Doctor Who - Series 7 Trivia Questions

1. Many actors had been cast as the Doctor in its first fifty years. Which one did not feature in new footage in the anniversary special?

From Quiz
The Doctor is Fifty

Answer: William Hartnell

William Hartnell was the one who started it all off as the first Doctor. Unfortunately, he passed away before the fiftieth anniversary. Matt Smith played the eleventh Doctor, who was the 'current' Doctor at the time. David Tennant returned to play the tenth Doctor, and Peter Capaldi made a momentary appearance as the future twelfth Doctor. John Hurt played the War Doctor, and Tom Baker (who played the fourth Doctor) appeared as the museum curator at the end of the episode. All of the other actors who had played the Doctor before 2013 appeared in the episode in archive footage, but not in new material. Paul McGann featured in a short prequel to the episode. As the eighth Doctor, he regenerated into the War Doctor. Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy (who have also played the Doctor) appeared in the comedy spoof 'The Five(ish) Doctors', which also featured past and present cast and crew as parodies of themselves.

2. While all sorts of monsters threaten the Doctor in this episode, who are the first to try and kill him?

From Quiz The Time of the Doctor

Answer: Daleks

It is the Daleks. The Doctor demonstrates that showing up on a Dalek ship waving around a Dalek eyestalk is a bad idea, as is carrying a Cyber head onto a Cyberman ship. The Weeping Angels grab Clara on the surface of Trenzalore and she escapes by virtue of being naked. The Sontarans are quickly dispatched by the Church of the Papal Mainframe, which actually apologizes for killing them.

3. What is Clara riding when she enters the TARDIS at the start of "The Day of the Doctor"?

From Quiz The Day of the Doctor

Answer: Motorcyle

Clara rides her motorcycle straight into the TARDIS, and even closes the door by snapping her fingers. Clara has become a teacher since we last saw her, and the Doctor is brushing up on his quantum mechanics. The horse does not show up until later. The motorcycle is apparently the same one the Doctor rides in "The Bells of Saint John" (2013).

4. What is the name of the young woman piloting the spacecraft?

From Quiz The Night of the Doctor

Answer: Cass

Emma Campbell-Jones played Cass. Although we only see her for about two minutes, we do learn that she became a pilot to see the universe. This is Emma's second appearance in the "Doctor Who" universe - she was Doctor Kent, one of the scientists who was killed in "The Wedding of River Song." Campbell-Jones is half-English, half-Scottish, and began acting in television in 2005.

5. What long-time enemy is the Doctor fighting in "Nightmare in Silver"?

From Quiz Nightmare in Silver

Answer: Cybermen

"Nightmare in Silver" marks the 15th time the Doctor has encountered the Cybermen. "The Tenth Planet" (1966), which was William Hartnell's last episode as the Doctor, was the first appearance of the Cybermen. They come from the planet Mondas, where they converted themselves into cybernetic beings. The Cybermen have continually evolved over the course of the series. In this episode, they are much faster and can adapt much more quickly. The title could be a reference to "Silver Nemesis", which featured the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy).

6. What distinguished British actress played Mrs Gillyflower?

From Quiz The Crimson Horror

Answer: Diana Rigg

Diana Rigg has been a fanboy favorite since the 1960s, when she played ultra-hip super-agent Emma Peel on "The Avengers". Rigg is also a Bond girl, having played James Bond's wife in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". More recently, she has appeared in "Game of Thrones" as The Queen of Thrones. Jean Marsh is probably best known for her work in "Upstairs, Downstairs" but she has deep connections to "Doctor Who". Marsh was married to Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, from 1955 to 1960, and appeared as Sara Kingdom in "The Daleks' Masterplan". Judi Dench played M, James Bond's boss, in seven films from 1995 to 2012. Helen Mirren is quite famous for playing queens, including winning an Academy Award for her portrayal of Elizabeth I. Rigg, Dench and Mirren are all Dames of the British Empire, while Marsh is only an OBE.

7. What is the name of the salvage company that illegally grabs the TARDIS?

From Quiz The Center of the TARDIS

Answer: Van Baalen

The Van Baalen brothers run a ramshackle salvage operation. They illegally take the TARDIS with a magno-grab beam, which causes so much damage the engine explodes. Most of the episode focuses on the Doctor trying to rescue Clara and fix the TARDIS. The Doctor did meet Vincent Van Gogh in "Vincent and the Doctor". Van Helsing is the vampire hunter made famous in "Dracula". There is Fan Fiction where the Doctor meets him.

8. The Doctor and his companions are frequently encountering supernatural beings. What kind of supernatural being is the subject of "Hide"?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "Hide"

Answer: A ghost

"Hide" is an old-fashioned ghost story, although the ghost turns out to be unlike what any of them expected. It features spectral images, scary noises, mysterious writing, and being "Doctor Who" there is quite a lot of running. The 11th Doctor encounters alien vampires in "Vampires of Venice" and the 10th Doctor fights alien witches in "The Shakespeare Code".

9. In the "Doctor Who" episode "Cold War," what part of the Cold War era do the Doctor and Clara find themselves in?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "Cold War"

Answer: A nuclear submarine in 1983

"Cold War" takes place on a nuclear submarine which is stranded under the North Pole with an alien warrior on board. The Doctor confronts an Ice Warrior, one of his former enemies, who has been freed from the ice after 5000 years. 1983 was an extremely tense period of the Cold War, as Ronald Reagan was referring to the Soviet Union as an "Evil Empire." During the 1980s, several computer mishaps came within minutes of starting World War III.

10. In the "Doctor Who" episode "The Rings of Akhaten", what did the title refer to?

From Quiz The Rings of Akhaten

Answer: an asteroid belt

The rings were an asteroid belt around the planet Akhaten. The Doctor took Clara Oswald there to show her a festival featuring a wide variety of aliens and some beautiful singing. They eventually wound up facing off against a soul-sucking mummy and an enormous god-like monster.

11. In "The Bells of St John" (2013), Jenna Louise Coleman is introduced as the new companion for the Doctor. What is her character's name?

From Quiz The Bells of Saint John

Answer: Clara

Clara Oswin Oswald. This is the third time the Doctor has encountered Clara: She played a young woman who had been transformed into a Dalek in "Asylum of the Daleks" (2012) and a Victorian era nanny in "The Snowmen". (2012) Jasmine was Jenna Louise Coleman's character of the British soap opera "Emmerdale" from 2005 to 2009. Annie was Coleman's character in the 2012 miniseries "Titanic".

12. There are many nods to the history of 'Doctor Who' in 'The Day of the Doctor'. At the very beginning of the episode, Clara was working at the same school that the Doctor's granddaughter, Susan, went to way back in 1963. What was it called?

From Quiz The Doctor is Fifty

Answer: Coal Hill School

The episode opened with a shot of a sign for I.M. Foreman's scrapyard, which was where the Doctor parked the TARDIS in 'An Unearthly Child'. Clara worked at Coal Hill School, which was where Susan went to school in the first episode, and where Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton worked. In 'The Day of the Doctor', the sign outside the gate read 'Chairman of the governors: I. Chesterton'. Coal Hill was the main setting of the 'Doctor Who' spin-off series, 'Class', in 2016.

13. What does the Doctor name the Cyberman head he carries around?

From Quiz The Time of the Doctor

Answer: Handles

Handles is quite a useful companion, providing all sorts of information. He breaks down after roughly 300 years.

14. "The Day of the Doctor" begins much as "The Eleventh Hour" did, with the Doctor hanging onto the TARDIS for dear life as it flies over London. Where does the UNIT helicopter set down the Doctor?

From Quiz The Day of the Doctor

Answer: Trafalgar Square

The Doctor lands in Trafalgar Square after flying past the statue of Lord Nelson. The Square has been open since 1844, and is one of London's most important public spaces. It is the site of both political protests and public celebrations. It is also the home of the National Gallery of Art, which plays an important role in "The Day of the Doctor." Leicester Square is a few blocks North, while the palace is directly southwest along The Mall. The Tower of London is about a mile east, and also plays a key role in this episode.

15. Which incarnation of the Doctor shows up to rescue the pilot on the crashing space ship?

From Quiz The Night of the Doctor

Answer: The Eighth

Paul McGann, who played the Doctor in the 1996 television movie, returns to the role and picks up where he left off. Coincidentally, the video was released on November 14, McGann's 54th birthday. Since the film, McGann has done quite a few Big Finish audio stories playing the Eighth Doctor. In a bizarre Time Lord worthy twist, despite appearing on screen only twice, thanks to the novels and audio stories, by 2012 the Eighth Doctor had actually appeared in more stories than any of the first 11 incarnations.

16. What is Clara attempting to make in the kitchen?

From Quiz The Name of the Doctor

Answer: Souffle

Clara is trying to be "souffle girl." This is not the first time she has tried to make a souffle. She was making one in "Asylum of the Daleks" to celebrate her Mother's birthday. Souffles are made with egg yolks and whites, and can be either savory or sweet. Yorkshire Pudding is a batter pudding usually served with meat. In "The Power of Three" the Doctor claims to have invented Yorkshire Pudding. Parkin is oatmeal and treacle cake from Yorkshire. Zabaglione is an Italian dessert made with egg yolks and sugar. And remember, "The souffle isn't the souffle. The souffle is the recipe."

17. What are the names of the children that Clara is the nanny for?

From Quiz Nightmare in Silver

Answer: Angie and Artie

Angie and Artie Maitland are Clara's charges. They are in the TARDIS because they blackmail Clara into it after learning the secret about her traveling with the Doctor. They are played by Eve de Leon Allen (Angie) and Kassius Carey Johnson (Artie). While most reviews of the episode were positive, reviews of the child actors were less generous. Lily and Cyril are the children from the 2011 Christmas Special, "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe". Josh and Ella are Donna's imaginary children from "Forest of the Dead".

18. What is the setting for "The Crimson Horror"?

From Quiz The Crimson Horror

Answer: Yorkshire in 1893

The story is set in Yorkshire in 1893. The Doctor's return to Victorian England is part of his quest to unravel the mystery that is Clara Oswald. London in 1892 is the setting for "The Snowmen", the 2012 Christmas Special which is the last time we saw the Paternoster gang: Madame Vastra the Silurian, Jenny Flint and Strax the Sontaran. We first meet them in "A Good Man Goes to War".London 1953 is the setting for "The Idiot's Lantern" a season two episode set around the coronation of Elizabeth II. The episode "Tooth and Claw" where the Tenth Doctor and Rose meet Queen Victoria, is set in Scotland 1879. Throughout season seven, there have been references to past Doctors. It continues in "Crimson Horror" with the Doctor mentioning "A gobby Australian he had to get back to Heathrow Airport," a clear reference to Tegan Jovanka, a companion of the Fifth Doctor. The Doctor also says "Brave heart" to Clara, a phrase the Fifth Doctor often used with Tegan. There are also several Fourth Doctor references. The using salt to fight evil reference links to "Image of the Fendahl" and the Romani superstition about seeing things in the eyes of dead people is brought up in "The Ark in Space".

19. What is the name of the 'android' in "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS"?

From Quiz The Center of the TARDIS

Answer: Tricky

There were three Van Baalen brothers: Gregor (Ashley Walters), Bram (Mark Liver), and Tricky (Jahvel Hall). Tricky has been convinced by his brothers that he is an android. In a dramatic scene, the Doctor forces Gregor to tell Tricky the truth: he is actually human. Kamelion is a shape shifting android who is a companion of the Fifth Doctor in 1983 and 1984. The robot was incredibly difficult to operate, and was quickly written out of the show.

20. What is the setting for most of the "Doctor Who" episode "Hide"?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "Hide"

Answer: A spooky mansion, 1974

Most of "Hide" is set in Caliburn House, a spooky mansion. According to Alec Palmer (Dougray Scott) at the start, the date is November 25, 1974. The Doctor does take the TARDIS to the start of the Earth, but is there for only a brief period. There are several scenes inside the TARDIS, including a great dialogue between the Doctor and Clara about how the Doctor views humanity. The mansion scenes were shot at Tyntesfield, a National Trust property in Wraxall, North Somerset. The estate dates back to the 1500s, but the mansion was built in the 1860s.

21. What planet was the Ice Warrior from?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "Cold War"

Answer: Mars

As the Doctor notes in a rapid-fire monologue, the Ice Warriors are natives of Mars. Peladon is a planet visited by the third Doctor, where he had several confrontations with the Ice Warriors. Skaro is the home planet of the Daleks. Metebelis 3 was a favorite planet of the third Doctor, where almost everything was blue. When the Doctor says that he and the Ice Warriors go "way, way back" he is telling the truth. They made their first appearance in the 1967 series "The Ice Warriors." The second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) would fight the Ice Warriors again in "The Seeds of Death" (1969) and "The War Games" (1969). The third Doctor (John Pertwee) would fight the Ice Warriors in "The Curse of Peladon" (1972) and "The Monster of Peladon" (1974).

22. How did Clara's parents meet?

From Quiz The Rings of Akhaten

Answer: She saved him from a speeding car

23. Where do we find the Doctor at the beginning of the episode?

From Quiz The Bells of Saint John

Answer: A 13th century monastery

The Doctor is with a group of monks, and tells Clara that the year is 1207 when she calls the outside telephone on the TARDIS. The title of the episode actually refers to the telephone, and the St John's Ambulance emblem on the door of the TARDIS. The Doctor was in 1580 Venice in "The Vampires of Venice" (2010), and 1890 France in "Vincent and the Doctor" (2010). The 22nd century monastery was in "The Rebel Flesh" (2011) and "The Almost People" (2011).

24. Thanks to UNIT, the TARDIS was picked up and carried away by helicopter. At which London landmark did the Doctor first meet Kate Stewart and the rest of UNIT?

From Quiz The Doctor is Fifty

Answer: The National Gallery

Kate Stewart showed the Doctor a very special painting. It was a 3D Time Lord work of art created with a stasis cube. The first painting that the Doctor saw was of Gallifrey during the Time War. He was then taken to the Undergallery where there were some more stasis cube pictures. However, there was a problem with the paintings: the figures were missing.

25. What is the name of the high priestess who leads the Church of the Papal Mainframe?

From Quiz The Time of the Doctor

Answer: Tasha Lem

Tasha Lem is the Mother Superior of the Papal Mainframe. She comes to an alliance with the Doctor to prevent the renewal of the Time War should Gallifrey return. Lem is portrayed by Orla Brady, an Irish actress probably best known for her work on the US Science Fiction series "Fringe". Tasha Yar is a character in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" played by Denise Crosby. Tasha Smith is an actress who frequently appears in Tyler Perry projects. Tasha Tilberg is a Canadian fashion model.

26. What words does the War Doctor blast into the wall with a laser gun?

From Quiz The Day of the Doctor

Answer: No More

"No More" is a key theme to "The Day of the Doctor." As he is wandering through the desert, the War Doctor (John Hurt) gives a dramatic speech warning the Time Lords and Daleks about "No More" and how we will act to end the war. The interface for the Moment actually teases the War Doctor about his pomposity.

27. What city is Strax in when we see him brawling?

From Quiz The Name of the Doctor

Answer: Glasgow

The episode sees the return of the Paternoster Gang: Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax. When they are kidnapped, the Doctor goes to rescue them. Strax has some great lines in "Name of the Doctor" and most of the best laugh lines. Strax apologizes to his Scottish companion for not being able to kill him, and then has the Scot hit him over the head with a shovel. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. In 1893, it was one of the most important cities in the British Empire, a major shipping center. Edinburgh is second, Aberdeen is third and Paisley is fifth.

28. Where does most of "Nightmare in Silver" take place?

From Quiz Nightmare in Silver

Answer: Amusement park

The Doctor, Clara and the kids find themselves at Hedgewick's Amusement Park - naturally, it is a few years after the park has closed down. Much of the episode takes place inside Natty Longshore's Comical Castle, which has a moat and drawbridge.

29. What is the name of the company town run by Mrs Gillyflower?

From Quiz The Crimson Horror

Answer: Sweetville

Sweetville is the name of the factory town, named after the mysterious partner of Mrs. Gillyflower. The town has been designed for "the fittest and most beautiful" people. This makes Jenny Flint the logical person to infiltrate. Mrs Gillyflower has been preserving the "fit and beautiful" people for a very sinister purpose. The other places are all real British company towns. Port Sunlight, established in Cheshire in 1888, was built for employees of Lever Brothers. Bourneville, which was started near Birmingham in 1895, was established by George and Richard Cadbury, the chocolate tycoons. Creswell was built by the Bolsover mining corporation in 1896.

30. What is the name of the psychic assistant?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "Hide"

Answer: Emma

Emma Grayling is played by Jessica Raine. Towards the end, it turns out she is the real reason the Doctor has come to 1974 - to find out more about Clara Oswald. Emma is in love with Alec Palmer, and by the end of the episode, it appears they will get together. Emma's psychic abilities help create a portal that allows them to contact the ghost. Jessica Raine has been the star of the BBC series "Call the Midwife" and plays Verity Lambert, one of the creators of "Doctor Who", in "An Adventure in Space and Time".
