Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barney discovers an unflattering poem written about him on the wall of the bank. Even better, he manages to catch the graffiti-writing culprit red-handed with a piece of chalk still in his hand. The poem reads as follows: 'There once was a Deputy called Fife', 'Who carried a gun and a knife', 'But the gun was all dusty', 'The knife was all rusty', 'Cause he never caught a crook in his life'. Who was it that Barney claimed wrote the comical yet disrespectful poem?

Answer: Opie

This episode called "Andy, the Matchmaker" is from season one and features the very first time Barney tries to turn in his resignation. Even though Deputy Fife is convinced that Opie is his man, Andy explains that Opie hasn't yet learned to write thereby clearing him.

As it turned out some of the older school boys had written the humerous limerick on the wall then shoved the chalk into Opie's hand when they heard Barney approaching.
2. Ernest T. Bass comes to town in hopes of getting an education and winds up falling in love with his teacher. The trouble is that the teacher happens to be Helen Crump, who is keeping steady company with Sheriff Taylor. When Andy becomes frustrated that he can't make Ernest T. understand that Helen is his girl, Barney offers to take Ernest T. out behind the barn for five minutes. How does Andy respond to Barney's suggestion?

Answer: "He'd kill you."

"The Education of Ernest T. Bass" from season five finds Andy and Helen trying to help Ernest T. get an education to improve his chances of getting a woman. The experiment fails miserably as he disrupts Helen's class and ends up throwing rocks through her windows at home. Barney is sure he can take care of the Ernest T. situation but Andy repeats several times, "He'd kill you" and then finally even Helen tells that same exact thing to Barney!
3. Barney makes a fool of himself (yet again) by going to jail for five days after Gomer places him under a "citizen's arrest". Barney could have paid a five dollar fine and settled the whole matter but instead he lets his temper guide his thinking and goes to jail to prove a point. What offense did Barney commit that caused Citizen Pyle to issue an arrest?

Answer: Making an illegal U-turn

From season four, and of course titled "Citizen's Arrest", Barney sees Gomer make an illegal U-turn after leaving the post office. Barney immediately pulls him over and writes him a ticket. Barney then gets back in the squad car and does the exact same illegal U-turn and that's when Gomer, as a citizen of the town of Mayberry and of the United States of America, places him under arrest. Barney, boiling mad at being made a fool of, resigns yet again and spends five days in the lockup.
4. Andy and Barney start reminiscing about their high school days while browsing through an old Mayberry Union High yearbook. They decide to organize a 20-year class reunion and receive quite a few RSVPs. Barney is worried about seeing an old girlfriend because she is now married and he does not want to be the reason a marriage breaks up. As it turns out, he needn't have worried ... she doesn't even remember Barney and evens mistakes him for the bartender. What is the name of this alleged old flame of Barney?

Answer: Ramona Wiley

This episode from season three is appropriately titled "Class Reunion". Barney confides to Andy that the romance was all one-sided and that Ramona was wild about him even writing a note to him once... "Barney, my beloved. The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain that is in my heart." However, she doesn't even recognize him or remember that she used to call him 'Tweekie'. Oh, brother!
5. The neighboring community of Greendale offers Barney the job of Sheriff. Andy doesn't believe Barney has the experience and decides to let him be sheriff for a day to get the feel of the job. He decides his first official act as Sheriff is to try and locate Rafe Hollister's still. He proceeds to do this by interrogating Otis' subconcious while he sleeps. It doesn't quite work out as Old Barn had hoped because Otis is only pretending to be asleep and gives Barney directions to the still that cover most of the east coast. What address does he eventually lead Barney to?

Answer: Barney's house at 411 Elm Street

This episode from season two is called "Sheriff Barney" and the scene between he and Otis in the jail cell is one of the funniest in the entire series. Barney does end up bringing in the notorious moonshiner but it isn't for bootlegging. Instead Old Barn nabs him for jaywalking and doesn't even realize that the scofflaw is none other than Rafe Hollister.
6. One day while Andy is out of the office, two very official-looking men enter and ask for Sheriff Taylor. Barney explains that the sheriff is out and offers to help with anything he can. They say they will wait. Barney then explains he is the Deputy and he can handle anything that the Sheriff can. Again, they say they will wait. Barney then adds that Andy might not be right back. They still say they will wait. Finally Opie comes into the office looking for his paw and asked Barney who the two men were. How does Deputy Fife respond?

Answer: "Don't ask me.... I just run the waitin' room!"

This episode features Ron Howard's dad, Rance, as one of the two official-looking gents - who happen to be from the U.S. Treasury Dept. As it turns out, a seven million dollar gold shipment will be coming through Mayberry and it is top-secret! However, the secret leaks out thanks to good old tight-lipped Barney.

The episode from season 3 titled "A Black Day for Mayberry" is also a black day for Barney as he almosts reveals that the truck is just a decoy and almost blows the whole operation.
7. Barney always seems to be accidentally locking himself inside one of the jail cells. In this episode titled "One-punch Opie", Barney gets incarcerated twice - first by his own hand - right after delivering his "No more peanut-butter sandwiches in prison" speech. Who is it that locks Deputy Fife inside cell #1 the second time?

Answer: Leon

From season three, this episode has Barney telling Opie and his friends that if you break the law then you might end up in the slammer. No more care-free hours, no more doing what you want when you want... no more peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Ironically funny that at the end of this episode Leon slams the cell door locking Barney inside.

Then Leon walks up and offers Old Barn a bite of his peanut butter sandwich.
8. Barney not only has a high opinion of his singing ability but he also believes himself to be one of the finer actors in Mayberry. John Masters evidently disagrees. For John is not only the director of the Mayberry Choir but he is also in charge of the pageant celebrating Mayberry's 100th annivesary. Barney is cast as an Indian Chief but John Masters actually cringes while watching him play the part. In the end, Barney sees another man on stage with the Indian headdress and realizes his part has been revoked. What is the name of the Indian Chief that Barney started out portraying?

Answer: Nougatuk

This season five episode called "The Pageant" is mostly about who is going to play the part of Lady Mayberry. Clara Edwards played the part so well in the past but this year she is unable to, so Aunt Bee steps forward. However, we find she is no better at acting than Barney is.
9. Even though he was going steady with Thelma Lou, Barney would from time to time step out with Juanita (from the diner). One early morning while on the phone trying to set up a date with her for that evening, Barney does his best rooster impression in a soft seductive voice, "Cock-a-doodle-doo". Juanita must've enjoyed it because she asks him to do it again. Unbeknownst to Barney, Andy quietly enters the courthouse and hears the 'fowl' language before Barn realizes he is there. With a smirky smile on his face, what does Andy say to Barney?

Answer: "You wanna stand up, Barn? I want to see if there's an egg in the chair."

"The Great Filling Station Robbery" from season three is one of the funniest episodes with Don Knotts (IMHO). Another funny moment in this show is when Barney is certain he has captured a picture of the person responsible for the thefts at Wally's gas station and it turns out to be a picture of himself. This is also the first episode ever where Gomer says "Shazamm!"
10. In an episode from season four, "The Song Festers", Mayberry choir director John Masters replaces Barney as the soloist for an upcoming concert. He confides to Andy that Barney is simply terrible and when Masters discovers that Gomer has a dynamic voice, replaces Barney as the soloist. The evening of the concert, who actually ends up performing the solo?

Answer: Gomer, Barney and Andy

Gomer is supposed to do the solo but he waits (and hopes) for Barney to step out and perform and when neither of them step forward, Andy grabs them both by the arm and they all three end up stepping forward to sing the solo part. Taylor, Pyle and Fife (as Elenora Poultice called them) perform the world's first three-man solo! This is a bit of a sad episode in that Barney really believes he has a terrific voice and it is a blow to his ego being replaced as soloist.

The only explanation is that Barney must have a tin ear.

In another episode, he could not hear what a great singing voice Rafe Hollister had and in this episode he could not hear what a powerful voice Gomer Pyle had. When John Masters asks Barney's opinion of Gomer's singing, Barney tells him if he wanted to put Gomer in the choir just let him sing behind some girls!
