He works at Caltech's Applied Physics department. Caltech is a nickname for the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. His work often involves building equipment for NASA missions and the ISS. He doesn't have a Ph.D., and Sheldon teases him a lot for it, but he does have a Master's degree in engineering from MIT, and justifies himself by pointing that out. Being an engineer, he once made a killer robot for the guys in a competition.

He is only Jewish character in the series, but is only kosher during the Jewish holidays. Howard is not very serious about his faith, and when the price of pork from a restaurant went up, he remarked, "It's getting harder and harder to be a bad Jew." When Raj and Howard went to a goth nightclub to meet women, he did not get real tattoos, he wore fake-tattoo sleeves on his arms, so did Raj.

He almost got tattoos though for the chance of having sex.

Howard claims to be fluent in English, French, Mandarin, Russian, Arabic, Persian, and Klingon. Klingon is a language from the 'Star Trek' series, and all of the guys can speak it fluently. He has tried to impress Penny with his foreign-language knowledge by telling her, "How beautiful you are in flawless Russian." He once tried to teach Sheldon Mandarin Chinese during "The Tangerine Factor" but Sheldon never became good at it. Most of the languages he knows were revealed in the "Pilot" episode.

Howard hits on women constantly, and is unconcerned with the woman's age or attractiveness. During "The Killer Robot Instability" Howard and Penny got in an argument and Penny called him, "pathetic and creepy." Howard was traumatized, and stayed home in bed and didn't go to work.

He could not help Leonard, Raj, and Sheldon fix their robot after it was destroyed in a fight. Due to this, Leonard went to Penny and asked her to apologize to Howard, she agreed only when Leonard reminded her that she "owed [him] one" due to the events of the pilot. Penny went to Howard's and apologized, and Howard lapsed into his experiences with women and told Penny that he tried so hard with them because he thought he had to try hard to make up for his looks.

"The Hofstadter Isotope" was the episode where he revealed his, he remarked about it, "I'm a horny engineer, I never joke about math or sex." He did this to calculate the chances of him having sex. Howard, Leonard, and Raj went to a bar during the episode to pick up on women, which only worked for Raj, which greatly confused Howard. During the night, he had the longest conversation with a female when his mom called.

He said his second cousin's name was Jeanie and that they never meant for it to happen. During the eighth episode of the season, which was called "The Adhesive Duck Deficiency" Leonard, Howard, and Raj went camping to watch the Leonid meteor shower. But they started to go insane after eating cookies from some campers nearby, which was when Howard said this. They missed the meteor shower.

Raj is Howard's best friend, and Beverly Hofstadter, Leonard's mother, has said they have homosexual feelings for each other. Howard and Raj have denied this. Howard and Raj have the best "bromance" in the series, and do lots of things with each other. Once, when Raj became upset at Howard after losing his kite in a kite-fighting contest to Sheldon, Howard made it up to Raj by spending the Saturday with him at the La Brea Tar Pits.

However, he abandoned Raj to chase a female jogger.

We did not see Bernadette again until the 9th episode, "The Vengeance Formulation". Bernadette became angry at Howard due to him not calling her. Howard proposed to her due to his thinking that she was, "A girl, that likes me, and is, you know, real." He got rejected, and won back her affection by singing a song to her on the piano at The Cheesecake Factory. Bernadette and Howard, during the next episode, "The Gorilla Experiment", got in another argument because of Bernadette's interest in physics. That caused her to hang out with Leonard and watch his experiment. Howard rudely did not like this, which caused Bernadette to become angry at him. Howard apologized, and they made up.

Howard lives with his mother in Pasadena, and doesn't get along with her very well. During "The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition" he was going to move out of his mom's house into the recently vacant apartment above Leonard and Sheldon's, and compared himself to a bird leaving the nest, but he didn't.

The guys were going to help him, but before they could knock they heard Howard yelling that he would come over and have dinner with his mom every night, but Mrs. Wolowitz replied, "The hell you will!" During "The Pirate Solution" he tried to stay with Leonard and Penny because he didn't want to go home to his mom. According to Simon Helberg, who plays Howard, he is a momma's boy, he's not ready to move out.

This has been hinted at various times in the series, such as when, in "The Hofstadter Isotope" Leonard suggested going over to talk to two women while they were in a bar, but they were eating peanuts, and Howard said those peanuts could put him in a bad state for a week. During "The Vegas Renormalization" Sheldon said to Penny that his dinner contained, "A generous helping of peanuts that would reduce Wolowitz to a wheezing, 97-pound blister." During the same episode Howard wrote on Twitter that he was so depressed he might open a $20 can of peanuts and end it all.
