Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sweets were synonymous with Tom Baker's Doctor?

Answer: Jelly Babies

Although Tom Baker's Doctor was the most famous for eating these sweets, he was not the first Doctor to be seen devouring them.

That privilege goes to the Second Doctor, where in "The Dominators" he was seen eating some from a bag whilst waiting in a time capsule. He also offered the Brigadier one when in the TARDIS during "The Three Doctors", and later on during "The Five Doctors" he was seen producing a bag of them when he was cornered by a Yeti.

Jelly Babies were seen, either being eaten or just in a bag, in thirteen different episodes during Tom Baker's era.

Colin Baker mentioned them once in "The Two Doctors" and the Seventh Doctor was seen snacking on one shortly before his regeneration in the TV movie. A bag of them was in his possession, which was then picked up by the eighth Doctor. The Eleventh Doctor's ganger asked "Would you like a Jelly Baby?" in the voice of the fourth Doctor.

Boy, that's some sweet tooth he's got!

2. The Fourth Doctor wore numerous scarves throughout his time, but what detail made them stand out from ordinary scarves?

Answer: They were exceptionally long

The original scarf came about after the costume designer (James Acheson) gave a woman named Begonia Pope a load of wool asking that she knit a scarf for them. Unsure of how long to knit it, she consequently decided to use up all of the wool. This resulted in an enormously long scarf, which was well received by the production team.

This scarf, after a minor shortening, was used in the opening episode "Robot" and in the "The Sontaran Experiment", which was filmed immediately afterwards. Other scarves were used during Tom Baker's time, including the original (but in amended form) each having different patterns and colours - the longest one reaching 24 feet in length.

There was also a 'stunt scarf' in which a shorter scarf was used for the action sequences.

Season 18 saw a new scarf made with a thicker chenille in burgundy which was used for the rest of the season which was Tom Bakers last.

3. In the 2006 episode "School Reunion", Mickey Smith described himself as the Doctor's 'Man in Havana' before realising he was actually the tin dog. The 'tin dog' first travelled with the fourth doctor. What was its name?

Answer: K-9

The version of K-9 to be with Sarah Jane Smith when they met The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) was actually K-9 Mark III. After he sacrificed himself to destroy the Krillitane and K9 mark IV was left with Sarah Jane at the end of the episode.

The original K-9 was built in the 51st Century by Professor Marius, as he had been forced to leave his real dog on Earth.

Question by Daddy19
4. What was the name of the Time Lady who was sent by the White Guardian to assist the Doctor in finding the Key to Time, who became his Companion for a time?

Answer: Romana

The first Time Lady to travel with the Doctor was, appropriately enough, the Doctor's granddaughter Susan Foreman - also the Doctor's first ever (seen on TV) Companion. Romana was the only other Time Lady to travel with the Doctor during the classic series.

Romana was actually played by two actresses in the time that the character traveled with the Doctor, as the original actress decided not to sign on for a second season. To make things work with the storyline, Romana (as Time Lords and Ladies can) regenerated. Romana's full name was Romanadvoratrelundar.

The first actress to play the role was Mary Tamm, and the second was Lalla Ward.

5. When travelling in Exo-Space in the serial "Full Circle", the Doctor met and took on a new Companion. Who was that?

Answer: Adric

Adric was played by Matthew Waterhouse and was Companion to both the Fourth and Fifth Doctors (1980 to 1982). He was from the planet Alzarius in the parallel universe called Exo-Space, or E-Space. Running from the danger of Mistfall, Adric accidentally found the TARDIS, and he hid inside for safety. He ended up stowing away when the Doctor, Romana and K-9 Mark II left.

6. In which serial did the Doctor claim the Presidency of Gallifrey?

Answer: The Invasion of Time

"The Invasion of Time" was the last serial of Tom Baker's fourth season as the Doctor (15th season overall). Six episodes long, the story revolved around a plot by first the Vardans and then the Sontarans to invade Gallifrey. Only by the use of the dangerous (and banned) Demat gun, which erases its targets from time and memory, did the Doctor manage to voice he threat. With his own memory of recent events also altered, the Doctor left Gallifrey to continue on his journeys, leaving Companions Leela and K-9 behind.

Question by reedy
7. In Tom Baker's first series as the Fourth Doctor, the Time Lords sent him to try and prevent the creation of the Daleks. To which planet was he sent?

Answer: Skaro

On Skaro, the Kaleds were at war with the Thals and their greatest scientist, Davros, unveiled his 'Mark III travel machine'. This travel machine would later be renamed by Davros as a Dalek (an anagram of Kaled).

Question by Daddy19
8. Against whom was the Doctor fighting when he fell to his 'death' (and regeneration) in his last serial "Logopolis"?

Answer: The Master

Initially, the Doctor traveled to Logopolis to see whether he could repair the chameleon circuit (it was broken, keeping the TARDIS looking like a blue police box), but in attempting to do so, inadvertently had the TARDIS materialize overtop the Master's TARDIS.

The Doctor and the Master ended up working together to prevent a catastrophe that would have ended all life in the universe, but at the last minute, the Master threatened to let the catastrophe still occur... unless everyone bowed down to him and acknowledged his rule. The Doctor stopped him, but fell from the radio dish tower, sustaining enough damage to force his regeneration.

9. "Doctor Who" was cancelled by the BBC in 1989. When this happened, seven actors had played the role of The Doctor on television. But, was Tom Baker the actor who had appeared in the most number of episodes?

Answer: Yes

It can be argued that Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor for the longest period of time chronologically given his first appearance was in 1987 and his final appearance was in 1996. Episode-wise, however, he only appeared in 42 episodes.

Tom Baker's tenure as the Time Lord lasted from 1974-1981. In that time, he appeared in 171 episodes (as well as "The Five Doctors", during Peter Davison's tenure).

The show was revived in 2005 and, up through the end of 2012, "Doctor Who" has only had a maximum of 13 episodes per series (as well as a Christmas special). An actor would therefore need to play the role for over 12 years before surpassing Tom Baker's total.

Question by Daddy19
10. Tom Baker made his final appearance as the Doctor in 1993's two-part charity special "Dimensions in Time" that included the Third through Seventh Doctors. With what other BBC television series did the show crossover?

Answer: EastEnders

"Dimensions in Time" was produced in the 30th anniversary year of "Doctor Who", and put the Doctors back on the screen for the first time since the show was cancelled in 1989. In addition to the five Doctors named in the question, the show also included a number of cast members from "EastEnders".

The premise of the two-part show was that the Rani, a renegade Time Lady, was trying to trap all the incarnations of the Doctor (oddly) in London's East End - in the "EastEnders'" Albert Square. After learning that the first and second Doctors have already been captured, Tom Baker's Doctor broadcasted a warning to all of his other incarnations:

"Mayday! Mayday! This is an urgent message for all the Doctors. It's vitally important that you listen carefully to me for once. Our whole existence is being threatened by a renegade Time Lord known only as the Rani! She hates me. She even hates children! Two of my earlier selves have already been snared in her vicious trap. The grumpy one and the flautist, do you remember? She wants to put us out of action, lock us away in a dreary backwater of London's East End, trapped in a time-loop in perpetuity. Her evil is all around us! I can hear the heart beat of a killer. She's out there somewhere. We must be on our guard and we must stop her before she destroys all of my other selves! Oh ... Good luck, my dears!" (quoted from Wikipedia page on "Dimensions in Time")
