Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On day 24, who is the first person Ana sees when she wakes up?

Answer: Goodwin

On the 24th morning, Ana awakens to see Goodwin laying beside her and staring, as if observing her. They exchange a rather uneasy "good morning" before Cindy runs into the camp with an announcement-- Nathan was gone.
Upon finding the empty pit, Ana tells the group that the "Others" had found them and it was time to move once again.
2. On day 26, the survivors see the ocean again.

Answer: True

The tail survivors once again trekked through the jungle, moving deeper into the island. After two days, on day 26, the six remaining approach a rocky shore meeting the ocean. The scene is very short and yet very meaningful. Notice the way Ana gazes out at the waves, and then glances back at Goodwin beside her.
At this point, she had realized the truth about Goodwin (probably by thinking back to how Goodwin never could have been in the ocean after the crash).
The realization is confirmed on the next day, when Ana's attitude toward Goodwin had perceivably changed and she refuses to allow him to take the radio up the hills alone.
3. All but which happens on day 27?

Answer: Ana hears a "pig" in the jungle

On day 27, the survivors encounter a mysterious door concealed behind a cluster of vines in the jungle. Later, they bring the raft survivors here as well.
Inside the hatch, a radio is found matching the one which Boone encountered on the Nigerian plane. Bernard makes an attempt but realizes the signal needed to be picked up on higher ground (just like Sayid, Kate and the members of the fuselage group had hiked to higher ground with the transceiver-- and found a polar bear-- their second day).
Ana finds a control panel as well, and switches on lights. This confirms that somewhere on the island a power source is generating electricity, and in Desmond's compound also.
For some reason (the "Quarantine", maybe?) this station seemed to have been abandoned quite some time ago.
4. The tail section survivors discover a mysterious door in the jungle on which there is a faded "Dharma" logo, featuring an arrow in the center.

Answer: False

The survivors encounter the hatch door, leading to the compound (which may or may not be attached to the Dharma station Desmond inhabited with the doomsday button, located opposite the island). Ana perceived it as a bunker, while Goodwin called it a "storage facility". Mr. Eko was first to open the hidden door, at which point a bold "QUARANTINE" warning matching that on the metal hatch door was distinguishable-- but not addressed--in the faded light. It is inside the new hatch/compound that the survivors find a Dharma symbol featuring an arrow in the center.

The arrow points directly vertical, like the north on a compass, and may in fact be a separate station from the previously seen affiliated with the organization. (The swan in Desmond's compound, and the horizontal bar seen on the tail of the shark which attacked the rafters at sea-- each most likely represent one of the six stations.)
5. Which is the first item to come out of the trunk found within the bunker?

Answer: A glass eye

Inside the compound, Ana is the first to draw attention to an old trunk (one of the only objects in the area). The group proceeds to open it, and something immediately falls out and rolls away. Libby retrieves it, and Libby announces that it is a glass eye. (A very odd trinket to begin with, but this eye has been seen before-- recall Claire's nightmare in which she encountered Locke in the jungle with a backgammon board, with one light and eye and one dark...) Among then other objects are blankets and a worn, faded Holy Bible which Mr. Eko has quite strong reactions to, reinforcing his strong sense of religion. Bernard finds the radio and makes the first transmission attempt unsuccessfully.

In order to obtain a signal, Goodwin and Ana hiked up the hills while the rest of the group set up the new shelter.
6. When Goodwin decided to hike to higher ground, Ana insisted on joining him and questioned why the "Others" had taken the individuals they had. According to Goodwin, the "Others" had originally aimed to take which?

Answer: The four strongest, most athletic

After recognizing the truth about Goodwin, Ana refuses to allow him to take the radio alone. Instead, she boldly goes alone with him on the hike up the hills. Ana uses the time alone as an opportunity to question Goodwin and investigate the mysteries surrounding the "Others".
Goodwin discloses that the "Others" had come for four originally-- the strongest, most athletic, toughest individuals. This information implies that the "Others" merely intended to remove those who were perceived as threats in order to gain easier access to those they really wanted (the "good" list?) Mr. Eko was among those they had designated to be removed, but "plans changed" when two "Others" were killed instead.
Goodwin told Ana that the "Others" were not attacking them, suggesting that there is a deeper motive behind the abductions than mere sabotage.
As for the "list", the single major clue was that Nathan was "not good person", and so he was not on "the list". Apparently, all those on the list had been carefully observed, evaluated and met a certain criteria to categorize them as "good" by standards of the "Others" for an unknown purpose.
It is likely that the first three, extracted solely for access to the individuals they wanted, were killed while the children are most likely alive and integrated as a part of the "Others". The ghost-like appearances of Walt may contradict this, while the presence of the dangling teddy bear belonging to Zack suggest Goodwin was truthful when insisting that the children were fine (and better off?)
7. What type of fruit do Ana and Goodwin share while discussing the military knife?

Answer: Mango

A very large sector of the revelations relating to the experiences of the tail section survivors during the first 48 days relied heavily upon assumptions. When Jin discovered Goodwin's decomposing body, with a stake through it, in a previous episode he was told by Mr. Eko that "his name was Goodwin". Jin asked "Others?" and Mr. Eko nodded, so the audience assumed that Goodwin had been killed by the "Others" (when in fact it was Goodwin who WAS an "Other").
And it was Ana who did it. While taking a break, Ana reluctantly handed Goodwin the pocket knife to cut a mango. After a tense moment, she managed to retrieve it in order to explain that the military stamp dated the knife about twenty years old. (So it has been on the island awhile, and so have the owners.)
Ana finally interrogates Goodwin about finding Bernard in the jungle, and why he pretended to be one of the survivors. Notice the immediate change in Goodwin after the disclosure, and the way in which his eyes turn cold and his voice almost mechanized. He tells Ana that the children "are better off now", and they begin to have a struggle which ends in Goodwin's impalement. Goodwin is the fourth "Other" to die in this episode at the hands of the tail section survivors, following the two killed by Mr. Eko and the female killed by Ana during the second attack.
Ana returns to the shelter alone and assures the remaining three that they are now safe.
8. There is new hope for the survivors when communication is made on the radio. Did Bernard receive a transmission before he sent one?

Answer: Yes

The mystery of the voice which replied to Boone from the radio on the Nigerian beech craft, "We are the survivors of Oceanic 815" was long debated and finally unveiled. Bernard had been switching on the radio for several minutes each day in hopes of receiving a signal despite Ana's dubious remarks (much like Sawyer had done on the raft, against Michael's wishes). Suddenly, out of the static, a voice was heard sending a mayday. Bernard immediately responded by asking the transmission to be repeated and was confused by the response of the survivors of the Oceanic crash. Before the transmission ended on the other end, Ana turned off the radio and insisted that it was the "Others" trying to persuade them out.

Despite Ana's insistence otherwise, Bernard wondered if there could really be other survivors out there. Recall in "Walkabout" last season, Jack had asserted to Rose the same.

While preparing for the memorial of the deceased survivors, Jack asked if Rose would like to say good-bye to her husband and he was shocked when she insisted Bernard was not dead. Jack had said, "I'm sorry, but everyone who was in the rear of the plane's gone." To this, Rose replied, "They're probably thinking the same thing about us."
9. On which day does Bernard receive the radio transmission?

Answer: Day 41

The radio transmission is received on day 41, which gives reference to the timeline of the fuselage survivors as well. At this point, the present day was day 48. Since Boone had died on the day he sent the radio transmission (and it was subsequently received by Bernard) this deduces that Boone had only been dead for one week on the island by the time his sister was also killed.

After dashed hope of finding other survivors, Ana Lucía was alone at the stream and was approached by Mr. Eko. Upon seeing her visibly upset, Mr. Eko spoke for the first time since the incident of killing the "Others". Ana was incredulous to find that Mr. Eko had intentionally waited 40 days to speak. Mr. Eko replied, "You waited forty days to cry." The two connected as Ana finally allowed her grief to be released.
Day 40 was the day on which the "exodus" of the rafters began (and the night on which Walt was kidnapped), and the hatch was opened. The religious implication and significance of 40 probably relates to Mr. Eko as a vow of silence for his sin of killing two people.
10. Who is the first of the tail section survivors seen by Jin?

Answer: Mr. Eko

On day 45, the first encounter with the fuselage survivors begins to weave the two sides together. Cindy and Libby are tying a fishing net on the beach when Cindy notices something washing up in the turf-- a body. Jin is unconscious when he is discovered and taken into the jungle, and blindfolded when he regains his awareness. The first person he sees is Mr. Eko, and Jin is visibly startled. The tail group debates if he could be an "Other" and Ana refers to the broken handcuff which STILL remains on his wrist from one of the early days on the island. Jin makes his escape back to the beach and warns Michael and Sawyer of the "Others", who approach with their clubs raised.
The following days are reflected in a montage from the view of the tail survivors. Ana is seen demanding to be thrown into the pit to find out who the strangers really are. On day 46, the rafters are led to the bunker; on day 47, they traverse the jungle once again towing the unconscious Sawyer in the stretcher. Day 48 is named "today", and Ana calls out for the vanished Cindy.
In the rain, the whispers are heard. Only three tail survivors and Michael and Jin (towing Sawyer) remain to hear the shot heard around the television-viewing world-- the looks of horror were clear through the pouring rain of yet another sudden tropical storm. Ana stood holding the gun, frozen.
Now the separate stories had concluded, and the 48th day continued as one story. The disastrous encounter between the tail and fuselage survivors-- the first reunion since the doomed flight-- was the beginning of a new battle among their own...
