Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The starting line for this race was held at what famous Australian landmark?

Answer: Uluru

For the first time on "The Amazing Race", two nations would go head-to-head to compete to win. Five teams from Australia and five teams from New Zealand gathered at the starting line, deep in the Australian Outback at the world-famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) to begin their journey around the globe. Notably, the two nations were split at the starting line to indicate a divide between the racing nations.

The single winning team would win the $250,000 prize. Grant gave the word and the race was on.
2. Which country won the start-of-race tug of war challenge?

Answer: New Zealand

While Grant informed the teams that they could start the race on his go-ahead, they did not immediately head to the clues waiting on top of their backpacks. At the starting line, the teams were directed to a nearby game of tug of war; the Aussies stood on one side and the Kiwis on the other.

The winning team was the one to pull the opposing team's flag over the line, and they would get a head start of ten minutes heading out from the starting line. Ultimately, the New Zealand teams won.
3. In Leg 1, teams flew to what New Zealand city?

Answer: Christchurch

After the tug of war, teams needed to fly to Christchurch, New Zealand (via Sydney) on one of two flights and then take a taxi to the Cardboard Cathedral. Upon their arrival they could pull a departure time ticket from a table inside leaving at 8:00am, 8:15am, or 8:30am.

The following morning, teams were told to locate the marked cars nearby and drive themselves to the Rangitata River in Geraldine to find a rafting center, one hundred fifty kilometers south. After completing a grade five rapid course they would receive half of a "Lord of the Rings-esque" ring and their next clue.
4. During the Road Block in Leg 1 (in New Zealand), team members needed to drive which vehicle?

Answer: Tractor

Completing their river rapid course, teams were instructed to drive twenty-one kilometers to Rata Peaks Station to find their first Road Block of the race. There, one member of each team needed to get 'better traction'. The selected member needed to use a tractor to pass through a slalom course and collect four bales of hay, reversing through to place it in a marked spot.

When this was done, they could search a sheep pen to find the matching half of their ring around the collar of a sheep. Murray, Carla, Emily, Daniel, Todd, Jesse, Aston, Jarrod, Tiharna, and Tyson completed this task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Leg 1 (in New Zealand)?

Answer: Inga and Tiharna

After the Road Block, teams ended up connecting their ring pieces and being directed to the first Pit Stop of the race, a valley directly west in the Southern Alps. Proceeding by car and then on foot, teams could step on the mat to avoid the first elimination. John and Murray were the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop winning two Virgin Australia tickets to and from Los Angeles.

In addition they ended up collecting two Express Passes-- one for themselves (to use before the end of Leg 5) and one for another team (to give out before the end of Leg 3).

In the end, Inga and Tiharna were the last team to arrive, having forgotten the first half of their ring at the river rafting site and were forced to go back to get it. They were eliminated.
6. In Leg 2, teams flew to what Southeast Asian nation?

Answer: Cambodia

Commencing Leg 2 early in the morning, the remaining nine teams were told to head tot he Christchurch International Airport to catch a flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, home of Angkor Wat. Lead team John and Murray ended up sleeping through their Pit Start time by one hour, pushing them back in the pack. Nonetheless, all teams ended up arriving in Cambodia at the same time despite there being two different flights (one via Melbourne and one via Sydney). Upon arrival, teams had to visit the Old Market for their next task.
7. In Leg 2, what delicacy were teams forced to eat?

Answer: Tarantulas

Upon arriving at Siem Reap's Old Market, teams were able to indulge and sate their hunger upon reaching a stall on Penny Lane. For this task, the members of each team had to split a plate of seven freshly fried tarantulas. Completion of this task allowed teams to carry on by hiring a tuk-tuk and traveling to Angkor Wat. To gain entry, the teams needed to purchase entry tickets at a marked booth at which they would receive a step counter provided by the attendant to be worn for the remainder of the second leg.
8. How many teams completed the 'zen master' Road Block task in Leg 2?

Answer: Seven

Arriving at Angkor Wat, teams located their Road Block clue which required that one team member 'be a zen master'. For this task, the selected team member needed to head into Angkor Wat proper to count the monks wearing yellow and red prayer beads. Then, they had to carry an offering to the top of the temple and hand it off to one of two monks.

They would then give their answer to one of the two monks; the correct answer to the correct monk would result in another clue while the correct answer to the wrong monk or the wrong answer to either monk would not. Sally, Ashleigh, Ryan, Elizabeth, Jesse, Jono, Christie, and Hereni completed this task, correctly guessing twenty-six with the left monk. John and Murray did not complete the Road Block, instead opting to use the Express Pass.
9. In the 'Shoot' Detour task in Leg 2, what did teams have to shoot?

Answer: Pool

After the Road Block, teams were told to take a tuk-tuk to Tjoup Snae Restaurant in Siem Reap. Upon arriving, both members needed to record the readings on their digital step counters before receiving their next clue-- the Detour. For this task, teams visited Tonlé Sap to complete either 'Shrimp' or 'Shoot'.

In 'Shrimp', teams needed to harvest 750g of shrimp while in 'Shoot', teams had to level a pool table and sink five balls against a local player in a floating village. Emily and Jono completed 'Shrimp' while John and Murray, Aston and Christie, Sally and Tyson, Daniel and Ryan, Cat and Jesse, Ashleigh and Jarrod, Elizabeth and Todd, and Carla and Hereni completed 'Shoot'.
10. Which team was the second to be eliminated from the race (in Leg 2)?

Answer: Elizabeth and Todd

After the Detour, teams needed to make their way to the next Pit Stop, Baphuon Temple, where one team would be eliminated. Upon arriving first, John and Murray neglected to pay their tuk-tuk driver and were unable to check in. As such, Emily and Jono were able to slide into the lead position, winning themselves a $10,000 flight voucher for Virgin Australia and two Frequent Flyer cards. Because their step counters were the closest together, Daniel and Ryan won themselves a thirty minute time credit into the next leg of the race.

In the end, Elizabeth and Todd were the last to arrive and only eight teams were able to continue.
