1. Starsky

Answer: Hutch

Starsky and Hutch were a pair of very cool detectives working in California. Starsky was played by Paul Michael Glaser and Hutch by David Soul. The series 'Starsky and Hutch' ran from 1975-1979 and was very popular.
2. Scott

Answer: Bailey

Janet Scott and Rachel Bailey are a pair of detectives working in the Manchester area of the U.K. Scott, played by Lesley Sharp, is married with children and Bailey, played by Suranne Jones, is single and a far more wild type of character. The series 'Scott and Bailey' tell stories about their private as well as professional lives,
3. Morse

Answer: Lewis

In the excellent series 'Morse' Detective Inspector Morse, played by John Thaw, is a former student at Oxford University, and works within the Oxford area. His assistant sergeant Lewis is a Geordie i.e. comes from the north east of England. He is a family man and a very much more down to earth character than Morse.
4. Cagney

Answer: Lacey

These two ladies were detectives in New York. The series 'Cagney and Lacey' was ground breaking in that it showed them as real women and not female men. Christine Cagney, who was played by Sharon Gless, was a single career woman whereas Mary Beth Lacey, played by Tyne Daley, although an excellent detective, was married with children and they came first with her.
5. Maigret

Answer: Lucas

The series 'Maigret' was based on the books by Georges Simenon and was with the Paris police force. His right hand man was Lucas, but not much of Lucas' personality was revealed. Maigret worked on cases in the seamier side of Paris, and this was something new for British viewers. Rupert Davies played Maigret in the 1950s in a very successful BBC series.

More recently both Michael Gambon and Rowan Atkinson have taken the role.
6. Dalziel

Answer: Pascoe

In the programme 'Dalziel and Pascoe' Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascoe are Yorkshire detectives, based on the novels of Reginald Hill. Dalziel, ably played by the late Warren Clarke, is the brash and uncouth one, always being insensitive and saying the wrong thing.

His partner Pascoe, played by Colin Buchanan, is polite, sensitive and calm. Despite their differences they are good friends.
7. Poirot

Answer: Hastings

In the series 'Poirot' Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective working in England in the 1930s, and was created by Agatha Christie. He is clever, courteous and vain. His helper Captain Hastings on the other hand is rather slow witted, although he is also very courteous. The television series was greatly enhanced by the 1930s clothing and décor.
8. Foyle

Answer: Sam

Chief Inspector Christopher Foyle is a retired police officer who is called back to duty during the Second World War, and the programme is called 'Foyle's War'. Samantha Stewart is his driver and is often involved in investigating the cases, not always with Foyle's approval. Foyle is played by Michael Kitchen and Sam by Honeysuckle Weekes.
9. Gently

Answer: Bacchus

This series called 'Inspector George Gently' is set in the north east of England in 1960s. George Gently is a true gentleman, and clashes with his sergeant John Bacchus who is brash and insensitive. Gently is played by Martin Shaw and Bacchus by Lee Ingleby.
10. Lynley

Answer: Havers

In the 'Inspector Lynley Mysteries' Lynley is an English aristocrat, and his Sergeant, Barbara Havers, is working class. The stories are about their private lives as well as solving crimes, and Lynley has a rather troubled marriage. There is always a feeling that perhaps he and Havers should be together.
