Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character is always seen wearing a black toga?

Answer: Cato

Cato always wears a black toga, as it is his way of showing how he is in mourning for the Republic. Out of all the characters on the series, Cato is the staunchest supporter of the Republic and all that it stands for.
2. Which character was away for years fighting in Gaul while his wife was having an affair with another man?

Answer: Vorenus

While three of these characters were in Gaul (Vorenus, Pullo and Antony), only one of them is married to a woman who was having an affair. Vorenus's wife, Niobe, had an affair with Evander, her brother-in-law, while her husband was in Gaul.
3. Which of these characters has the title of Master of Horse and Tribune of Plebs?

Answer: Marc Antony

Antony is appointed Tribune of Plebs in the second episode of "Rome." As Tribune, he had the power of veto in the Senate House. However, Antony is a far better soldier than politician, as is seen in the rest of the series.
4. Which of these women was Caesar's lover and the woman that he was most devoted to?

Answer: Servilia

Servilia was also Caesar's lover, historically. Though he was married to Calpurnia, she does not figure heavily in the series. Atia was his niece and Octavia was his great niece.
5. Which of these characters was offered to Pompey as a wife?

Answer: Octavia

Caesar writes a letter to Atia, asking her to choose a woman who will be an acceptable wife for Pompey, after the death of Pompey's wife, Julia. Atia chooses Octavia, her own daughter.
6. Which of these characters is thought to be the actual father of Cleopatra's child, Caesarion?

Answer: Pullo

When Cleopatra is ready to conceive a child, she is, unfortunately, still far from Alexandria and Caesar. She engages in relations with Pullo so that she will conceive a child as soon as possible--which she will then pass off as Caesar's heir.
7. Which of these two characters commit suicide after defeat by Caesar?

Answer: Cato and Scipio

Cato and Scipio commit suicide in Utica, as it was the honorable solution. Historically, Cato stabbed himself, but was found by a slave and stitched up by a doctor. Later, he was said to have pulled the stitches out, thus completing the job.
8. Which of these characters suffers from epilepsy?

Answer: Julius Caesar

Caesar suffers from epilepsy, or, as his slave, Posca, puts it, "morbus comitialis." Octavian is the only character on the series who knows that he suffers from epilepsy. Caesar goes to great length to keep his affliction a secret, for it is a weakness that his enemies can potentially exploit.
9. Which of these characters is Atia's lover and a horse vendor?

Answer: Timon

Timon also provides protection for Atia and does a number of other dirty deeds for her, including killing Octavia's former husband, Glabius.
10. Which of these characters hired men to draw graffiti depicting Caesar and Servilia in sexual positions all over the city?

Answer: Atia

Atia hires Timon and his men to draw the graffiti, as she is resentful of the attention that Caesar bestows upon Servilia. When Calpurnia, Caesar's wife, finds out about the affair between Caesar and Servilia, she demands that it end, or else she will divorce him.
11. Which of these characters committed incest with his sister?

Answer: Octavian

Octavia seduces Octavian, wanting information to take back to Servilia. Octavian, knowing full well what she is doing, lets it happen but never loses control, refusing to give her the information she desires.
12. Whose fiance does Pullo kill?

Answer: Eirene's

Eirene is a woman rescued by Pullo early in the season. She becomes the slave of Vorenus and Niobe, because even though Pullo cares for her, he has no place to keep her. Eventually, he frees her, planning to marry her and go to the country. When he finds out that she is in love with one of the other slaves and that she wants to marry him, he kills the man, out of anger.
13. Which of these characters was Caesar's wife?

Answer: Calpurnia

Caesar was married to Calpurnia, though it was a typical political marriage, with little in the way of passion.
14. Which of these characters puts a curse on Caesar and Atia?

Answer: Servilia

Servilia curses them both after the incident with the graffiti. She is angry with Caesar for leaving her and with Atia for having the pictures drawn all over the city.
15. Which of these characters is the last man to stab Caesar?

Answer: Brutus

Cicero and Antony are not in on the plot to kill Caesar. Brutus is the last one to stab him, and obviously does so against his own personal desires, as he still has close feelings for Caesar, who was as a father to him.
