Starting Leg 5, six teams departed from their fourth Pit Stop in the middle of the Na'an Kuse Wildlife Sanctuary in Windhoek, Namibia and made their way to the airport, catching the next flight fourteen thousand miles northbound to Saint Petersburg, Russia. Upon their arrival, they had to make their way by taxi to the Battleship Aurora docked on the Neva River.

The Road Block clue waited for them on shore in front of the cruiser.

Answer: Semaphore

Arriving at the Battleship Aurora early in the morning, teams located their Road Block clue waiting for them. For this task, one member of each team needed to 'crack the code', and in doing so, learn how to read semaphore flag signals. The task involved properly identifying the message being given, but to do so, participants had to figure out the Cyrillic letters and write them out. Murray, Jarrod, Hereni, Ryan, Sally, and Cat completed this task, determining their message.

They received a photo of their next destination as a result.

Following their photo, teams ended up reaching their next clue box in front of Nevsky Prospekt. This ended up leading them to the Detour task, a choice between 'Cossack' and 'Coat Rack', both of which took them to Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace. In 'Cossack', teams had to perform a traditional folk dance to the approval of an instructor while in 'Coat Rack', teams had to search for a missing coat tag on a ring and then, subsequently, search for the missing tag in a coat check room. Ashleigh and Jarrod, and Carla and Hereni completed 'Cossack'; Sally and Tyson, Daniel and Ryan, Cat and Jesse, and John and Murray completed 'Coat Rack'.

Completing the Detour, teams were instructed to make their way to the Taleon Imperial Hotel in Saint Petersburg where they were met with the race's sole Intersection. Here, teams had to pair up together to complete a task in the Imperial Ballroom. For this, one member of each team needed to enter a laser-filled vault together to retrieve a guarded Fabrege egg.

When they were able to maneuver themselves through the room to collect the item awaiting them, they could continue on. Daniel and Ryan paired with Sally and Tyson, John and Murray paired with Ashleigh and Jarrod, and Carla and Hereni paired with Cat and Jesse.

Completing the intersected task at the Imperial Ballroom, teams found their final clue of the leg in their jewelled eggs sending them to their next Pit Stop, the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. The first team to arrive was John and Murray who took their third victory of the race, this time taking with them a reward that would affect them going into the sixth leg-- first class train tickets for themselves and the team of their choice wherever they would go next. Cat and Jesse arrived in last, but all of the teams were told to keep racing-- there was no rest going into Leg 6 and no elimination.

Teams arriving at the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood were told to continue racing immediately, this time taking the Trans-Siberian Express to the city of Kostroma. Upon their arrival, teams needed to locate the Museum of Wooden Architecture to find their next clue. Because all teams reached the train station at the same time of day, all six remaining pairs arrived at the same time in Kostroma. John and Murray used their reward to allow Ashleigh and Jarrod to share first class. Arriving at the museum, teams had a unique nation versus nation task in which the Aussie teams battled against the Kiwi teams. Each team had to choose a Babushka doll and, working as three teams of two, find all of the dolls in each set hidden in five wooden houses.

When the groups collectively returned the three sets they could all continue racing. The Aussie trio won this one.

After the nation vs. nation task, teams headed onward to Kostroma's Town Square to find their Detour clues awaiting. For this task, teams chose between 'Boil' and 'Build'. In 'Boil', teams needed to fill an outdoor kettle basin with water and light a fire beneath it.

When both team members bathed in their basin they would receive their next clue. In 'Build', teams had to stack a heap of firewood using a traditional stacking method. Daniel and Ryan, Ashleigh and Jarrod, and Sally and Tyson completed 'Boil' while John and Murray, Carla and Hereni, and Cat and Jesse did 'Build'.

Completing their Detour task, teams were handed the Road Block instructions for this leg. For this challenge, one member of each team was asked 'who wants to go to the dogs?' When it was decided, Daniel, Ashleigh, Tyson, Jesse, Carla, and John had to select a dogsled and drive it around a marked slalom course in the forests around Kostroma.

When this was done, they would receive the clue directing them to the race's sixth Pit Stop in the city.

Answer: John and Murray

After the Road Block, teams were told to make their way back into Kostroma to find the Ipatiev Monastery and, from there, they could proceed on foot to their sixth Pit Stop on the ice-covered Volga River. The first team to check in here, Daniel and Ryan, ended up winning a Virgin Holiday vacation package to Phuket, Thailand.

They also ended up winning the Salvage Pass, designed to allow them to either save the team arriving last in Leg 6 from elimination or to give them a sixty minute head start going into Leg 7. John and Murray ended up arriving in last.

Answer: No

Daniel and Ryan, who obtained the Salvage Pass, opted not to use it to save perhaps the strongest competition in the game until that point. As a result, John and Murray became the fifth team eliminated from the race while Daniel and Ryan were able to use an hour head start going into Leg 7.

At the Pit Stop, Tyson also decided to propose to Sally (it being their fourth anniversary); she said yes.
