The episode "Cousin Virgil" aired April 30, 1962. Virgil was clumsy, had no self-confidence and seemed to be a one-man wrecking crew. He dumped a pot roast in Andy's lap at Sunday dinner, crashed the squad car into Andy's garage, broke a pane of glass while sweeping up in the courthouse and finally polished the teeth right off the cell door key causing the door to not open.
In the "Star Trek" episode he played one of a group of kids who were over 300 years old yet still pre-pubescent and aging very slowly due to an experiment-gone-wrong years earlier.

2. Clint Howard made several appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show" as Leon, the adorable little peanut butter and jelly toting cowboy. On "Star Trek" he was the commander of an alien vessel in "The Corbomite Maneuver". What was the name of his character?

Clint Howard was the younger brother of Ronny Howard and was a regular on the 1960's TV series "Gentle Ben". He has had a long TV career appearing on everything from "The Patty Duke Show" to "Seinfeld". He has also appeared on the big screen in movies such as "Splash", "Night Shift", "Tango and Cash", "Apollo 13", "Twilight" and scores of others.

3. A female jewel thief named Jan McNair is captured and brought to Mayberry to be held in their jail until she can be transferred to the state prison. Both Andy and Barney are captivated by her beauty and charm. Barney is so taken in by her that he almost allows her to escape. This same attractive young lady appeared in the "Star Trek" pilot called "The Cage" playing the role of Vina, opposite Captain Christopher Pike. The last name of this actress is the same as one of the three middle names given for Barney Fife during the series.

Answer: Susan Oliver

Susan Oliver was seemingly on every major TV show in the 60's and 70's. Some of those included "Bonanza", "Gunsmoke", "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.", "The Invaders", "Route 66", "Mannix", "The Twilight Zone", "Magnum, P.I." and many others. She even directed one episode of "M*A*S*H"!
She was also an aviator and became only the fourth woman to fly a single-engine aircraft solo across the Atlantic. Before she made that flight however she had a terrifying experience on February 3, 1959 (the same day that Buddy Holly died) while a passenger on a 707 from Paris to New York. The plane dropped from 35,000 feet to 6,000 feet in a short period of time and Oliver would not fly for well over a year even turning down TV roles if she could not drive to the location. After undergoing hypnosis, she decided to take up flying to overcome her fear and even wrote a book about her solo flight experience -- "Odyssey: A Daring Transatlantic Journey".
FYI - The 3 middle names given for Barney were Oliver, Milton and Tibbs. The P was never disclosed.

4. Stanley Adams appeared in one of my favorite "Star Trek" episodes as the Tribble vendor, Cyrano Jones. On "The Andy Griffith Show" he played Ralph, the out-of-town brother of which Mayberry citizen?

Stanley Adams appeared on both TV and the big screen. He was in nearly 60 movies that included "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "North by Northwest", "Lilies of the Field" and "The Gene Krupa Story". His television appearances included "Batman", "McHale's Navy", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Odd Couple", "Lost in Space" and "Gunsmoke".

He appeared on Andy Griffith in the episode entitled "Deputy Otis" and when he comes to Mayberry for a visit it is discovered he is the town drunk back in his hometown.

5. In the "Andy Griffith" episode "Guest in the House" (season 5, #63), Jan Shutan guest stars as Gloria, a friend of the family who has come to Mayberry for a short visit to help her cope with the recent breakup of her fiance. Shutan also appeared on "Star Trek" in the third season episode called "The Lights of Zetar". Her character was a Lieutenant that was being transported to Memory Alpha, the central library for The United Federation of Planets. When the Enterprise arrives they find all the inhabitants have been killed by a strange energy storm and all the library's memory banks erased. What was the name of the lieutenant that Shutan portrayed?

Jan Shutan played Gloria and Lt. Mira Romaine. Her visit to Mayberry predictably causes trouble between Andy and Helen Crump but in the end Gloria reconciles with her fiance and returns home. On "Star Trek" it is Mr. Scott who is smitten with Lt. Romaine.

It is found that she is able to sense the energy storm as it approaches and it's discovered that she and the Zetar Lights have the same exact brain wave pattern.

6. This gentleman played either a law enforcement officer or a detective in most of his TV roles and made four different appearances on "The Andy Griffith Show". His first appearance was as a state police sergeant in the episode "Manhunt", the second episode of season one. On "Star Trek" he played Chief Engineer Vanderberg in the episode "Devil in the Dark" (the one about the Horta). Which actor played these roles?

Ken Lynch had a prolific TV and movie career. Between 1950 and 1974 he appeared in over 30 movies. In most of his TV stints he was cast as a policeman and was seen on shows like "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Fugitive", "The Twilight Zone", "All in the Family", "Adam-12" and "The Wild, Wild West".

His most well known TV parts were as 'The Lieutenant' on "The Plainclothesman" which ran from 1949 - 1954 and also on "McCloud" as Sergeant Grover.

7. This actress guest stars in the second season episode of "Star Trek" called "Metamorphosis" portraying Assistant Federation Commissioner Nancy Hedford. She had been diagnosed with a terminal condition called Sakuro's disease and the Enterprise is transporting her to seek medical treatment. Long before she boarded the starship however, she showed up in Mayberry for 12 episodes and became the first of Andy Taylor's love interests. Who was this actress?

Answer: Elinor Donahue

Elinor Donahue played the lady pharmacist Ellie Walker who had come to Mayberry to help her uncle Fred run his drugstore. She was only in town for the first season and why she left the series is never explained. On "Star Trek" she was in the episode that featured the pioneer of the time warp, Zefram Cochrane and an alien energy form known as 'the Companion'.

8. This actor, Jon Lormer, appeared as several different Mayberry residents. In the episode "Bailey's Bad Boy" he played farmer Fletch Dilbeck; in "The Cow Thief" he was Tate Fletcher and in "Opie's Fortune" he portrays Parnell Rigsby. On the "Star Trek" series he also played multiple characters. First he played Dr. Haskins in the pilot episode and "Menagerie" then in "Return of The Archons" he was Tamar. We are not told his name in his final appearance but he played an old man whose only line also happens to be the name of the episode. Captain Kirk becomes annoyed with Baris for placing a Priority One distress call to guard a shipment of quadrotriticale (a high-yield wheat) that is being shipped to Sherman's planet. As for Schallert, his acting career spanned over 60 years with both movie roles and hundreds of TV appearances.

He played Patty Duke's father on "The Patty Duke Show" and a teacher on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis". Some of his movies include "Mighty Joe Young", "Them!", "Pillow Talk" (with Doris Day and Rock Hudson), "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes", "Speedway" and "The Jerk".
