Answer: "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica

The haunting lyrics and melody of "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica was the perfect accompaniment to the series of clips from season 12, culminating in Dean kneeling over Castiel's dead body after Lucifer dragged Mary into the alternate reality and Sam found Kelly's dead body and followed the blood trail to Jack.

In a smooth transition, the new season's story picked up right there, where it left off in season 12.

Answer: "Dude, how high are you?"

Jack was lost, trying to find his "father" Castiel. The sheriff was kind to him, finding him clothes and trying to help him. The sheriff's son added some comic relief, amused by the stranger and trying to find out what drug caused his behavior. The exchange between the carefree teen and Lucifer's son was fun, with Jack responding to the inquiry of what he was on with a matter-of-fact statement that he was "on a chair, on the floor, on the planet earth."

Answer: The lost Jonas brother

Dean was in a dark place at the beginning of season 13, and was convinced Jack was evil. His annoyed rant at Sam pretty much said it all. "You really think that Lucifer Junior's at Pirate Pete's Jolly Treats? That he was like, what, before I destroy the world, let me grab a bag of curly fries? . . . I'm gonna call Jody, check in, and see if she can't help us, put an APB out on the creepy satanic nudist."

Answer: Asmodeus

Asmodeus, the last Prince of Hell, appeared in Hell. His brother Azazel was killed by Dean in "All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 2". His brother Ramiel was killed by Sam in "Stuck in the Middle with You". And, his sister Dagon was killed by Castiel in "The Future".

The last Prince of Hell made quite an entrance, telling the demons that he was there "to rule until such time as Lucifer returns with his son." He continued, telling them that he would be making changes, that the "corporate lackeys of the Crowley era are being purged," and "the grand old days of fire and brimstone are back." Later in the episode, when the Winchesters found out about him, Dean said, "Hopefully, this fourth Prince of Hell is the last Kardashian in the family."

Answer: To trade her for his son

Lucifer was forcing Mary to stay with him in the alternate reality as he searched for a way out. When she told him that she knew he planned to kill her, he responded, "Why would I kill you? Oh! That's right, because I'm evil. Yeah, let me tell you a couple things, all right? You don't get to defeat the cage and defy God without having a modicum of intelligence, all right? A game plan; i.e., I don't want you dead because I need you alive . . . Your sons have my boy. So, I'm going to exchange you for my son."

Answer: The Shadim

Asmodeus attempted to free the Shadim. He explained that, a long time ago, he had freed "Hell's most savage," the Shadim, thinking he could control them. But, Lucifer locked them up again and left a scar on the Prince of Hell's face. In "The Rising Son", Asmodeus attempted to use Jack's power to free the savage creatures again.

He took on the form of Donatello and told Jack that God wanted him to help rescue a "troop of God's bravest soldiers" who were trapped in Hell. He told Jack that God wanted him to set the Shadim free, and to "be a hero." Jack started using his power to free the creatures, but the Winchesters arrived and stopped him.

Answer: what spaghetti western coughed you up?

After Lucifer asked who he was, Michael said, "Don't you know me? Brother?" Lucifer then recognized his brother Michael. Michael told him, "I killed my Lucifer. Tore him apart in the skies over Abileen." The archangels then fought, with Michael quickly getting the upper hand.

Answer: A wraith

Dean and Jody were hunting a wraith who was killing (feeding on) psychics. The brothers first encountered a wraith in "Sam, Interrupted" in season 5. In that episode, the wraith was feeding on patients in a mental hospital.

Answer: Missouri

Missouri Moseley, the psychic friend of John Winchester's, helped the brothers in "Home". Twelve years later, she called Sam, asking for their help with something that had killed her protege. Sam initially asked Jody to handle it so the brothers could focus on Jack, but Dean decided to go help Jody with the case. Once he met up with Jody and Missouri, they realized a wraith had killed her friend, and Missouri had a vision that it would kill her and attack her son and granddaughter. So, she sent Dean and Jody to protect them.

Then, she was killed by the wraith.

Answer: Castiel

Overhearing an argument between the brothers, in which Sam argued that Jack was not evil and could be saved, and Dean argued the opposite and blamed Jack for Castiel's death, Jack called out to Castiel, summoning his powers. When he did, Castiel woke up in the empty.

Answer: Shapeshifter

At first, the brothers thought they were hunting a ghost or revenant, since people were being killed by their dead loved ones. However, Sam found the remnants of flesh in the office of the therapist that had been treating the victims. The brothers then discovered that the therapist was not the killer. Instead, it was another shapeshifter that had been stalking her.

Answer: Angels and demons

The cosmic entity, looking exactly like Castiel, appeared to Castiel after the angel woke up. He told Cas that they were in "nothing but empty" and that "angels and demons, you all come here when you die." He then said that they all sleep an "endless, peaceful sleep" and let Castiel know that when Castiel woke up, it woke him, and he was very upset about being awake.

Answer: Kelly

Jack showed Mia the video of Kelly talking to him and told her he had never gotten to meet his mother. He begged her to help him. Mia obliged, appearing as Kelly. She hugged Jack, comforted him, and told him that "it doesn't matter what you are. It matters what you do." The statement worked on two levels - first, from his mother; and second, from a monster that was helping people instead of hurting them.

Answer: Jack

The shifter tied up Dean and Jack and tried to make Mia kill them. Then, he saw Sam heading toward the house and prepared to shoot him when he came through the door. Dean and Mia tried to warn Sam, but he knocked out Dean and covered Mia's mouth. Sam opened the door, and as the shapeshifter shot at him, Jack tapped his powers, throwing the monster back and diverting the bullet from Sam. Sam was then able to draw his gun and shoot the shifter.

Afterward, Dean told Jack he did good, and apologized to Sam, admitting that he needed his brother to keep the faith for both of them, because he didn't believe in anything at that point.

Answer: False

The celestial entity was forced to be awake if Castiel was awake in the empty. He could not stand it, and he needed Castiel to go back to sleep. He tried to coax Castiel to go back to sleep. He tried torturing him by showing him his past mistakes. He tried beating him up. Nothing worked. Castiel told him, "You can prance, and you can preen, and you can scream and yell, and remind me of my failings, but somehow, I'm awake and I will stay awake and I will keep you awake, until we both go insane. I will fight you and fight you and fight you forever, for eternity. . . Release me! Release me!" Finally, the celestial entity released him and sent him back to earth.
