Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What item did Jake decide to buy at the auction to cheer up his father?

Answer: Willie Mays baseball card

Quark held an auction of items found in an abandoned freighter. Though originally Nog and Jake thought it was junk, Jake got excited about the baseball card and decided to buy it to cheer up Captain Sisko.
2. Quark told bidders that proceeds from the auction (minus a modest fee) would go to what organization?

Answer: Bajoran Orphans Fund

Quark also attempted to raise money for the Bajoran Orphans Fund in the second season episode "Rivals" - when Bashir and O'Brien were playing racquetball against each other.
3. How many bars of latinum did Nog have?

Answer: 5

Jake convinced Nog to use his money on the baseball card by reminding him how it was his father that helped Nog get into Starfleet. Nog kept his five bars under his bed.
4. What was the final price for Lot #48?

Answer: 10 bars

Lot #48 was the lot that contained, among other things, the Willie Mays baseball card. Jake and Nog bid against a Vedek, but then were majorly outbid in the end by an unknown man.
5. Who purchased the painting of a matador done on black velvet?

Answer: Morn

Morn was seen walking out of the auction with the painting. It was featured in a later episode, "Who Mourns for Morn?" where it was destroyed. (My dad once owned a matador painting on black velvet with the same exact frame. He got rid of it years ago, but was very excited to learn it had survived to the 24th century.)
6. Who came to the station to meet with representatives of the Dominion?

Answer: Kai Winn

The Dominion asked Kai Winn to the station to meet with Weyoun to discuss Bajor signing a non-agression treaty with the Dominion. Winn was confused and sought guidance from the Emissary, who counseled her to stall for time. Bajor did sign the treaty when the Federation decided to abandon Deep Space Nine.
7. The actor who played Dr. Giger is Brian Markinson. Which sci-fi television show has he not appeared on as a guest star?

Answer: Andromeda

Brian appeared as Lotan in "Stargate SG-1" the episode "Scorched Earth". He played the recurring role of Dr. Sam Carr in "Dark Angel". His appearances on "The X-Files" were in the episodes "Born Again" and "Folie a Deux". He never appeared on "Andromeda". Brian also guest starred on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the episode "Homeward" as Vorin and on "Star Trek: Voyager" in the episode "Faces" playing both Durst and Sulan.
8. What was Dr. Giger building while on Deep Space Nine?

Answer: cellular regeneration and entertainment center

"Do you want to die? Of course not, nobody does." The secret to immortality according to Dr. Geiger is to keep your cells from getting bored by teaching them new mitochondrial tricks. So he built the cellular regeneration and entertainment center.
9. Who was after Dr. Giger because of his work?

Answer: The Soulless Minions of Orthodoxy

Dr. Giger seemed very afraid of The Soulless Minions of Orthodoxy. They had apparently already killed one man for his work on the subject of immortality. Dr. Giger's fears were confirmed when Weyoun seized him and his work.
10. In order to get supplies needed, Jake and Nog helped out various crew members. What task did they perform for Chief O'Brien?

Answer: recalibrate EPS regulators

The EPS regulators had to be recalibrated so they wouldn't interfere with the station's artificial gravity field. Chief O'Brien had to do it because Crewman Decker was sick, but he would much rather have been kayaking.
11. What did Bashir ask for to make him happy?

Answer: Kukalaka

Kukalaka, first mentioned in the episode "The Quickening" was Bashir's teddy bear. As a child, it was his first patient. Apparently, Leeta borrowed it while they were dating and never gave it back!
12. What task did Nog perform for Worf?

Answer: filter out subharmonic distortions in his operas

Worf likes to listen to his operas very loudly on the Defiant. So Nog had to listen to them very loudly to hear the distortions.
13. Kira was giving a speech and felt it needed a little humor, so asked Jake to help. To whom was she giving the speech?

Answer: Agricultural Delegation

Jake's first joke, "I've always wondered why water reclamation is treated as such a dry subject" wasn't funny to Nog. But Kira got a great response from the Agricultural Delegates at the end, so Jake must have found some good jokes. He is a writer, after all.
14. The funniest line from the episode is Nog's "Lions, Gigers, bears" and Jake's response, "Oh my." Jake used a saying that included the word lion just before Nog's response. What words are missing from this saying? "We are going to ____ the lion in its ____."

Jake had the thought that Kai Winn had something to do with the disappearance of Dr. Giger. He decided to confront her, and told Nog they were going to "beard the lion in its den".
