Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of season 1, a man is killed by the French in Italy. He is related to King Henry. How?

Answer: uncle

This is not historically accurate. His father, Henry VII, was an only child. Two of Henry VIII's uncles on his mother's side were the famous "princes in the Tower", whose fates remain a mystery to this day.
2. Henry's sister Margaret is sent to marry the king of which country?

Answer: Portugal

In real life, Henry VIII had two sisters, Mary and Margaret. In the show, however, only one is shown. Historically, it was actually Mary who was sent off to marry an aging king. But in her case it was the King of France, Louis XII.
3. How do Henry and Charles Brandon reconcile after he secretly marries Henry's sister?

Answer: Charles and Henry arm wrestle

In order to get Charles on their side in their plot to bring down Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Boleyn and the Duke of Norfolk promise to get him back on Henry's good side. They get Henry to agree to see Charles and he tells him he can come back to court if he beats him in arm wrestling. Charles wins and before Henry leaves he tells him "Welcome back".
4. What color is the gown Anne Boleyn wears when she is created Marquess Of Pembroke?

Answer: Red

This occurs in season 2, episode 2. I love that dress!
5. Who tells Mary that King Henry's marriage to her mother was declared invalid and Mary is no longer a princess?

Answer: Thomas Boleyn

Ouch! I wonder if having him deliver the news was meant as an added insult, considering that he is the father of her new stepmother, Anne Boleyn.
6. In season 2, why do Anne and her sister Mary part ways?

Answer: Anne banishes her from court

Mary actually got off easy, considering what happened to Anne and George later that season. She remarried someone of a lower rank without asking for Anne's consent. Her father cuts off her allowance and when Mary appeals to Anne for sympathy, Anne banishes her instead.
7. Cardinal Fisher is executed right after Thomas More.

Answer: False

Fisher was executed first.

The Pope decided to stick it to Henry by promoting Fisher to Cardinal upon hearing of the latter's imprisonment.

Thomas More's execution scene was very moving as was the love his family had for him.
8. What does Anne hand to the executioner before she prepares to kneel on the scaffold?

Answer: A purse of money

Traditionally, the executioner asks the condemned person for forgiveness. We also saw this when Thomas More was executed earlier in season 2. The condemned sometimes gave the executioner a purse of money as well.
9. How does Jane Seymour help Elizabeth (Henry's younger daughter) in the beginning of season 3?

Answer: She gives Elizabeth's governess a necklace to use in order to buy clothes

Earlier, we saw Thomas Cromwell telling Henry that Lady Bryan, Elizabeth's governess, wrote asking for money to buy Elizabeth new clothes. Elizabeth had outgrown her old ones, as kids her age will do. Henry stated that he didn't even think she was his biological daughter because of Anne's so called adultery.

Jane Seymour wants to make things a little easier for Elizabeth and Mary because as she puts it "women are much put upon in this world".
10. Which is NOT one of the titles/offices that Henry bestows on Thomas Cromwell after Anne's execution and Henry's remarriage?

Answer: Viscount Beauchamp of Hache

Viscount Beauchamp was the title given to Edward Seymour, Jane's brother, after Jane became Queen.

Lord Privy Seal was a major office to fill. Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, did NOT look pleased at all during the ceremony.
11. Charles Brandon enthusiastically crushes the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Answer: False

At first, he thinks he can use his position to bring down Cromwell because the rebels blamed Cromwell for the suppression of the monasteries. He hangs 74 of the rebels and seems very troubled by his actions as he watches the wives and children of the hanged men crying at their feet. Cromwell implies that he needs to punish more of them.

He also tells him that the King feels Brandon is being too lenient and suspects him of sympathizing with the rebels.
12. What is Katherine Howard doing when the guards come to tell her she is confined to her rooms?

Answer: Dancing with her ladies

Poor Katherine must have never seen this coming. She was having a grand old time dancing in her rooms, unaware that her past was about to catch up with her.
13. Katherine Howard's friend Joan Bulmer emerged unscathed from Katherine's downfall.

Answer: True

Katherine's former lover Francis Dereham was horribly tortured. He was then hung, drawn and quartered. Thomas Culpepper was beheaded, as was Lady Rochford. Katherine was the last to be executed.

Even though Joan knew about the affairs before Katherine's marriage to Henry, she escaped punishment, probably because she told everything she knew. Joan witnesses Katherine and Lady Rochford's executions.
14. How many times was Katherine Parr married BEFORE she married Henry?

Answer: 2

We learn this when she speaks with Henry for the first time. Her second husband is very sick and not expected to live long. She is in love with Thomas Seymour when Henry first notices her.
15. Which wife was not openly expected to bear a son?

Answer: Katherine Parr

Okay this might have seemed like a tricky question. Henry's marriage to Anne of Cleves was brief, but there was the expectation of sons.

Cromwell urged Henry to remarry after Jane Seymour died in order to produce more sons in case something happened to Edward.

Henry has a conversation with Katherine Howard where he expressed the hope that she will get pregnant and he seemed none too pleased when she mistakenly thought she was.

By the time Katherine Parr became queen Henry seemed to have abandoned his quest for more sons. In the show we never even see them in bed together. In history she is known as the wife he took more for companionship in his old age.

As an interesting side note, Katherine Parr was portrayed as being under pressure to get pregnant in the historical fiction novel "The Sixth Wife" by Jean Plaidy. In this novel, Henry VIII pathetically clung to his lost youth and refused to believe he was aging and possibly impotent.
