Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season premiere episode entitled "Greatest of the Greats", the host, Jeff Probst introduced the 20 participants of the 40th season of "Survivor". To celebrate the show's 20th anniversary, all the returning players were winners from past seasons. Which of the following castaways was NOT one of the contestants of "Survivor: Winners at War"?

Answer: Richard Hatch, winner of "Survivor: Borneo" (2000)

Richard Hatch, winner of the very first season of "Survivor", "Survivor: Borneo" (2000), also participated in "Survivor: All-Stars" (2004).

John Cochran, winner of "Survivor: Caramoan" (2013) turned down the offer to return to the show. Earl Cole, winner of "Survivor: Fiji" (2007) also declined the offer due to family commitment.

Natalie and Amber were the first and second castaways to be eliminated from the game, respectively. Danni was voted out of the game in the second episode.
2. In "Greatest of the Greats", Jeff briefed the castaways the format of the game. Fire tokens were introduced, where players could collect and use them to trade for luxury items or buy advantages during challenges. The Edge of Extinction, first introduced in "Survivor: Edge of Extinction" (2019), was in play, where eliminated players could still return to the game. In addition, Jeff announced that the winner of the 40th season of the show would receive a large sum of prize money. How much was it?

Answer: Two million dollars

Each of the winners from the past 39 seasons received one million dollars. The prize money was doubled to two million dollars for the show's 40th season, in which "Survivor" commemorated its 20th anniversary.

The logo used for "Survivor: Winners at War" was the first "Survivor" logo to feature the season number on it.
3. The title of the second episode, "It's Like a Survivor Economy", was a reference to the use of fire tokens in the game. Players on the Edge of Extinction could sell advantages to players who were still in the game for some fire tokens. In addition, whenever someone was voted out at Tribal Council, the eliminated player needed to bequeath his or her fire tokens to any player _______.

Answer: who was still in the game

The introduction of fire tokens was a great twist in the 40th season of "Survivor". Each player was given a fire token at the beginning of the game. Natalie, who was the first castaway to be voted out at Tribal Council, bequeathed her fire token to Jeremy. The second player to be voted out of the game, Amber, gave her fire token to her husband, Rob. Danni bequeathed her fire token to Denise in episode two upon her elimination at Tribal Council.

Natalie (on the Edge of Extinction) also sold Jeremy (who was still in the game) a "safety without power" advantage, for a fire token. The advantage enabled a player to return to his or her camp before the votes were cast at Tribal Council, thus ensuring that the player would not be eliminated from the game.
4. In "It's Like a Survivor Economy", Denise from the Sele tribe and Kim from the Dakal tribe found their respective Hidden Immunity Idol at their campsite. The idols that they found, however, were split into two halves. What must they do with the other half of the idols before sundown?

Answer: Give to another tribemate

The twist was that the other half of the Hidden Immunity Idol needed to be given to another tribemate before sundown. The two halves of the idol could later be combined again to be used at Tribal Council.

Denise gave half of the idol to Adam, whereas Kim gave hers to Sophie.
5. In the third episode entitled "Out for Blood", Natalie, on the Edge of Extinction, sold a "vote steal advantage" to Sarah from the Dakal tribe. However, Sarah needed to locate the advantage herself. Where was the "vote steal advantage" hidden?

Answer: Sele's torches

The "vote steal advantage" was hidden in Sele's torches. Sarah enlisted the help of Tony in her mission to locate the hidden "vote steal advantage" at Sele's campsite. Both Sarah and Tony were police officers.
6. In "Out for Blood", the Sele tribe was literally just a few seconds behind the Dakal tribe when completing the tree puzzle. Having lost the immunity challenge in a tight race, Sele was sent to Tribal Council. Which player, who was the winner of "Survivor: Africa" (2001), was voted out at Tribal Council?

Answer: Ethan

At Sele's Tribal Council, Ethan received four votes, from Ben, Denise, Jeremy, and Michele. Adam received three, from Ethan, Parvati, and Rob. Parvati received one vote from Adam.

The "Along the Watchtower" immunity challenge was previously played in "Survivor: Ghost Island" (2018).
7. In the fourth episode entitled "I Like Revenge", the four castaways (Natalie, Amber, Danni, and Ethan) who were sent to the Edge of Extinction were given a chance to earn a fire token each by completing a herculean task -- they were required to transport twenty logs, one at a time, from the top of the mountain to their campsite. Who completed the task?

Answer: Natalie, Amber, Danni, and Ethan

Natalie was the first castaway to complete the task. Ethan, who was a marathon runner and a cancer survivor, struggled and needed medical attention. Natalie, Amber, and Danni, despite having completed their tasks, accompanied Ethan for his final trip up to the mountain and back to the campsite, giving him moral support. Ethan commented that it was one of the most touching and memorable moments in his life.
8. In "I Like Revenge", part of the combined reward/immunity challenge required players to retrieve three keys from a platform. After a few failed attempts, Adam from the Sele tribe managed to collect all the three keys required. Rob and Michele from the Sele tribe then worked on the puzzle, hoping to catch up with Nick and Sarah from the Dakal tribe. What was the outcome of the immunity challenge?

Answer: Sele won

The same "Beyond the Wheel" immunity challenge was featured in "Survivor: David vs Goliath" (2018), where Nick also participated in the same challenge and won. Despite the substantial lead that the Dakal tribe had, Nick and Sarah (Dakal) needed to disassemble their puzzle pieces, paving ways for Rob and Michele (Sele) to catch up and eventually win the challenge.
9. In the fifth episode entitled "The Buddy System on Steroids", Jeff made the shocking announcement that there would be a Tribe Switch. The remaining 15 castaways were grouped into three tribes of five. In addition to the existing Dakal and Sele tribes, what was the name given to the third new tribe?

Answer: Yara

After the Tribe Switch, the three tribes were Dakal (Denise, Jeremy, Kim, Sandra, and Tony), Sele (Michele, Nick, Parvati, Wendell, and Yul), and Yara (Adam, Ben, Rob, Sarah, and Sophie).

Lairo, Vokai, and Lumuwaku were the names of the tribes in "Survivor: Island of the Idols" (2019).
10. In "The Buddy System on Steroids", Rob, who was considered the Godfather of "Survivor", was blindsided and voted out of the game at Tribal Council. He bequeathed his two fire tokens to his close ally, who was also the winner of "Survivor: Micronesia - Fans vs. Favorites" (2008), and the runner-up of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" (2010). Who was the player?

Answer: Parvati

Parvati also participated in "Survivor: Cook Islands" (2006), where she placed sixth. Previously, Rob received a fire token from his wife, Amber, who was the second player to be voted out of the game.
