Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Pilot for "The X-Files" Mulder and Scully traveled to Oregon to investigate what phenomenon?

Answer: Alien abductions

In their very first case, Mulder and Scully travel to the fictional town of Bellefleur, in Raymon County, Oregon. The name is based on Bellflower, California, the hometown of "X Files" creator Chris Carter. They revisit the town in "Requiem," the last episode of season seven.

They investigate the disappearance of local teenagers, who appear to have encountered extra-terrestrials. The central figure in the case is Billy Miles, the son of the local sheriff.

Over the course of seven years, the duo would investigate vampires and cattle mutilations, but not Bigfoot. Guess even Mulder has his limits.
2. What Midwestern state do Mulder and Scully visit to investigate the disappearance of a young woman named Ruby Morris?

Answer: Iowa

The Morris family lived in Sioux City, Iowa (an actual place). The abduction took place at a campsite located on Lake Okobogee (as spelled in the episode). There is a real Lake Okoboji in Iowa; it is about 120 miles northeast of Sioux City. The events take place in the season 1 episode "Conduit" (1993).

Mulder and Scully find Ruby, who appears to have been in a gravity-free environment. Ruby's mother refuses to allow Mulder to speak to her daughter, blocking Mulder's quest to discover the truth about extra-terrestrials.

Mulder and Scully did not visit Minnesota. In "The Rain King" (1999), Mulder and Scully visit the fictional town of Kroner, Kansas where they meet a man who claims to be able to manipulate the weather. In "Post Modern Prometheus" (1999), Mulder and Sculder traveled to Indiana to investigate a young man who was a mutant.
3. In "Our Town", Mulder and Scully visit Dudley, Arkansas to visit what type of company where strange things are going on?

Answer: chicken processing plant

The agents travel to Dudley to investigate a large number of disappearances in the area. The number finally ends up being 87. The agents uncover evidence that the people of Dudley have been engaged in cannibalism for quite some time. Mulder manages to rescue Scully before she is chopped up and eaten by the townspeople.

Due to the cannibalism, 27 people from Dudley die from Cruetzfeld-Jakob disease. The plant is closed by down the USDA. Chaco Chicken appears to be a parody of Tyson Foods, the largest chicken processing plant in the United States, which is located in Springdale. While Dudley is supposedly fictional (one hopes), there is a real Dudley Lake township in Jefferson County, Arkansas.
4. In the episode "Chinga", Scully encounters a demon possessed doll during her vacation in Maine. How does she destroy the doll?

Answer: nuked it in a microwave

Scully, trying to get away from things, visits scenic Amma Beach, Maine. She meets a young girl named Polly, who has a doll named Chinga. The doll is possessed by an evil spirit that causes people to act violently towards themselves and others.

Scully manages to save the little girl by placing the doll in the microwave. The doll winds up getting tossed in the ocean, where it is found by a fisherman. The doll, though badly melted, still has the evil spirit inside.
5. What part of Ohio did Mulder and Scully travel to in order to investigate a serial killer who sucked the fat out of his victims?

Answer: Cleveland

In the episode "2Shy" (1995), the agents visit Cleveland in search of a killer who is hunting his victims through an on-line dating site. He schedules dates with women, usually heavy-set women, then kills them and sucks off their fat. Mulder refers to him as a "fat vampire." The ordinarily skeptical Scully tends to believe the theory based on very bizarre autopsy results.

Timothy Carhart plays Virgil Incanto, a man responsible for 47 murders in five states. Mulder and Scully manage to track down the killer by using his internet contacts.

Cleveland was actually ranked fairly low in the survey of "Fattest Cities in America". Most of the top ones are in Southern states. It is noted that Incanto did kill women in Mississippi, a state with a large number of fat people.
6. In "End Game" (1995), Mulder chased an alien bounty hunter to Alaska where they fought on a submarine. What body of water were they in?

Answer: Beaufort Sea

Mulder flew up to Deadhorse, Alaska (a real place), and was able to discover the submarine in the Beaufort Sea. He fought the alien, who abandoned him on the ice in northern Alaska (a pretty cold place to be). Amazingly, the cold saved Mulder's life by stopping the spread of an extra-terrestrial retro-virus which had infected him.

Brian Thompson appeared as the alien bounty hunter in nine episodes of "X-Files". Thompson was also "The Judge" on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1998). His first film role was as a punk in "The Terminator" (1984).

The submarine was the USS Allegiance, which is fictional. The Beaufort Sea is quite real, and is located north of eastern Alaska and western Yukon Territory.

Photo Clue: Francis Beaufort, British geographer who the Beaufort Sea is named after
7. Naturally, Mulder and Scully visited Area 51 in Nevada, where Mulder switches bodies with a "Man in Black." Who played MIB Morris Fletcher?

Answer: Michael McKean

Veteran actor Michael McKean, got his big break as Lenny Kosnowski on "Laverne and Shirley" (1976-83). Since then he has made dozens of films and numerous television appearances, including several episodes of "The X-Files." His first appearance was in "Dreamland 1 and 2" (1998), showing up later in "Three of a Kind" (1999) and "Jump the Shark" (2002).

In "Dreamland 1 and 2", Mulder swaps bodies with a Man in Black due to extra-terrestrial intervention. They have some very strange encounters before being swapped back. Mulder's best line, at seeing the closet filled with black suits: "Ladies and Gentleman, Johnny Cash."

What the four actors listed share in common is that all were born in 1947.

8. In "Brand X", Mulder and Scully travel to North Carolina to investigate strange happenings around what agricultural product?

Answer: tobacco

The villain in "Brand X" (2000) is big tobacco, specifically Morley, the favorite brand of the Cigarette Smoking Man. They invent a super tobacco which is infected with super beetles. The beetles kill people who smoke the cigarettes. Mulder is exposed to the beetles; Scully saves his life by using nicotine against them.

Tobacco is North Carolina's biggest plant-based agricultural product, earning $688 million in sales in 2017.
9. In the episode "Space" (1993), where does Mulder meet astronaut Marcus Aurelius Belt, one of his childhood heroes?

Answer: Houston, Texas

Mulder and Scully are invited to investigate odd happenings around the space shuttle by a communications commander at NASA. They travel to Houston, where Mulder meets Lt. Col. Belt, and is somewhat awestruck; this is unusual for the usually quite cynical Mulder. During his travels in space, Belt had been taken over by an extra-terrestrial force, which has been using him to subvert the space program at NASA.

Belt was played by veteran character actor Ed Lauter. "Space" (1993) has been voted the worst episode of the first season by fans of the show.
10. What New England state did Fox Mulder visit when his mother got sick in the season three episode "Talitha Cumi"?

Answer: Rhode Island

Her summer home was in Quonochontaug, Rhode Island. Mrs Mulder had a confrontation with Cigarette Smoking Man, who apparently had been good friends with Mulder's parents when the two men were young intelligence officers.

Mulder goes to the hospital in Rhode Island when his mother collapses. Mulder visits a Massachusetts town overrun with cockroaches in "War of the Coprophages" (1996). Mulder went to Bethany, Vermont to investigate a missing little girl in "Chimera" (2000). Mulder and Scully did not visit Connecticut during the original run of "The X-Files".
