Bartlet had defeated Roush in his first congressional campaign but still harboured a lot of resentment towards him. He wanted to go up to New Hampshire until CJ persuaded him that he could not publicly take sides in a local school board election.

When Jed made light of this visit, Abbey then proceeded to give him a lecture about Nelly Bly who had pioneered investigative journalism by having herself committed to a mental institution for ten days so that she could write about it. She also pointed out that Nelly Bly had travelled round the world in 72 days, beating Jules Verne's record of 80 days. Jed scathingly replied that if she went 20,000 leagues under the sea, he would name a school after her.

Leo's sister Josephine was a nominee for a post in the Education Department and was opposed to school prayer. Leo discovered that the photographer Odabee Jones was grateful to Josephine for giving him a start to his career in photojournalism when she had given him a head's up about a photo opportunity. This involved an incident where she had called in the police to stop an organized prayer event before a ballgame. As a result Josephine withdrew her nomination.

Answer: Karen Cahill

Leo had made a joke to Karen Cahill about her shoes and sent Sam to apologise on his behalf. In doing so, Sam also confused Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Donna was sent to an event to meet with Karen and correct Sam's error, and ended up leaving her underwear behind.

When the President told Leo that he'd been asked to call Karen Cahill on Donna's behalf, Leo asked him not to wade hip deep into the story.

Abbey had read an article about Jane Robinson whose husband had thrown her out, set fire to the bed and destroyed all the childrens' Christmas presents. She sent her a check and Charlie was asked to find out why the check had not been cashed. He discovered that the woman had the cheque framed instead because it was from the First Lady.

He then asked Abbey for permission to draw £500 in cash and take it to the woman.

Charlie said that the President's brother had faxed a message to say the site that had been the first choice for the Bartlet Presidential Library violated the Historic Barn and Bridges Preservation Act. The President's reaction was "What plaid flannel-wearing, cheese-eating, yahoo of a milkman governor signed that idiot bill into state law?" He then paused and said, "It was me, wasn't it?"

Answer: Daniel Gault

Daniel Gault had been Special Economic Assistant to FDR and Special Liaison to State for Eastern European Affairs. He was accused of being a spy but as this could not be proved he was jailed for perjury and died in prison six months later. Sam discovered that the man had indeed been a spy but, out of kindness to Stephanie and her dying father, told her that he had not been able to find out anything but that the case would be kept open.

Answer: Teachers

They were all teachers at the school where Jed's father was the headmaster. In flashbacks, Mrs Landingham pointed out to the teenage Jed the inequality of their salaries and asked him to bring up the subject with his father. However, when Jed went to see his father, Bartlet Senior was angry with him about a magazine article he had written so Jed left without bringing the subject up.
