me of old Grady/Lloyd combined. The two little girls were reminiscent of the twins in the 1980 film "The Shining", though not included in Stephen King's original work. Susan Thompson was selling the Pierpont, which had been in her family for over a century.
8. "Playthings"- Susan Thompson had a daughter named Tyler. What was the name of Tyler's ghostly friend?

Answer: Maggie

Maggie was the ghost of Margaret Thompson, who died by drowning in the pool at the hotel. Her sister Rose, who was Susan's mother, had used Creole Voodoo to keep Maggie at bay for many years. When Rose had a stroke several weeks prior, Maggie had befriended young Tyler. It was Maggie's intention to keep a companion tied to the hotel forever, as the new owners planned to demolish the building.
Conchita Campbell played Maggie. She also plays Maia on the USA series "The 4400".
9. "Playthings"- Dean mentioned to Sam that the haunted hotel had claimed two victims.

Answer: True

The realtor, Joan Edison, had been killed and Larry Williams, a mover, had taken a tumble down the stairs. Tyler found a doll that represented Larry inside a dollhouse replica of the hotel. Both Larry, and the doll, had their heads turned around and were lying at the bottom of the staircase.
10. "Playthings"- How did Grandma Rose save Tyler, and end the cursed events inside the hotel?

Answer: She sacrificed herself

Grandma's stroke prevented her from talking, but she was able to call out to Maggie psychically. Maggie was holding Tyler down in the pool, and no one could get inside the poolhouse to save her. Maggie went to Rose, and though we couldn't hear Rose's side of the conversation, we knew Maggie agreed to let everyone go if Rose stayed.

At the end of the episode, Maggie and Rose are seen jumping rope together, both as young children.
